Good evening, I know this is an old video, but I'm new to helis and just traded a rc buggy to a friend for his used, slightly crashed 330s, haven flown it but just did a spin up test after replacing the blades and other few items that were damaged, and it had a decent wobble/vibration. Sure enough, bent shaft, didn't think to really check it. So thank you for the video, diffently save me from future issues. Thanks again, fly safe.

There is a thrust bearing in the blade grips, as well as the sealed bearing. It is very important they are installed correctly and greased with silicon grease. Also use locktight on the spindle bolts. If they come loose it will be a carbon fiber spear that could be deadly! Also replace the tail blades, they turn much faster than main blades so balance is an issue. I really enjoy your videos and you have a nice family, don't won't anyone to get hurt.

I had a feathering shaft malfunction that sent a blade flying right past me on a trex 450 10 years ago. I happened to get it on video. I always paid close attention to detail when building helicopters like my Trex 700N but someone else had built this one. After that I always took apart head assemblies and re assembled them correctly myself.
@TechNoPhobiaGirl
@TechNoPhobiaGirl 2 года назад
The part you bent, Brian, is called the 'feathering shaft' (or spindle). It connects the two blade grips together. You should NOT bend it back, it should be replaced with a new one (cuz you'll NEVER get it perfectly straight again!). Lots of guys straighten them, like you did, but I wouldn't do that. It'll get you flying again, tho, until you can replace it with a new one. Nice job, tho! To REMOVE the feathering shaft, remove one blade grip, like you did, and then pull on the ATTACHED blade grip and the shaft will come out. Don't forget about all the thrust bearings, tho, and MAKE SURE they go back together in the PROPER order/orientation. The 'bare' ball bearing ring you referred to is called a 'thrust bearing,' and it's comprised of THREE pieces. DON'T MIX THEM UP or turn one (or more) of the pieces the wrong way around! They MUST be put together the CORRECT way or they don't function properly. Once you REPLACE the feathering shaft with a new one, the vibration should go away, I would think. Really enjoyed your coverage of the 330, Brian. As always!

Thanks for sure! Always learning new stuff, especially with heli's!!! Okay, I THINK I got the thrust bearings right, but if I didn't - is there a trick to knowing??? I also, as mentioned in another comment, didn't grease them when I put them back on....can I use white lithium grease???
@Bill14886
@Bill14886 2 года назад
Brian Technophobia nailed it. Take his advice and order replacement parts. Get a couple and keep them in stock. Same with extra Blades , and ⚙️ gears. Once you crash a few times you'll get better at repairing theses birds. Remember blue loctite will be needed on that feather shaft. It's a must. Loosing a blade at full RPM can put a eye out. 👁. If you put to much loctite on something: heat the part with a solder iron pencil tip for a few seconds to soften the loctite. Oh don't forget to balance your blades. Lots of videos on that on you tube. A couple of tall glasses and long bolt 🔩 will do the trick. Lots to learn . Good luck , you'll be a pro in no time😁
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Thanks for the tip! Blue loctite - check ;) I will check out balancing procedure. I have a fixed wing plane prop balancing tool, and have had varying levels of success.
@MikeSarni
@MikeSarni 2 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC You won’t necessarily have to balance the main blades I never did but the tailblades on some models do cause resonance enough to make you visually see some pretty decent vibrations. So I usually do what you do with airplane props I’ll stick a piece of tape on one Tail blade if it gets worse I move to the other blade and I’ll just try to get it close ( meaning size of the tape) to where it’s not vibrating Bad or causing an issue …. You probably won’t get it perfect but you will get it running way better that’s all that matters.

Also those “broken” looking bearing are called thrust bearing. Always grease them when putting everything back together. I have tons of heli. Repair videos on my channel. Also always pull the other side of the feathering shaft bolt out and re Loctite both screws.

I keep blades, tailblades and feathering shaft spares. The tiniest bend in that shaft will throw things off and they arent expensive. Locktite is also important on those screws holding the blade grip to the shaft. One of those babies comes loose someone could get impaled.

Hi Brian, please replace any part that gets damaged. I have flown heli's for many years and even in a minor incident you can do more damage than you think. Main and spindle shafts are common parts to bend, even so slightly. This can create a very dangerous situation if not addressed. I have seen carbon fiber blades come apart and nearly hitting me and others.

Bigger helicopter are almost easier to fly in 3D mode than they are in safe mode once you actually learn how because just having that additional cyclic authority and being able to make those steeper banks makes much tighter turns possible. It's easier to turn and thus you are less likely to spin out thus losing orientation and crashing.

Best to just replace bent parts. You're never going to get them perfectly straight just eyeballing them. I have had my fair share of improvised repairs to where I got the helicopter to look vibration free but when I take off in a stabilization mode it just banks and pitches uncontrollably. Any minor vibration can cause a crash especially if you use any sort of stabilization mode. Your helicopter may look like it's vibrating less but that's only because you're taking the vibrations out of resonance frequency but if the frequency/amplitude happens to be something that the gyros don't like you might put yourself in a lot of trouble.

Wouldn't it make sense to change the throttle % while in safe mode to 65% with no cut out when you pull the stick down? When you flip back to safe mode at least your motor rpm would not fall off if you have the stick under center.

LOL you’re getting more comfortable with helicopters and I’m getting more comfortable with fixed wing. LOL any chance that those pitch links to the blades are adjustable? I know on some larger helicopters they are. Only reason I ask ‘ cause it almost looked like your blades were out of sync but then it could’ve just been the camera angle. Cheers if both blades are out of sync and not in the same pitch at mid stick should be 0° pitch than your travel between both Blades will be different and you will get vibration

I can't say, but agree - seems, thought, might be even more catastrophic ;) Although, seems an infinite level of sensitivity between imperfection and actual values on a heli - and I consider myself "picky" - maybe just not a true heli pilot "picky" LOL Thanks!!! Its the flight controller. I had one that did some crazy unpredictable stuff in safe mode. It would pull right soo hard that full left stick would barely keep it in one spot. Hi Brian! I have a question that’s unrelated to this video. Is it safe to use one lipo battery for four esc’s in parallel? I was contemplating on using one 5000mah 3s 30c battery for my 1600mm Freewing B17. Is this advisable? Or will this set up cause an overload to the battery and blow it up?! Thanks! BTW, love your videos!

Depends on the load. Should be no problem, but just make sure you have enough current and C rating to cover your load. I don't know why it would be a huge issue. I've run 4 EDF's on a 3S 5000mAh pack myself. Big thing is to make sure you don't go crazy on throttle.

@@BrianPhillipsRC thanks man. I’ve tested a 5000 mah 30c 3s on my Freewing 1600mm B17. On 3/4 throttle for 3 mins straight, everything went well. Battery did not heat up. With 35% charge left thereafter.
