Have you tried using Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD with Vmix software (www.vmix.com) as a media control for live streaming. I want to buy Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD. but very doubt it can't be used in Vmix software. because I've been using vmix for video mixer software in live streaming so far, is this competent with vmix software. if you have a tutorial, please make a video. thank you
Hello! Faced a problem. When connected to the Sony a6400 Atem television studio HD, only black screen and sound are output. The format on the camera and the switcher is correct. When connecting other models of cameras, everything is in order (for example, Fujifilm XT-3). How to solve a problem?
Good question and good that you checked about the frame rate/resolution. Though I suspect that is still the issue. It could be something else but it’s almost always a frame rate/resolution problem. Do you have another device that shows resolution and frame rate? Some external monitor for example?
There is an external monitor, but it does not seem to display the format and resolution of the signal. Do you think the camera recording and HDMI output settings are different?
problem solved. It turned out that the sony a6400 always outputs 50fps via HDMI, regardless of the selected frame rate for recording. Only the resolution can be selected manually for HDMI output.
hello how are you all, now I have an ATEM blackmagie STUDIO that does not work the multiviwe that can help me to repair it I am from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, if you know I can send the equipment for its repair, I will be grateful from all of you, I repeat my BLACKMAGIE ATEM STUDIO ITS MULTIVIWE OUTPUT IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY THANK YOU ALL
I'm unimpressed. Having 4x SDI and 4x HDMI was the only plus. Not having a reasonably priced control surface is a killer. And still no way to play media without paying much more. Yahn. And now I find out it does not do capture. This thing is a step backwards.
Hi - Thanks for the great reviews, they have been really helpful. I've bought one, but I'm struggling to get it to recognise a Powerpoint signal from a Laptop. Have you managed to do this? Do I need an extra bit of kit to make this work? Thanks
The lack of being able to split the audio to mono is a negative. The mini range has this ability but this unit doesn’t which is a great shame and causes issues when using certain audio devices.
Hey! Have a question, I use the Roland for my church, has a mac plugged in, and a camera. Wondering if the BM will strip hdcp when running slides from the mac? Or will it not allow video output because of the mac?
BMD products do not strip or play well with HDCP at all. You may find the Mac works well sometimes and not so much other times. Best to avoid HDCP content.
I prefer this one as it has more inputs. I’m using up to 6 inputs for some events and the Roland just can’t handle that much. With that said, the Roland is still a nice choice if 4 inputs are all you need!
Haven't got my hands on it yet but I'm going to be using one of these for smaller events when the other gear is already being used.. other gear being a 1 m/e 4k and 1 m/e panel. We already have a bmd television studio which was our backup and I've operated that with a mouse before... Best feature is the AFV and ON buttons for audio. It is very inconvenient to have to use the software to swap while you are operating on the 1 m/e panel and we don't have any midi / xkeys setup. I did not know on the old one the usb output a h.264 stream.. that could be useful!
I agree about the tiny cut button. Being at the bottom of the rack isn't the most convenient location. A quick double tap on the preview monitor button to cut to that monitor would be a nice option instead of the tiny cut button.
I think having the program screen down there is annoying. bearing in mind that you have to hold it up for you to operate it. I dn't know what position they expected the users to use it. It's a major con for me.
Maestro, they expect you to either hook it to a laptop and run software on that, or into a monitoring panel, which they sell. You'll notice the MULTIVIEW HDMI output on the back panel. That's what it's for. Plug a HDMI monitor into it. This unit is best suited to being put in a rack mount with monitor panels, such as the Smartview Duo from them. I've also hooked a small laptop using the Ethernet CONTROL plug into a small switch, and then viewed the unit on that laptop using BM software. Works great. Not sure if this unit allows the same, but I bet it does.
Random question, looking at purchasing this product for my HoW. The VideoHub Master Control Panels offer removable buttons for customizing the labels. Do the pushbuttons on this switcher have the same capabilities?
Hi, I have Atem Mini and Mini Pro. They are great for small events. Never the less sometimes I need 5-6 inputs and send program feed to multiplay location. In your opinion is it still worth to buy Atem TV Studio HD today?
I'm not so sure it's the best time to buy. (I have no idea at all) but I would suspect they will refresh some of the bigger ATEMs this year, so that is why I would hold off. That said, you may not want to wait around for nothing!
Quick question. So the SDI outputs labeled 5,6,7,8 send out PGM outputs right? So I could use these to feed signals to let’s say a FOH projector, a green room, etc. They don’t just pass through the video input of the corresponding SDI input right? For some reason, I can’t find information on these outputs in the official manual. I’ve been trying to find a definitive answer to this.
