Nina Simone deserves a better portrayal!! This is insulting. Viola Davis, Lupita N'yongo, Uzo Aduba would have been better choices. Does Zoe Saldana realize she is in blackface?? Robert Downey, Jr. in "Tropic Thunder" had better makeup than this!!!

Melanny Olaso The objections have more to do with the fact that the people who made this movie had to use extensive makeup and prosthetics so Zoe Saldana would look like Nina Simone. Yes, her being a dark skinned black woman is absolutely relevant to this story. Nina Simone was one of the US's greatest singer/songwriters, but because she wasn't light-skinned and dainty, she was difficult to market to the white masses. So knowing this about Nina Simone, it's pretty damn problematic to select an actress who hasn't experienced this particular struggle firsthand. However, it's also problematic to claim that Afro-Latinos aren't really black, as many people are claiming. The women in this video did NOT make that claim, for the record, but many people have said this, including a lot of commenters on this video.
@gwendolynbien-aime1536
@gwendolynbien-aime1536 8 лет назад
+Melanny Olaso My objection has nothing to do with the race of Zoe Saldana. It doesn't matter if she is "Afro-latina" or "Afro-American". The problem is the horrifying usage of dark makeup and prosthetics used in her portrayal of a naturally dark-skinned woman (which by definition is blackface). Ladydontekno explains the situation perfectly.

Dave Tyler omg, Hamilton was just using a diverse a cast to diversify Broadway cause their aren’t a lot of POC on Broadway and I live in Nyc so I know how that type of casting works. They all rather have someone lighter. But when your making a movie about a dark skin African American singer who’s main attribute is dark skin why take a lighter actor and put her in black face. It’s that and also the fact Hollywood isn’t that diverse either so while Hamilton is helping diversify Broadway this movie isn’t.

@KealSpeaks
@KealSpeaks 8 лет назад
+Miranda Myers Hey! Thanks for that! One thing I would say though is that 90% of the time, PoC aren't bashing white people, we're simply pointing out the differences in our walks of life as a direct result in the difference in our color; call it the stain left by slavery on society. We can all work together to change that if we stop getting in our feelings so easily. Also, PoC can't be racist to white people. :) prejudiced, ignorant, stereotypical, bigoted? Yes. Racist? No. Racism describes a system of disadvantage based on race. As PoC were (and still are to an extent today) seen as "lesser" we don't stand to benefit from this system. For example, if a black person speaks out about something (like this video for example) sure, we'll have a debate, march or protest but as you've seen from the lack of convictions for brutal police killings of black people, not much changes. But let the right white person call a black person a thug or a Muslim a terrorist and they could be killed, imprisoned or at the very least vilified.

Yeah, that was bad. That was really bad. I am disappointed by Hollywood yet again. These are historical figures. Get it right or don't do it. I realize that after all this time that people have misconstrued my meaning of this being bad. I guess that was vague. The decision towards the movie, the makeup, the thoughtlessness behind actor choices was very poorly thought out and ruinous. I side with the expressors in this video. It is not okay for people to be doing "black face", "yellow face", "red face", "white face", "brown face", etc.... Zoe is an AMAZING actor and I love her work. It doesn't matter if the makeup was seamless/flawless. It matters that it was done at all. We say that we are trying to better than we were before, but that needs to start with what is shown to us since it is able to reach such large market. We need to be the people to change the mindset. We are the generation to do it. Because we are the ones to reach the masses at rapid rates on a multitude of subjects. So..... #waketheflockup

+Zoey Legend I don't think you understand the black community is very complex the lighter skinned black people get treated highly and get better jobs and roles while the darker skinned individuals get put down and don't get anything and it's way worst for women. It's bad because Nina talked about colorism and oppressionof being a darker skinned female it's a slap in the face to put someone lighter and probably didn't go through any of her struggles it's like doing a bio on Harvey milk but they cast Charlie sheen as Harvey milk it's a slap in the face I hope u understand
@amyduong9423
@amyduong9423 8 лет назад
+Zoey Legend black face is really bad. It's when Hollywood (or movies in general) will take someone (usually a white) and colour their skin to look like another race. Black face is oppressive because not only was it an old way whites made fun of black people back then but because no one should try and look a different race they are not. Nina is a good role model for the black community and when they decide to create a film of her, they don't have her played by a black person, instead they hire someone and but paint in their skin hoping it'll suffice, and that in itself is already horrible.

