This film was surprisingly good, and is actually a decent psychological horror, which was very surprising!

I remember I watched this years ago. I didn't think it was great, but I didn't think it was bad either. The original movie feels like a one off thing. I think any sequel would've been disappointing in some way, like you said. But for what this was, a movie literally rusher to theaters less than 1 year after the first one, it was pretty good.

today is July 2. in the early 2000's, Syfy used to air this movie as part of their Fourth of July marathons. That association burned so deep into my brain that now I watch both Blair Witch movies (BW3 doesn't count) every July 4th (and only on July 4th), in addition to a few other occult-themed horror movies, every year. This movie had a profound effect on my taste in horror, music, women (into Goth girls before that became a meme) and spirituality (I practice my culture's traditional folk magic). Thanks for everything BW2. Can't wait to watch you again in 2 days!

This was always a guilty pleasure movie for me. It's like an R rated Scooby Doo movie. Surprisingly good cast of unknowns, nice little mindfuck plot. I would say it doesn't need to be a 'Blair Witch' movie but I don't have and never had any particular love for the original. In fact I thought it was dumb.

My favorite of the three. Sheriff Cravens is my favorite character.. "YOU OPEN UP THIS GOTDAMN DOOR RIGHT NOW!!" And yes, I know that was the witch impersonating him, but that doesn't make it any less hilarious 🤣😂

I seem to remember a TV spot for the film back in the day where either Kim or Erica is holding a book with old photos in it. And the people in said photos come to life mysteriously. Obviously, said scene never made it to the final cut, but the name "Book of Shadows" was still used for reasons. Maybe the book played a big part in the plot of the film originally, but they cut it for budgetary reasons. Just my theory.

I loved The Blair Witch Project, and to this day admire it for it's unique concept and production approach (I've already pre-ordered the impressive looking Second Sight boutique release that's due in November). However, I was was also among the many who was deeply let down by BW2 when it came out. But time and perspective change things. Having since heard what Berlinger was going for and having just recently seen a re-edit that approximates his original cut about as closely as possible, I'm in total agreement that BW2 is both over-hated and underrated. In a way, it really reminds me of what happened with The Exorcist and Exorcist II: The Heretic. In both situations, the studio was in a desperate hurry to cash in on the success of the original film with a cheap, unimaginative retread, but made the "mistake" of hiring a director who had the entirely different intent of making a film that was not only unlike its predecessor in tone and execution, but provided a reaction to what they saw as the negative aspects in those films, in spite of their success. So, yeah, I think both The Heretic and BW2 have both suffered from a great deal of misunderstanding, if not undeserved hate and abuse, and I applaud the makers of both films for having the integrity and bravery to follow their own vision. Having said all of that, both The Heretic and BW2 unfortunately are not at all undeserving of much of the criticism they've received. In the case of BW2, the main fault lies not in the concept or the style or the overall direction, but mainly in the characters. As you've pointed out here, the characters come off as annoyingly obtuse archetypes. They are merely avatars, placards, placeholders where actual human beings should be. Whether this was intentional or not, and whether it's due to the writing or the acting or a combination of both, it really hurts the film, as at no time are we allowed to connect with or care for the lot of them (except perhaps Tristan). They were there to state the particular perspective of a very broad archetype, rather than embody an actual character. This is where I feel the film could have taken a cue from its predecessor (and been all the better for it) by giving us genuine human beings - as opposed to snotty actors talking in meme-speak - without at all sacrificing the unique vision and intent of the film they were trying to make. Just my two cents. But it's nice to see that others appreciate the film for what it is - an entertaining and thought provoking companion piece to an exceptional, one-of-a-kind classic. I am totally comfortable embracing it as a part of the Blair Witch legacy.

Facts. Blair Witch 2 flew high over people's corporate heads. Also, with look of the black-haired, backwards walking little drowned girl apparition and the weird time stamps from the video production equipment, it may have been influential on Gore Verbinski's The Ring.

I watched it in the cinema, and it still scared me, and me having to curl up to the guy sitting next to me in the cinema auditorium. It was badly cut, but it has a lot of spooky things in it.

The characters represent different types of fans (or just people who are interested in it) of the first movie's universe. Jeff is someone who wants to capitalize on in. Tristen has a predisposition and an attraction for the occult. Stephen is sceptic but finds the lore interesting. Erica is Wiccan and is concerned with prejudice and Kim, well, Kim just thought the movie was cool. It is nice that they fall in the group hysteria Stephen always talks about, but at the same time we don't really really know if there isn't a supernatural element. The drinking part you are not a fan of adds an extra probable "why" for what happens next. I heard of that fan-made edit before but I never saw it. Do you know where I can? For me, the Berlinger's meta commentary idea is perfect for a sequel... love the attention to detail like the backwards words through the movie, similar names between characters and actors, "Rustin Parr" fixing a fridge and saying the "I'm almost finished" line, etc. Just a shame he had interference from the studio.

I'm glad more people appreciate it, when I found out about it it was in a horror movie channel, kinda cheap since they had a lot of J-horror and low budget movies. But I loved it so much althought I did notice the weirdness brought by the out of context scenes

its still one of my favorite movies - and I am old enough to see the blair witch project in the movies. But... I absolutely love how they work in that you can't be sure of what is real and what is psychosis and what is the witch.. it's a shame that it's called blair witch anything, because had it not - i'm sure it wouldn't have been hated so much

I also liked this sequel (especially the "caught on camera during filming" fake stuff they did as a bonus on the dvd). Joe Berlinger's original script is online somewhere and is, of course, much much better than the movie we got. Still, BW2 is an original. But Joe Berlinger would get to do his own horror masterpiece when he went on to film Some Kind of Monster.

Blair witch had some of the best marketing of any movie, made everyone i know believe it would be the scariest movie ever. But the movie was not good at all and im from Maryland where the story takes place. Movie got u to a point where you were about to get scared but didnt seem to have the budget to put anything physical in the movie to actually really scare u.
