I love going back and watching these videos because OEMs were in their bag in the mid 2010s and shopping for a phone was actually fun. Now it’s pretty much “do I want one of 3 iPhones or one of 3 Samsung phones”
I would argue at this point they had all already lost their faces, and were just android clones competing against apple, and maybe samsung at this point. I know blackberry had the keyboard but damn was it pointless in comparison to its other specs/features.
You forgot to mention BlackBerry corporate software, its meant to secure phone message and privacy, the target market was always corporate use, where most BlackBerry costumers rely on. This review left me with a bitter taste, a bit dissapointed frankly.
He messed up the amount of RAM (I'm on mobile so idk if he fixed in annotations) and he didn't even go over one of Blackberry's biggest features: security. The whole reason he waits to do these reviews is because he does a high quality, well-shot, comprehensive review of real world usage of the phone, and he usually does that, but this review left me disappointed.
+Ruy Daza Quiroga Yeah I don't like this review too. He is like 18mp camera with OIS nothing special lol. Personally I liked the phone. I loved what they did with the keyboard. I'm seriously considering buying it.
+Joshua Luzuriaga Actually, they should be offered on as an alternative model to a phone. Some people do feel like they prefer a physical key board, but the ratio is 5:2. More people prefer to type on a touch screen. Blackberry though, adds keyboards to ALL of their phones, when majority of people don't really need it. Physical "touch sensitive" keyboards will only heighten the price of manufacturing, making the phone even more expensive. Let alone, Blackberry is making the price a bit hefty to recover some past damages in revenues.
+Joshua Luzuriaga lets say 5:2 is the actual demand. ( i would bet its closer to 2:3) the priv is the ONLY current gen phone offering a keyboard. I agree that flagships should have flip out side keyboards like the droid. if samsung and other manufactures do this, i would love to see the sales numbers.
So true. Somebody has to do this! All the phones are basically the same thing in a slightly different package. Ever so slightly! I touch on this topic in a video on my channel and I'd really appreciate if you checked it out. I use the Priv to demonstrate my point. It's called "An Unusual Phone in Modern Times"
jano me The only problem is the dread of breaking the keyboard and you don't if it can be replaced or pay a hefty amount. Otherwise I like keyboards and adopt them happily but I don't think it's gonna be accepted well by people who are in the bezelless, thin phone age even if it's a niche product
+Abu Bruh You say 3gb of ram like that's something special. Almost every phone that came out in 2015 had at least 3gb of ram, and the Zenfone 2 has 4gb of ram, is 10 times better than this blackberry, and is one third the cost
the guy is a blackberry hater I'm not surprised is review was so negative even the verge did better then this review and the verge is always negative against blackberry
Yeah I'm getting a Priv. I get it-touch screens are the common thing now, but ever since I left my Blackberry Curve behind for all touch screen androids, I've been annoyed with the touch screen typing. Luckily, software can be updated and Marshmallow will come after the new year. Every single phone I've ever had hasn't been perfect (and that's after having two Samsungs, one HTC, two Motorolas, and one LG) so I expect a few issues and kinks in the beginning.
+Tom Van Renen OOH a person who says that must be so scared of being called a racist. Clearly he doesn't give a fuck, how about something more constructive?
Is it just me or was this phone pretty epic from the outset? The hub, the productivity side of things, that little hub selector up top to centre on the notifications you want to use is smart! Imagine if a current android/iphone notification shade had that!
Marques im speechless at how much your videos have improved and gone beyond perfection in such a short time, i thought you were making top-notch videos a year ago! But looking at you now, you have raised the bar once again. Well done, and nice work on the videos! Probably the best editing ive seen in my whole life, seriously.
+Big Papi Samsung and a few other manufactures are designing fully flexible and curved screens, next generation of clamshell phones will have the screen being able to completely snap together at a perfect flat angle. Definitely would help protect the screen when you're not using the phone.
+ARMOR15 most chinese manufacturers actually make them because they're still popular over there. You could import one.(buuuuuuuuuuut that's not the best)
Favorite phone I ever had. Still have it but it won’t hold a charge for long. Got it when it came out in 2015 and used it everyday all the way to 2020.
why arent people liking this phone? i mean i think it's absolutely amazing! the multi tasking menu, the extra features, blackberry hub and what not. the physical keyboard is amazing and even the camera seems nice, OIS and all. and most importantly i think blackberry made use of that curve waaaaayy better than samsung.