+Renny Vargas That is not the point. Whether you paint black skin on a white person or darker black skin on a lighter black person, it is still black face and still inappropriate on so many levels. you non-black people and ppl ignorant of colorism are missing the point. no one is saying she's not black enough to qualify. the issue is the director felt the need to make her skin darker and give her a fat black nose. why couldn't they just let zoe look like herself? if being a dark skinned woman wasn't a crucial part of Nina simone's life, then they would not have had to make zoe a dark skinned woman. but that's what nina's life was damn near centered around....her skin. it's about accuracy you guys. yes dark skinned people have played light skinned ppl but in those roles, complexion didn't really matter now did it. and based on your responses ....I now know why blond Hitler is leading the poles. peace.

Loriana Hines that's always happened in movies. It's called acting. There are white people who tan their skin to be darker or who lighten their skin to be lighter. People who gain weight when they're skinny or lose weight when they're fat. They change themselves to be that character. It's acting. We have great character actors like Gary Oldman and he has changed himself Every which a way to be someone that he is not. To tell a story. Right now he is in a movie about one of the most well-known British people in the world and no one is saying oh my God he's not fat? or why wouldn't they choose a fat person to play this role? or he's not bald why would they choose him? a but when they choose a ball person to play that role oh my God he's not old why not choose an old person to they play that role? No he spent hours in a chair putting prosthesis own so he can play a role so he could do his job... because he is an actor. Women play roles that are for men. Men play roles that are for women because their job when they get up in the morning is to be somebody else. I'm just saying...
@Panini529

Loriana Hines Quite honestly choosing another actress possibly even unknown who closely resembles Nina would do just fine. However will this unknown actress bring the star power that Zoe has to being the big bucks for this bio. It's about money, zoe is brown and that is close enough to Nina. Make up and a few additions with fill in the rest. That's Hollywood for you.

So no one is allowed to be upset that Zoe is playing Nina Simone yet it was okay when people went crazy about a black james bond, a black spider man, and black annie, or the fact that rue was black which were all fictional charcters. The disappointment for me has nothing to do with Zoe being Afro latina and not African American. Its the fact that instead of going with someone who looks like Nina in their natural form they decided to take a fairer skinned woman and add makeup to adjust her looks. And then they didnt even do a good job her nose looks obviously fake and her skin looks like they used paint from a halloween shop. Basically its not what was done its how it was done.

I think people are missing the point. Zoe is a great actress. However, Nina's struggle really came from how dark she was. It is obvious in the clips that they put makeup on her to make her look that dark. Whether she is black or not, it is blackface. I think the frustration is that once again, someone who is lighter is being cast instead of actually finding someone that matches that skin tone and has those facial features to share with Nina Simone since it was so vital to what her struggle was about. Rarely do people who are very dark given chances in films and here is one that is supposed to be talking about someone that is dark and they do not cast someone dark. It is upsetting and I can understand these females frustration. Even though I am nowhere near dark myself.

