Not all things go according to plan. I had one vision and approach but ended up with something much different. Yet in the end... It's all about function and this one tasted Delicious!
My uncle had a steel pan this size, but his had feet on the bottom of it. He bought it in Korea while he was there for the Korean war with the Marine Corps. When I was a wee little boy, he used to park me at that pan cooking beans while he and my dad cut timber. One of my earliest memories is of me wrapped up in a itchy, green Marine Corps. surplus wool blanket, tending the fire and cooking beans during a damn blizzard in December in northern Kentucky. I can still see my uncle Jim handing me a giant spoon like you'd hand a sword to a knight, handle first, resting on his arm, and saying "Don't you burn them beans, boy!" I imagine some Korean guy back in 1952 went through pretty much everything you're going through in this video, Chandler. Keep heatin' and beatin', buddy! Love the videos!
We used to make a small pit in the ground fill it with wood, once reduced to coals cover the coals with rocks and once the rocks were hot we would put a cast iron pot inside filled with beans, brown sugar, a spoonful of molasses, onions, and bacon... and a bigger pot upside down and over it(handle welded to the bottom) then burry it... let it slow cook all day while we cut firewood and some of the best baked beans would come out of it for dinner.
You started sounding like Justin Wilson. That looks like the same kind of pan my Uncle, the lumberjack cook, cooked with! Now you are making me hungry and missing my uncle.
Only about 20 minutes in on watching this video, but with the way you are talking about it the size of that pan makes me think back to my time I spent in the Boy Scouts. That pan would have been great in use during our camping trips.
Cook up your bacon then do taters on one third, eggs on another, with sausage taking the last third... Perfect size pan for camp cooking for 2 people. One pan to cook up the whole meal makes for less dishes to do. I had a steel pan about that same size and condition for camping and loved it, me and the ole lady would make breakfast in one pan and when we were in a group camping it was perfect for doing up the taters for everyone. Sadly it was stolen with a bunch of other gear and I never got a replacement for it beyond a Teflon pan of the same size. One suggestion for such large pans, put a handle on the opposite side, just a simple loop handle, if you have something heavy on one side of the pan it can tip really easy when picking it up with just the one handle.
BREAKFAST ANCHELADAS or however you spell that! I really like this build and i think itd be best suited for a boyscout troop. I recommend shrinking the boarder first and the working it out to be as perfect as you want!
Chandler, I think it'd be cool if you made and/or tried to make some woodturning gouges. I think they're just thick rectangular pieces that are rounded long ways down the center then sharpened.
as an aspiring blacksmith ( I dare say that term ) I want to say thank you for your videos. They are both inspirational and informative. I hope things are going well for you, Chandler, my name is Robert.
Chandler what you need to do to get a perfectly smooth just like you would for a piece of armor is get a planishing hammer and post that way you could smooth both sides at once by the way brother hope one day we can do a collaboration together I'm a farrier and blacksmith out in Oregon
The other pans hand forged that have no hammer marks. They may hammer the bulk of them out but the reality of it is that they just grind and sand them all out.
Love your videos! I think I have watched everyone! After the first I might be getting a anvil and some tongs! Im so ready to go after these projects I have been watching! Between you and Christ centered forge I have the itch bad!! Hopefully the next time you see me it will be Stage Forge not freaking sweetness! An ex girlfriend did that and I don't know how to get rid of it!! Have a safe and happy New Year my friend!!
Did you ever try again a Shop Floor Knife? It would be awesome to see it properly done, and there isn't anyone on youtube who's done better (that I could find).
Perfection.... Right up to the point you poured the milk into the eggs. Giant mistake but so many people got that bad habit from somewhere and it has permeated our society for generations but it is wrong. If you want to know how to make perfect eggs that wanker Gordon Ramsey has a video on RU-vid about it and it is spot on the right way to make perfect eggs. Thanks for all the videos for all these years Chandler love your content
Some may say it's not perfect...however its hammer forged. That's not something one gets at Walmart. If at some point he decides to planish it out more then more power to him. In the end, "It Will Cook "! Lol Thoroughly enjoy watching both videos!
Enjoyed the video! Have you tried a smoothed, 4 inch cast iron pipe cap with the flatter to smooth the hammer marks? Kinda like an auto body hand dolly? Guess a stand could be made by putting it on a length of pipe? Thanks for all your videos!
Anybody ever call you a dirty name or three? Well they have now you have me and the wife wanting taters and onions, bacon and eggs Thank You for the video ..
I had to go make myself something TWICE once the cooking show started lol Looked delicious and if it wouldn't cost $100 to ship that pan to me, I'd buy it for camping. Would be great for campfire pizzas, low pot chilli, etc, etc!
