i remember when there was just one! that was so mysterious and different, not to mention terrifying and make no mistake back then, it was just that, in ssort it's a film where every sequel or prequel will fail because it was brilliant.
and yes aliens is ranked as the best sequel of all time along with godfather 2 and empire strikes back but nothing matches the first, for its artistic originality.
That's why first seasons/select episodes of Mandalorian are so good. It's a mercenary/adventurer going around helping villagers against bandits or monsters and all. It's great. Now of course they also didn't get what was good about it and they went all the way away from that.
Lucas never understood the success of the original trilogy. He made one of the most gritty, lived in sci-fi/fantasy worlds and followed it up with plasticky cgi sets, jar jar binks and fart noises
I wrote this video before the Acolyte came out. I am aware that it takes place like a hundred years ago or something like that. That being said it doesn't seem like it leans into fantasy anymore than any other show or movie.
THANK YOU. Star Wars was meant to be a swashbuckling sci-if-themed fairytale. It’s lost nearly all of that identity, beginning with Phantom Menace. Such wasted opportunities
I Watch this one in theathers when released it was great never understand the hate maybe if this was released some more time ahead would do it better i guess.
today is July 2. in the early 2000's, Syfy used to air this movie as part of their Fourth of July marathons. That association burned so deep into my brain that now I watch both Blair Witch movies (BW3 doesn't count) every July 4th (and only on July 4th), in addition to a few other occult-themed horror movies, every year. This movie had a profound effect on my taste in horror, music, women (into Goth girls before that became a meme) and spirituality (I practice my culture's traditional folk magic). Thanks for everything BW2. Can't wait to watch you again in 2 days!
I have to agree with you, it only took me about 30 years to figure it out. I saw this when I was a kid on HBO and was unimpressed at the time. Years later with the assembly cut I was more accepting to it and now I'm more on the side of this being a really good movie(assembly cut). Is it a good follow-up to Aliens? No, but it is a good alien movie even if it wasn't what we wanted.
The characters represent different types of fans (or just people who are interested in it) of the first movie's universe. Jeff is someone who wants to capitalize on in. Tristen has a predisposition and an attraction for the occult. Stephen is sceptic but finds the lore interesting. Erica is Wiccan and is concerned with prejudice and Kim, well, Kim just thought the movie was cool. It is nice that they fall in the group hysteria Stephen always talks about, but at the same time we don't really really know if there isn't a supernatural element. The drinking part you are not a fan of adds an extra probable "why" for what happens next. I heard of that fan-made edit before but I never saw it. Do you know where I can? For me, the Berlinger's meta commentary idea is perfect for a sequel... love the attention to detail like the backwards words through the movie, similar names between characters and actors, "Rustin Parr" fixing a fridge and saying the "I'm almost finished" line, etc. Just a shame he had interference from the studio.
That Neo Tokyo track in the background is class Also, since i've considered Alien 3 to be the end of the franchise Resurrection was a fun watch to me because it feels like a non-canon wacky offshoot of the franchise that's focused on having fun more than anything else
I watched it in the cinema, and it still scared me, and me having to curl up to the guy sitting next to me in the cinema auditorium. It was badly cut, but it has a lot of spooky things in it.
Very well put. I say that in essence, ALIEN 3 is the last film so far that takes the premise of ALIEN seriously. Dan O'Bannon created and wrote ALIEN inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, and ALIEN 3 embodies the nihilism of it. Indeed ALIEN 3 makes the ALIEN franchise complete as the end of Ellen Ripley's story, and as in Lovecraft's stories, there are no happy endings in real life most of the time, nor loved people always survive. I also described ALIEN and ALIEN 3 as the adult films within the franchise, while ALIENS is the family friendly adventure for the kids, hence its ending. ALIEN 3 showed exactly more what the previous films we're told about the Company, Weyland Yutani was all about with their appearing at the end. And Ellen Ripley sacrificed herself to a world that didn't even know about her, as well as convicts that looked for redemption for their past crimes. Then the most unlikely survivor made it at the end, and his laughter was not of mockery for the dead, but for that whole irony of his survival and their sacrifice. Indeed ALIEN 3 and mostly The Assembly Cut are great films in the franchise, again, the only film so far after the first 2 to take the essence of ALIEN seriously, and in fact it was not even a flop at the theater at the time.