Why give the role to people who aren't as good at the job just because they're darker? Zoe is a great actress and earned that role, they don't just pick 1 person at random and say "you're hired" they do casting and pick out the right casts.
@nessie4215
@nessie4215 8 лет назад
+RoyalGaming It is that she isn't dark enough. As I said, the problem is that people keep saying what you are saying and assume that there are not people that are that dark that could have played her. There are actresses out there that match her features and skin tone that are phenomenal at what they do as actresses. Yet, they didn't get approached to play the part. It's about the fact that they put her in blackface instead of trying to find someone that can actually represent. Even Zoe in an interview said she didn't really think she was right for the part but thought the story should be told. It's really all about what the last girl said, the film is about her struggles as a DARK black woman. Why couldn't they just find someone that is dark that could play her. When I watched the clips before seeing their reaction, even I was so distracted by her makeup.
@meekxmouse
@meekxmouse 8 лет назад
Isn't it great how quick people are to say "oh, now you're complaining she's not black enough." No, we're upset that they decided to picked a woman (Zoe) who is several shades lighter that the person she is portraying. To add insult to injury they paint her as a dark skin (black face). There are plenty of amazing actors who could have played this part but instead they picked a lighter woman. Light skin and Dark skin has been an issue in the black community for a very long time. Light skin blacks like myself would often be used as bed warmer and in the house while dark skin blacks were used in the field. Moving into modern day light skin women are put on a pedestal and mistreating the dark black women. Black women come in many colors, shapes and sizes. Hollywood should never have to paint a woman darker to fit a part. There's talented actors who could have done the job just as well.

I hope no one gets offended by my comment! I'm just trying to explain why I think people are most-likely upset by the casting. I am an extremely light skinned half white, half black girl, but my mother is darker skinned and often tells me how she feels about things like this. It's historically accurate that back in the time of slavery, lighter skinned blacks were treated better than darker skinned blacks. They were allowed to live in the house and were not treated nearly as badly by slave owners. Nina Simone lived in a time with very prominent racism occurring. She had significance because she was a darker skinned black woman and as it was so very clear that she was black, her struggle to be successful was harder than a lighter skinned black woman's would be. Because of the shade of her skin, racism was even harder for her. Unfortunately, in todays society people associate the darker the skin with a worse background which is completely untrue. The reason darker skinned woman feel offended by this is because not only does the color of your skin have an impact on the way people treat you, but the shade of your skin also influences the way people see you. I go to a school that is very segregated by race, but my white friends are comfortable around me compared to my darker skinned black friends because they see more Caucasian features in my face and accept me. Dark skinned women have a right to be upset. There is an entire history of them being treated worse for the shade of skin, my own mother personally deals with this, so I have a slight understanding. I hope I didn't offend anyone, just trying to explain why offense is being taken to this.

There's a documentary on Netflix about Ms. Simone that is supposed to be really good. It's called "What Happened Miss Simone?" and I believe it had the support of Ms. Simone's family. No disrespect to Ms. Saldaña but I will not be supporting this film. To all of you who are telling Black people to "stop complaining" and "get over it" you obviously don't understand colorism or the effect it had on Ms. Simone's life. Or the effect it continues to have on more darker complexioned people around the world. The fact that a much lighter complexioned woman to portray Ms. Simone is ironic and deeply disrespectful. Smh. I bet some of you who are telling us "to get over it" are the same ones who went a****** over Amandla Stendlberg (I might have misspelled her last name.) playing Rue.

+nienke huijbens Just because it's not used in jest doesn't mean it isn't offensive. I admire Zoe, but this isn't right - this is saying that darker skinned women can't even play a darker skinned woman. This is an issue today because colorism still has an impact on the way people are treated today - the deeper question to this issue is why couldn't a darker black woman with these actual features be cast in this part. This, technically isn't blackface, but it is still offensive and is not just movie makeup.
@laylah2002

All the comments of confused non-black people are hilarious/sad. They don't deal with colorism, they probably haven't even heard of the term before, and instead of asking questions and attempting to have empathy and understanding, they stereotype, make false assumptions of Zoe "not being black enough" and probably didn't even hit the play button. As someone who is only half black with light skin, I could easily do the same, write this off as blacks against blacks and continue living my life in disgusting ignorance. It's when we learn to have empathy and understanding for one another that we can truly progress as a society. You people in the comments only hinder the progress that needs to be made. Dark skin people have it harder in both Hollywood and the real world. Acknowledging that doesn't mean you don't face issues. It says nothing about you. Acknowledge the problem and fix it.

