Nice work Glen, just found this old video you made and the barrel section is just like the rope tie-downs I made years ago for a vintage truck. The curve allows the ropes to run smoothly without cutting when you tie down the tarp or the load. They were mounted just under the edge of the flat bed, but yours looks a lot prettier, lol.

I'm continually impressed by your humbleness. You not only are teaching us but when someone gives you an idea, you try it and then share it if it works. Kudos.

I like when folks give me reasonable suggestions. In this craft of ours, we can all continually learn... Thanks for your support.

Thanks so much Glenn. Would love to see more combination of two pieces. Really you are a great master. Grateful for your sharing and teachings!

I will certainly do more videos which combine two or more pieces. I appreciate your kind words and support. Thanks.

I like the style you chose for that hinge. It’s old world looking, very cool. Great video!

That is a really novel way to make a hinge. Something tells me you'll tear the screws out before deforming that hinge. Love your work.

Brian, Yes, this hinge needs slightly larger screw holes to accommodate more suitable screws. As always, very glad you continue to watch... Thanks.

Very interesting design, never saw that approach before. I think I will use something like this as the hasp for my box build.

Neil, And the way I go about my blacksmithing, this style might be never before and never again! I think this is more suited to being a hasp and will probably alter it. Thanks my friend.

Christopher, it started to get a bit iffy but in the end, worked out OK. Thanks.

This video has really given me some ideas. I like the hinge/hasp. Nice and beefy. As long as the screws hold, its not going anywhere! Enjoyed watching.

James, I can see how this can be taken in other, more decorative directions. Thanks.

Lou, Oftentimes in my blacksmithing I do before thinking too much. Sometimes this works out, sometimes not... Thanks.

Form and function daddio and many thanks for your blacking secret that was maybe the first. Old school need a tool make a tool and you doit effortlessly and clean. Aka style. Thanks for being the bob ross of blacksmithing
@gstongs
@gstongs 6 лет назад
George, I know for sure my wife will disagree with you calling me the "Bob Ross" of blacksmithing. I'm way too loud and obnoxious and he was the king of calm. If you really want to blacken a piece, get it to a very dull cherry heat and drop it in a bucket of old motor oil (obviously be careful for a flareup and have a good cover handy). My spray method is maybe a first and should be a last - not too smart on my part. Thanks.

Great stuff, thinking about attempting a heavily strapped box / chest - you’ve inspired me to attempt some hinges too! Appreciate it, keep up the good work!

I think that would be a great use of this style of hinge. Good luck in your hinge making, etc. Thanks.

Dave, I roughly calculate my usage for each tank and can usually predict when the last day is and plan my work accordingly. But the outside temperature does affect this. In hot weather, I get more uses.Thanks.

Jack, Yeah, it had me nervous too! At the end of the day, if a piece doesn't work out I just call it abstract art... Thanks.

You can rely on a forged hinge, it will last a lifetime, longer than any wooden structure.

Nice Glen, is that for you or a customer. What is that gurgling noise in the video, sounds like water or something?.

As James and Len have pointed out, my new camera (phone) always translates background noise in this way. You calling it a "gurgling" noise is spot on. It's annoying the heck out of me and I'm getting close to changing cameras. This hinge is for me... Thanks.

Maybe you could link an older video, but what do you have under your anvil's for support, and what is it you make for a living?
@gstongs

I mostly make tongs, hammers and other various tools. And as far as what is under my anvils., I'm actually planning to make a newer video regarding this soon. Thanks for watching. Happy Holidays.