+Names Don't Matter aren't* I* multitasking* The* And* . But in all honesty nobody said the phone was bad but compared to most other flagship phones this doesn't seem very compelling.
people hate this phone because it's blackberry I guarantee you if this was the Samsung Galaxy S 7 everybody would say it's the most amazing phone ever made it's because it has that black brand name and people and you think of blackberry don't think of high end phones I think it looks like a tremendously good phone I just can't use it on my phone carrier and its cool it runs blackberry or runs Android I just say and it has a blackberry keyboard and that awesome blackberry virtual keyboard that you can find on the blackberry z10 which I still think that phone is a great phone is highly underrated but I can't say if I like this one or not because I never use it
trever pitts preach!! As a former android phone owner I did like the interface but I did not like that I couldn't manage all my school and business emails on my phone and the phone broke various times on me (I bought a s3 at the time) I switched to the z10 and never looked back. I have never had to repair anything and its still snappy and a great build. I cant wait to get try the priv when its available with my provider:)
+CharlieHipHop don't be mad at his review he is coming from Android using an Android phone he's not coming from an old school blackberry looking at this phone as a Blackberry user he's looking at this phone as any Android or iOS user picking it up that's why you saying it's weird to have a keyboard and he always uses the highest in quality phone from Samsung iPhone that's one reason why he says. the picture and video quality is lacking when to the average person they might ask you say wow that's a pretty awesome phone I mean he does make a ton of money for reviewing products but at the end of day he is reviewing this phone as an Android user not a blackberry guy try an Android app for the first time. Check out TechnoBuffalo is review it is more honest honest
+CharlieHipHop Please elaborate. That review was very fair. Its not the first time someone has accidentally said a wrong spec. MKBHD has used and tested WAY more phones then 99% of us. It is quite easy for him to find it's good qualities as well as its flaws.
Before I bought the phone I watched your review it made me skeptical of getting it but when I seen it in person and it was in my hands I had a change of heart. You never know how good of a phone is until it's in your own hands and get a chance to play with it..
All I can say is WELCOME BACK BB!! I am totally in love with this incredible machine,I can't understand all the negative reviews about this phone. BB and Android, what a MARRIAGE. Everything about it is seamless and functions perfectly. I am so glad I didn't listen to all the bad reviews and so glad I used my own judgment. One thing tho loved the passport keyboard over this one, the only flaw in my opinion, and yes, it will take some time to get used to it..
I kinda like this phone. it has decent specs, nice design, awesome physical keyboard and the good good software with Android. Marquees hates BlackBerry and this led this review which wasn't fair. I expected a review like the one he gave for oneplus two where he did not consider any hype and here he considered all the history of BlackBerry. actually this time Jonathan Morrison gave a better review on the priv. way better review.
@mkbhd you could have said that many issues like the shutter delay and a lot of stuff could be improved with the software updates but you didn't. why so?
+Dylon Swartwood I think it had to do with the fact that it was a pre production unit, there were alot of bugs in those units software but blackberry fixed them all in an update. :) i think it's one of the better android skins out there.
How did you like it? I'm really curious what you think of keyboard phones in general, actually. Especially since it was your first one! I did a video on it on my channel and if you'd like to check it out, that'd be awesome. I use the PRIV to support the motive of the video.
***** no you're not... This review contains so much negativity, he always see from the negative side, and also the specification is wrong, how could he? 😓
Yeah i know, this time it's so obvious right? Even Verge done a better review than this, despite The Verge is the most biased reviewer for anything except Apple devices. Smh
+Rayhanantha Rasya He basically says "the phone is good but not for me." Why is that so bad? He pointed out the exclusive features of the device and then gave valid reasons for not liking them. Personally the keyboard point resonates for me. As a person with big hands that thing would be useless to me, though I do miss hardware keyboards sometimes.
Definetly looking forward for Priv 2! This a major step by BB and a really good one. I hope they choose a top of the line processor and fix those UI bugs and add a neat camera next time. This one has got my attention but i will wait for its 2nd gen.
+Edgar Martinez You're allowed to have an opinion, what you shouldn't have is an unreasonable opinion like how The Verge worships Apple products without touching on the negatives of those Apple products.
I'm looking for a new BlackBerry .The Priv felt great in my hand and looks fantastic but too techie for me as I'm not the most technological person. I'm looking to stay with my BlackBerry (have a Q10 and a backup Q5) but it's on its last legs. I'm a RU-vidr who's trying to make his channel (mostly a hobby) more professional and serious but what BlackBerry would you recommend out of the Leap, Q10, or Z10? I'm looking for a good camera but also something that's good for social media. I don't want to have an abundance of apps on my phone however. Any recommendations?
