Blackness Castle is often referred to as ‘the ship that never sailed’ due to its great stone ship appearance - with its pointed stem, square stern and tall mast.
Blackness Castle isnt one of the most visited in Scotland, but it became much better known after the Outlander series.
Blackness was never just a peaceful lordly residence - its enduring roles were as a garrison fortress and state prison. Enemies approaching from the land met with a brute mass of masonry (the 'stern' tower) and cannons fired through great gunholes positioned to give all-round firepower. Then it was used until at least 1745 as a prison.