Correct. They all pass out PGM so you could use them all just fine. Same for the ATEM TVS Pro 4K as far as I know. The only difference in those PGM outputs is talkback for camera operators but that won’t matter at all for your use case.
Hi, I'm looking for a switcher that would allow me to send the same source to 3 different program outputs with the option to send a different feed to different output as needed. would you recommend this? Thanks
Hi John, great videos and thanks for all the info. Not sure if someone has asked this yet? But.... Has the unit got some sort of freeze function, in the the event that you running 1 laptop like I do most of the time, always nice to be able to hold last slide of a PP Presentation and load next peresentaion or simply load the hold slide/ event logo. Asking all these questions as I am looking at investing in one of these and a freeze function would make life sooooo much easier. Do you have a possible "work around"with the above request? Thanking you in advance for your assistance. Have a good day. Regards Sean from Cape Town South Africa.
Hey - freeze is not a function of the ATEM (except the brand new atem Mini they just announced!) you would have to do a lot of other gear to make a workaround right now
I wish i could help better but my suspicion is that the camera are not outputting what they say they are. I would connect a camera to the ATEM and try going through every frame rate setting in the ATEM to see if any work.
No issues yet with overheating but it certainly gets warm when paired with a HyperDeck beside it. A couple of fans are definitely worth bringing along.
Great video but missing some info I was looking for. Was hoping to see a full demonstration of the device actively switching camera/video signals, seeing the multi-view, showing the upstream/downstream keying, and the way that the software looks on your laptop. Also, you failed to mention one of the more glaring 'cons' of this device in that it does not scale your input signals to your desired output resolution. I've been told that all your input signals must match your desired output resolution by use of a decimator (if needed) in order to achieve this. Thanks!
oh yeah good point. I'm sure he forgot trying to do everything in the video. Anyway, yeah I personally use one of those red Decimator devices. I don't have that many feeds coming in. For me it's my two cameras (GH4s) and then the program feed of the slides from the house AV. So I use the Decimator to scale the House Av feed 1080P23.98 which is what I'm rocking with my GH4s. I have a GH3 still that I love as a 3rd cam, but it outputs 59.97 so it needs to be convereted too. But the decimator can only `scale one thing!!!
Thanks for the great review. I'm thinking of using this to feed two projectors at a live event using the SDI outs and a Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converter at each projector. Can you tell me if I will have to worry about delay with the live sound? The camera on the speaker that will feed the ATEM will be a Sony X70 using the SDI out.
You will most definitely have some delay on the projector screens however I believe it will be quite minimal and not massively noticeable - it’s only when you are cutting to live music that you will see a real difference.
You can indeed- the audio section can be controlled by a midi keyboard in Mackie mode. I made a video about controlling the audio part of the software.
Hey John, Good information. I’m working out whether this unit or the atem. Mini is for me. What I want to do, multi cam live streaming of bands with good audio coming from engineers desk. Does this unit encode ready for Facebook/RU-vid or do I have to go through OBS or use an external media encoder? This unite has balanced inputs for audio which seems more convenient aside from the extra inputs for SDI cams. Cheers, Andy
Hey! If your planning on streaming right to FB or RU-vid then the mini is your best bet as you can connect via USB to a computer and stream very easily. Other atems will require you to purchase a separate device for live streaming. Cheers!
just a question: can I change the plugged cameras 30sec back to back without software? I can do this automatically with AUTO knob? is this function programable/settable? or how works the AUTO function? what is this function?
Do you mean you want it to change to a different camera every 30 seconds? The Auto function is a fade between two sources as opposed to the cut which is a hard edit between two sources.
@@heretorecord just I don't want to change the connected two sources manually, the question is: with the AUTO switch can I change the cameras automatically (and can I set the duration parameter? )
I need a mixer/switcher what I can set to show the image of first camera 30 sec long, and fade to second one and show that image 30 sec, and fade again back to the first camera...etc...
HI John, great to see you are getting the ATEM TVS HD. I want to know if the SDI OUT port on the back is specifically for communcation things with cameraman? Is there anything to use that as normal PGM OUT so that i don't need to but another SDI distributor?
hey john ! thanks a lot for this video! I would like to know if you can modify the transition effects, and what would you recommend, this atem or the roland v-1hd ? thanks again :)
great video. Just unboxed mine today and am excited to get it fired up. Using it for a house of worship and connecting 3 cameras. I am then intending on running it through wirecast, but after watching this video, not 100% certain I even need to do this? Really want to use wirecast so I can add lower thirds and on screen graphic, what do you think?