Do you feel like the KeyOne is a step back? They took away the slide out keyboard, which I'm surprised and disappointed by...I suppose the rest of the phone is an upgrade but they took away a feature I thought was really smart! I did a video on that, actually. If you wanna check it out, that'd be awesome! Really want to know what you think.
BB should hit the market with their all new and even cooler BB OS again, oh boy that would be a complete awesomeness! Well, my first BB phone was a BB Curve 8520 that still works smooth, have many more BB’s with me that am proud of, namely; BB Passport, BB Passport Silver Edition, BB Leap, BB Porsche Design p9983, BB Porsche Design 9982, BB Classic, BB Bold 3 & a BB Q10.
+EVOL SCAVENGER You'd think a $1000 phone would be 4-5 times better than a $220 phone, but that's not really the case. Take the Moto G 3rd gen for example. It has an HD 5 inch screen, water protection, ability to customize the exterior, sd card slot, it's unlocked, has an all day battery life, it's fast and snappy, has a decent camera, has the latest clean Android version, and it looks nice. But in a $1000 phone (Like the iPhone 6s plus), you get a better display, nfc, faster performance, fingerprint reader, better camera and more storage. In reality the iPhone is better than the Moto G, yet missing some features a $200 phone has.
I'm... actually impressed. I didn't think they had it in them, but this looks like a decent phone. Not going to leave my Nexus for it, but I could see it competing with the Galaxies and Notes of the world for sure, especially with that launcher/skin.
Im team apple but id love to have this phone. Just the style is beautiful. Id like to have it as a second phone n use it rearly but just having it n holding it feels great n satisfying I guess. Beautiful phone
+AstronGuy No clue what it is called. It is just a 3 second little beat. Look at any of his "old" videos (well not that old, just until a month ago maybe?)
Still use the Priv today. Replacing it soon, but I've had it since launch and it's done me so well. The battery finally is giving out and it's gotten very glitchy in recent vintage. It has been a great phone for me and my most favorite phone I've ever had. Many good things about it but unfortunately time has most definitely passed it up. Hopefully sometime soon BlackBerry will get back into the game but I'd rather them take their time and do it right if they do. If you are looking for an older phone because you don't have the money for a brand new one, I'd definitely recommend it. Going to really miss it.
I was impressed with your review. Thank you so much for the in depth details and thank you for your time. I was considering purchasing this phone and your review is helpful.
I like how your review was actually on the spot and I think it was just a regular review, compared to your other reviews I don't see much deviation from that but people still say it's biased and that they like this phone a lot. I see that as a good sign. I don't think there is anything special to say about this blackberry but I am a huge fan of this phone. It's looking great I think for a first android smartphone from BB it is absolutely amazing, the design is incredible the keyboard features too but that's where it ends. But really this phone will raise BB's marketshare everyone seems to love it despite it being not that different. But one design difference can make a huge difference in people's minds :) Priv 2 will be a huge success I think.
This a negative-toned review. Honestly, I just watched the Samsung S7 review and I didn't hear one negative thing about it until 3/4 the way through the video. This phone is not as bad as this review makes out.
This phone really looks.... quite good? Maybe using it all the time exposes what it's lacking, but from your review it actually looks pretty good.. Sounds like a software update could make this phone an absolute beast?
Hub rocked.. shame so many mindless people only like android or apple. I personally loved BB10 operating system in the Z30 back in the day.. it was amazing. Here we are in 2020 and Android 10 now uses swipe sorta like BB10 did way back then.
Two years ago, I would have bought the Priv. Now, that Lollipop is doing well and my Note 4 can enjoy the Swift keyboard following my mind's speed, I do want more than a physical qwerty. BB implemented few nice tweaks to its qwerty, which are enough and productive, soI look forward to customizing the keyboard as I like.
Honestly, after watching reviews on many different sources, I figured that you were, well, negative on this phone for odd reasons. Phonearena in it's video said in the end "if your main concerns are privacy and a physical keyboard, thin this is the phone to get". And that's what blackberry is really known for, security and privacy. And come on yo, a physical keyboard. I would love a physical keyboard goddamn.
I think it was a fair review. I've seen other reviews say the same stuff about the camera and a bit of lag on some apps. I do believe the true androaid fan boys do approach reviews on the priv with a negative spin but I don't let all that influence me. I've checked the priv out and used it a little and it is an awesome device and I can't wait to get it.
Saaame!! Such a sick concept, really wanted to see some updates. I did a video on exactly this!! If you want to watch it and share your thoughts there, that'd be super appreciated! I'd be interested to hear more of your thoughts!!
The Priv doesn't look that great but the incorporated keyboard with tactile controllers is a killer. I'd consider getting a Priv when there's a CyanogenMod build for it.