To those asking the question was she not black enough or brown enough to play the role let me put it to you like this.. It is not all about skin, its about the fact that out of so many other talented black actresses that could have played Nina and who actually look like her (dark skin, thick hair,wide nose) they picked a black latina with little to no resemblance whatsoever. Aside from her more European appearance(facial features, hair) shouldn't it be a red flag that instead of picking an ACTUAL person who looked like her they picked Saldana and had to darken her skin , apply a fake nose and wig?? what thats saying to many blacks is that their appearance is not excepted its not palatable enough for the white audience. This isn't the first time either. The fact the Nina fought for acceptance of her blackness in its entirety and then to pick someone who not only doesn't resemble her but doesnt portray her well either!? This will be another Aaliyah movie...
@blipstercravings
@blipstercravings 8 лет назад
It's exhausting explaining to people the significance of this. The fact that being a dark skinned, black woman with very African features-was such a BIG part of Nina's entire identity matters. They put Zoe in black face, point black period. There are dozens of actresses who are just as, if not more, talented than Zoe who would have fit the bill. It's not that she's not "black enough", but that they had to paint her, give her a fake nose, fake teeth, and add a wig to make her resemble Nina as if she was some deformed grotesque looking person. Zoe looks absolutely ridiculous. Just watch the trailer and try not to cringe. For those of you not in the black community, you would never get it. Maybe this is a conversation that you should leave to people who actually matter- the people who understand. I don't want to hear another non-black, or even light skinned black person, talk about how they "don't get it", "they're both black", "this is the same thing that keeps blacks divided". Just go home, please. Colorism is so deeply rooted into the black community, but most importantly the black american community, that you could not possibly make a valid argument against Zoe's features not mattering.

you weren't listening at all, were you? If Zoe were to have kept her natural skin color, this would not be a discussion. The fact is in order to play this role she was placed in black-face, wore a prosthetic nose, wore a "kinky" wig to look like Nina. Forget about the girls in this video....forget about their opinions and Think about the little girls of today who look like Nina. Little bitty girls with Nina's dark skin completion, hair texture and wide noses. what kind of message does this send to them? when a society already told them that they're not beautiful and they're not good enough or pretty enough. How do you tell this younger generation that they're dark skin, kinky hair, and wide noses, in order to be on screen, they have to be"replicated" on a lighter skinned woman. That is the world we live in. please don't speak about things you have no idea about.

I don't think it's black enough necessarily, it's about in the black community there's strife between light and dark skin women and the politics behind that difference in skin tone. Nina's whole image was a dark skinned black woman struggling against a world that refused to see her beauty or humanity, through her music and strength in civil rights. Getting a light-skinned woman to put on dark makeup to play her feeds into the notion that dark skinned women aren't good enough, even if the biopic is about a dark skinned woman.

I think Hollywood is so focused on using big named stars to pull in viewership and money that they disregard if said star is even right for the role. They do that way too often. Yes there are many darker skinned actresses who could have played this, yes Zoe is not the right pick, yes this movie is not doing her justice by casting it this way. But in Hollywood's eyes Zoe is a big name, one of the biggest names that young people care about. Therefore she will bring in more young people who don't care what the movie is about, they just see it cause she's in it, and make the company more money. And that's how it works for most movies. Who cares if this actress is right for the role, her name will make us more money. It's so screwed up.

All buzzfeed can do is talk about minorities like they're above white people and help people play victim. I don't think there is anything wrong with a black lady being made to look more black so she can better portray her character. Now a white person doing that might be worse (it could be taken as racist, especially with features being exaggerated or something like that). These ladies need to not get their panties in a wad over something this small. They could be focusing on real problems (like reducing the crime rate in young African American men, or reducing the abortion/pregnancy rate in young black women, etc.)

