Thank you for this! Question.. something that gets me really confused 🤔 is the fact that 1- Resolve can't work/edit with proRess, so why does the generator give us proress? 2- H-264 and 265 are great codecs for delivery ... but extremely compressed and difficult to edit with: so why are also those options as proxies in the proxy geretaor? Am I missing something? 😂 Thanks & cheers!

Hey! So 1. Resolve absolutely can work with and edit in ProRes! (In fact very well..) 2. A lot of cameras shoot in h.264/265 so that's why that option is there and also Proxies are not meant as final deliverables. They are usually meant as temporary files just so you can playback and work easily and smoothly. Let's say you shot in 8K RAW on a Red camera. You may ONLY edit in 1920x1080 h.264 for easy playback and then at the end you can relink easily to the raw files and export in any resolution and format. Hope this makes sense!

@@FredTrevinoColor thanks for your answer! So I guess I was late realizing Resolve can edit with ProRess, (probably can't with ProRess RAw then? or it also can...?). So many editors told me that H.264 is hard to edit but great codec to export with ... that is why the confusion ;) thanks!

@@wildpatagoniafilms16 Yea h.264 is a deliverable codec but a lot of cameras shoot on it like DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. If that's all you have then that's what you need to edit with... As far as ProRes, it was designed for editing and deliverables. But, ProRes Raw is a nightmare honestly and Resolve isn't too friendly with it. Its a post headache for most productions I've worked on and requires extra steps to get it into Resolve.

My opinion is that BMD created the Proxy app to coincide with the release of their cloud system, so that people could create proxies to upload to dropbox and update in real time when working with others or another computer/ipad etc. So as of the launch the codecs used are delivery proxies and not my ideal idea of the best solution if your system is older or has less resources. Seems a bit nonsensical to create proxies of the same type as the codec that gives a lot of people problem in the first place. I think that until they add more codecs, right click your media and set up your own proxies and types from the project settings. Ypu are going to have a much better experience using intermediate codecs like ProRes LT or DnX sq - larger file storage, but will play and edit extremely better with older systems.

With proxies do we only edit or color?

Typically proxies are only for editing and then you color grade the full quality files. But, depending on what proxy format you create and where the project is going to be shown, you can grade proxies too. Like if you go from a 8K Raw file to a ProRes 422 proxy you might just grade the proxy.
