Known in some circles as the best guitarist on the planet, Malibu native Blake Mills was already making waves at the tender age of 19. Since then, he's produced and collaborated with some of the biggest names in the biz, including Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, The Killers, Lana Del Rey, and tons more.
In conversation, Matt Sweeney learns about his pal’s solo technique, Indian-style guitar, and how to deal with a young guitarist blowing his hungover mind.
Original air date: May 21, 2013
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

No joke, back when I first saw it maybe 5 years ago, this video launched my deep respect for Blake Mills’ music and guitar playing. As a hobbyist guitar player, I’ve learned a ton from listening to his albums and interviews.

It's back up!!! Did anyone else watch that Russian dub version of the episode just to listen to that outro again? I am glad the original is back.
@danielstoddart
@danielstoddart 6 месяцев назад
I did...that was crazy. But it messed up the dialogue pretty badly because the Russian dubbing was loud and made it hard to hear the English. Glad to see a clean copy is up again!

I got to see Mills do a sound check at a recorded live Public Radio show. I have seen a number of great artists do their sound checks; I have never seen a more meticulous setup than done by Blake Mills. He was literally sculpting the sound he would produce in the live show. Needless to say, the live show was flawless. It was a number of years ago and I have never forgotten his attention to detail.

@dbob3405 4 месяца назад
@@versnellingspookie it was on WV Mountain Stage which is a public radio music show taped live and based out of Charleston WV with multiple acts per show. REM did one of the 3 unplugged shows they ever did there. The other 2 were on MTV and I think they did one in London. Great show; eclectic acts. Mills did a 6 song set. I think it is available on RU-vid as well as the audio is at the NPR site. Search Mountain Stage/ Blake Mills on Google or RU-vid-good luck.

"The Major 7th Thing" as Blake Mills calls it (at 6:07) sounds a lot like what I thought Robbie Krieger, the guitarist with the Doors, was trying to do with the song "The End."

i like Blakes comment about studying different types of music because my guitar teacher used to ALWAYS tell me the guitar players with the best phrasing are people who listened to a lot of horn players. I think Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia also had a lot of ability at making their guitars sound like different instruments as well especially on songs like Dark Star, Eyes of The World and Bird Song.

It's like watching birds fly. They know nothing of aerodynamics or pressure differentials..... they just fly because they are birds. That's, for me, how Blake Mills operates. The instrument, even his hands, are merely the materials. It's his ability to imbue his music with his humanity that really soars.