I dont think that BUZZFEED explained this well enough for people who do not have the Black experience to understand. Let me try to break it down into it's basic elements: 1. The most egregious thing is that Zoe Saldana has said on several occasions that she is NOT Black! In the Black community people like these are viewed as being ashamed of their heritage. But to each his/her own. 2. Nina Simone was UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK. She suffered for it, she struggled for it, she strove for it. 3. Hollywood and society at large has a bias against the beauty of dark skinned women (and dark skinned people). Hence 'Black face', dark people were so discriminated against that they weren't even given the opportunity to play roles they were born to play. 4. Zoe Saldana is wearing blackface makeup and a prosthetic nose to play the role of a Civil Rights icon who fought and suffered to do away with the bias against the beauty and worth of dark skinned women. Let that sink it - it's like having a KKK member play Martin Luther King Jr., or a Nazi play the role of a Jew. This movie is EVERYTHING that Nina Simone struggled against. It's very cringe worthy just to see. I feel bad for Zoe, she made a HUGE error on this one. HUGE!

AGirlCalled NAN Did u read what i wrote? Or you're just ignorantly ranting. Skin color was important to Nina Simone! She was UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK and proud of it! Zoe Saldana has rejected her black heritage! Who are you to tell people of color what to be offended by and sensitive to? What sort of White privilege has infected you to dare tell us how we feel? Please if you do not wish to dialogue and understand us then keep away. Good day!

also i dont see you up in arms about jamie foxx playing ray charles. did you know he also wore "blackface" based on how you perceive blackface to be and he also wore prosthetics. you are just a little person picking on Saldana to inflate your own ego.

AGirlCalled NAN Shut up! Hush and listen. Jamie Foxx did not do Blackface, so stop being an idiot spreading false information. Jamie Foxx is already a dark skinned brother! And he identifies as a proud Black man. Zoe Saldana has categorically denounced her Blackness - she isn't Black and Proud! Meanwhile Nina Simone was and suffered prejudice for it. How dare you idiotically open your mouth to speak on other people's issues. SHUT UP, LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND! That's what we need more of, idiots like you to shut up and listen for once! Who the hell do you think you are to tell Black people what to be hurt by and the parameters by which it should qualify. SHUT UP!

+NarendraTheComic SMH. You have no idea what the video was about and that is just so sad. Only a white person with white privileged would say somethone like that. If you were Asian/latino/gay/disabled/ ypu would have huge issue with someone doing a biopic of an important historical figure in your community/culture and doing such a poor job of it.
@NarendraTheComic
@NarendraTheComic 8 лет назад
J. Hypolite Well, you clearly made the wrong assumption, because uhhh... I'm Indian! I am a minority, and I understand what this is about. They are making a bio-pic of a strong black woman, and they have cast a great black actress to play her. And of course this has nothing to do with white privilege you pretentious person

It isn't that she isn't black enough. It's simple actually. There are many women out here that resemble Nina. I honestly feel as tho they could've put someone new on the scene to play this. There are many women with darker tones that resemble her. Why put black face on a black actress. It looks horrible. Black face period is wrong. On blacks or whites anyone of that matter it's wrong

I'm jst so disappointed looking through these comments. There are so many comments I wanted to respond to but I won't even waste my time explaining what there is to be upset about because I see people will understand. I guess it really is hard to understand what it's like being black, having black skin tones, and being discriminated against because of said skin tone if you're not black.

+NotThatGuy I have nothing against her as an actress. I really enjoy her actually. But casting her as Nina wasn't appropriate. A lot of Nina's struggles were because she was Dark so why wouldn't the person portraying her be dark skin? It was obviously an important part of story if they had to put Zoe in blackface and make her darker. And I'm not saying Zoe isn't "dark enough " to be black. Anyone who's black is dark enough to be black and struggle in their own right. But she wasn't dark enough to accurately portray Nina's struggle.