Excellent. Hope you enjoy it! We’d recommend getting familiar with how the Up Stream and Down stream keyers work within the ATEM. They’ll let you add graphics (static images) and then go from there!
Thx for your video. Yes, I got a question: I know that this device is unable to capture the channels for mixing on the Mac. Is there any solution outside, with wicht I'm not only able to produce live-content on the first hand like with this ATEM Television Studio HD, but also be able to use as a capturing-box to get the cam-streams for live production software like mimo Live oder wirecast? (or do I have to buy Mini Recorders additionally?)
thx. I know, but output is under 60fps. I'm wondering that BM was not planning computer capturing to this device. As I know with ATEM Television Studio (the older one) it was possible to capture threw USB... Seems to be that I have to buy DeckLink additionally.
I was looking for exactly this kind of a review! I could find non before but blabbering excited hyper streamers!. Thanks for your detailed and useful review! I need one of these.
You earned it :) . If possible, would like to see how to setup this for a two camera stream, using a computer to do graphics such as lower thirds. Do you need to have a recorder and decoder with this? TIA
I have the HyperDeck Studio Mini (full video coming this week on that device) which I use for recording. As for graphics, I tend not to need that for my setups so I don’t have any sample content yet - but it’s a great idea to make a video about it some day :)
AFV means that when a source is live, you will hear it's audio. If I was switching back and forth from Cam1 and Cam2 with AFV on both sources, the audio would also switch back and forth between Cam1 and Cam2
Ok, thanks. Is it possible though to make an audio source, from the xlr inputs on the back of the atem, follow two cameras? In a multicam stream, so it's the same audio all the time @@heretorecord
Thx for the good videos. I plan to use this device as a replacement for laptop with OBS/Wirecast + umpteen grabbers for conference lecture recordings. One potential issue I would like your opinion on: I usually crop speakers and do a side by side with the slides. If I understand correctly, this is not possible with PIP functionality on the unit?
Thx! For anyone else researching this I happened on this thread with participation from yourself: forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=65152. Due to this limitation I think I'll stick with OBS, maybe upgrading from a laptop to an ITX system to have more power and expandability.
Hello! Thank you for the video! Do I need two computers to stream on the Internet? I mean one computer for controlling the ATEM (using Blackmagic software) and the second computer for doing the streaming (using OBS or other such software)? Or is it possible to use the same computer both for controlling the ATEM and streaming? Thanks!
You can certainly use one computer. The ATEM Software Control doesn't require much from your system at all. You will of course need a capture card though for the streaming part!
Hi thanks for this great video. please what would you recommend i buy to enable me take the signal from the blackmagic device into computer for streaming?
@@katuasmaek7018 thanks António. Is there a capture card in the form of a self powered device? I intend to use a laptop for streaming and not a desktop PC. Thanks again
Hello my friend 👍 thanks for sharing! I'm a little jealous won't lie 😁 in the market for a budget HDMI switch, so far I did pick up a blackmagic mini recorder, in addition to a wireless mic. Inspired by your recent live steam
Hi, Thank you for your time to share all these reviews. I have to make a sports coverage event with 8 cameras. Each camera should have the scoreboard on it. So I have to buy 8 Atems in order to make 8 PiP. Do you think any other way or equipment so I can make the 8 separate Pip?
Hey. Buying 8 atems would be a bad idea for sure as that would make for a lot of complications. Maybe you should look into vmix and do it with a PC, capture card and software solution.
Hi John, Great video, my Name is Eric, I'm the guy from Barbados who mentioned in the chat on your stream on Sunday about my plan to use the Web Presenter for a streaming business i am putting together, I collected it on Monday and I am sold on the Blackmagic eco system, the Atem HD is my next goal as soon as my current investment begins to pay off. Keep up the great work !
Amazing, wonderful and perfect Video switcher many thanks for your information! I have a question! How we can backup the mix videos could you please explain it in video like this please! MANY THANKS, BASIR AHMAD AHMADI
Ahh I see what you mean. In that case I use another recorder. I have a Video Assist monitor and recorder which allows me to capture the edited/mixed video. The ATEM does not have a recorder built in.
I’ve found many examples where it is different. It’s especially true on some cameras that use 1080i but wrap it in p and lines get very jagged. There are many examples of course where it doesn’t matter either way.