Best score (I think Elliot still considers this one his magnum opus), best set designs, best assemble cast, best dialogues in the franchise. And still many so-called Alien fans look at this one as the shittiest of them all. Oh, they killed Newt and Hicks off the screen...get the f...k over it. I still don't know exactly why, but for me, Alien 3 is the most rewatchable flick in the franchise, especially the Assembly Cut. Maybe because I'm a sucker for these kinds of dark, bleak and hopeless movies. It just was the perfect way to end Ripley's journey, production problems aside.
RE: Hicks I'm not particularly fond of Corporal Hicks. I resist the tendency some people have to import their love of The Terminator's Kyle Reese into this far less compelling character. However, if I were a very cynical producer on this film, I would find some way to preserve the character for Alien 4. Maybe there could be two EEVs instead of one, and the EEV containing Bishop and Hicks could land in the water. The remains of Bishop could conveniently wash to shore, while the fate of Hicks is left ambiguous. Or, alternatively, they could both remain "drowned" until the next movie, which could reuse the premise of William Gibson's script. (I've also considered the possibility that "Hicks" could show up with the Weyland-Yutani team at the end and try to persuade Ripley to come with them, only for him to be revealed to be an android with a hastily-applied new face, but that might be a bit too far-fetched. Still, I've never really bought into the idea that the company would assume that she would trust the face of Michael Bishop after her bad history with androids.) RE: Clemens I would have kept him alive until the med scan scene. I'd also shuffle things around a bit to make it more effective. Right after the alien is successfully contained (as in the Special Edition), Ripley feels chest pain and asks Clemens to scan her in the EEV. As they're going off to do that, Golic sets about to free the alien. The chestburster is discovered in the scan, and Clemens expresses doubts about his ability to remove it without killing Ripley. She feels that it's better to terminate the queen regardless of the consequences to her, and Clemens agrees. But right then, the alien rises behind Clemens and kills him while Ripley watches helplessly from the cryopod. Now, this would naturally mean that the earlier scene (with the alien and Ripley face to face) would by necessity not have Clemens in it. The easy solution would be to have him administer the shot, only to be called off by Andrews to meet with everyone in the mess hall. Ripley, half-sedated from the shot, would be especially vulnerable in the moment, and that would be sufficient to keep the scene horrifying without the need for a character death (especially since we get one immediately afterward with Andrews). So Clemens gets to live just long enough to help win the prisoners over to the plan for trapping the alien, thereby giving the audience just a glimmer of optimism before proceeding to punch them in the gut once again.
the trailer was better than the movie. the movie was awful and didn't do the game justice. it's too late, the damage is done part from the games tragic story this movie was the real tragedy.
Ouch! That was brutal😔 In all seriousness, while I do really like this movie, you’re right about everything essentially I saw it when I was in high school and while I did take issue with running zombies I still thought they were effective in invoking dread. It also was kind of the first movie I ever saw in which main character immunity was arguably NOT a factor. I was familiar enough with these characters to have their rather abrupt demises take some effect but you’re right, it’s near impossible to flesh them out when there’s so damn many. On the other hand though it was very fast paced: the action, the chaos, the characters’ deaths of course. It may not be up there with the first but it did effectively make me feel uneasy. Basically, you could argue it’s dark and somewhat brutally realistic in terms of outcome. You could say they make bad decisions but it almost if not officially works for this movie because again they’re striving for shock and to be fair the anxiety this universe creates can easily prompt these choices. I mean I guess when you stop to think about it, sure, it makes no sense that they’d leave the mall but as I’ve pretty much said twice already, I think, the fast pace and the anxiety is a good distraction
I repressed the memory of this movie for so long then youtube recommends me the key that brings it all bad. I hate this movie so much lol James Mccaffery was wasted in this movie. Had literal Max Payne right there, voice and acting experience and all. Had access to Sam Lake. I don't get it. What really pissed me off is that MP is so grounded in reality that they could've just retold the story and it'd have been perfect. Fumbling an adaption like this is insane af, I'm still not over this. I wish they'd just give Remedy the full rights, at least we're getting remakes....soon.