Just a question to whites: Would you care if, say Halle berry or Jennifer Beals played Princess Diana or Marilyn Monroe in a biopic, since they're half white as well? This is a serious question as I know how black people feel when half white/half black people play full black people, but don't know how whites feel when half white/half black play full white characters. I mean no offense by this question at all. :)
@SuperConormcg

+katelynn767 I honestly wouldn't care. As long as they are good actresses. I think what has bothered me with this video is that here is an incredible black actress who is getting hate thrown at her because she's basically not black enough to play the part. I bet these would be the same people that if they picked a lesser known actress with darker skin they would of complained that they should of picked someone more prominent or better actress.

+katelynn767 I would think it is weird in an big production, because i know plenty more suitable people would have auditioned. Especially since black bone structure is so different. But if its low budget, just take the best actor you can get. The acting and emotions are more important. But lets say a darker white person (eg. arab) would play Marilyn in an big production. They would most likely wear a light foundation. I wouldn't think twice about it. Why not? They are acting, not playing themselves.
@ajdelay8232
@ajdelay8232 8 лет назад
+katelynn767 No! I could care less who plays a role. As long as the actor/actress is representing the message and character of the person they are playing accurately and respectively, then I have no issue with it. If makeup is used to help them accurately portray the role then kuddos to them for spending the extra money and making more effort to better represent the message of the film. An issue only rises when these things are used in a manner to mock or discredit the person being portrayed. Did the white community ever make an uproar over the movie White Chicks? No, we knew it was a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. For this movie however, it is a serious film trying to portray the hardships suffered and commending her for her brave actions and historical influence. Instead of, for example, crying over the "blackface" in the film, maybe acknowledge and thank Saldana for respectively playing her role in the movie. At the same time we have to understand this is a business. Yes, there is a race issue in Hollywood, but we should be thanking the casting in this case for actually finding an actress that is well mannered, skilled, respectable, and still falls into the same race as the portrayed character while also having the actin history and name to sell tickets to the movie. There's a lot more to casting than meets the eye. It isn't as easy as checking off a bunch of required fields for the role. In the end, it is about making money, so we should be thanking the casting for making the extra effort to actually find a well known and not busy actress that also falls into most categories as the role being played. So, to get back to your question, no. Most "whites" would not care at all who would be playing a role. We could have the darkest actor/actress on the planet playing the palest character in the world if they could accurately portray the character and if the studio wants to put in extra thousands of dollars for professional makeup to help the actor/actress to better look the part and better portray the character in a respectable manner then I thank them for going through that extra barrier.

@Erulassee

I hate that Zoe is getting so much criticism for this but I really wish she had turned down the role. I love her but no. Just no. This is quite insulting. When you live in a world that praises and elevates the exact opposite of what you are to the point where you can't even play the actual representations of yourself, it's a little maddening. I don't know how some black women are able to stay sane. I struggle with it myself. I think the last comment was so powerful. I suggest anyone who is genuinely interested in Nina Simone for who she is and what her life was about to watch her documentary on Netflix. Is so well done, I cried.

Hollywood is Racist, and yes, we shouldn't blame Zoe Saldana, but she did agreed to play a movie where she has to be in Black Face to portray a dark skinned civil rights activist. She had the power to say no. This is like a white person being cast as Selena Quintanilla. I don't blame the girl that started to cry, this movie is offensive.

I truly don't understand why people are upset. There have been countless roles in hollywood where an actor's' appearance has been drastically altered to portray a real-life historical figure. They were picked for their acting skills, not their physical appearance. Clearly, the casting people believed that Zoe had the best acting skills to play Nina. I'm also concerned that Zoe is being picked on for being lighter-skinned, which I find ridiculous

I understand where you are coming from and if it were some other story of a black person making it, I would be with you but Nina's story was about her afro-features, her fight was to be accepted with her board nose, full lips and dark skin to use an actor who will wipe away all those features when the camera is off shakes me to a level I can't describe. They could have found an actor with those features.
