Bland Anime Protagonists. Dress Up Darling has a lot of people talking, even now that the new anime season has closed. Been seeing a bunch of wacky opinions on Gojo so let's look at him. Generic Anime and Generic anime protagonists do exist. There's plenty of bad anime - I don't think that's controversial- but let's not equate good writing falsely to a bland, generic, or underwritten character. Anime! Wow! You should subscribe and come hang out!

I don’t know how ppl can say gojo is sexually uninterested when he’s literally just not a pervert. He’s very clearly physically and sexually attracted (and romantically of course) to Marin, he just doesn’t overstep physical boundaries

The fact that's it's considered below the bare minimum for not being a pervert for a male character in anime is the norm now really is. 😬😬😬 As a girl, I enjoyed watching Gojo figure out his feelings for Marin and vice versa. I'd rather much have someone like Gojo who's respectful then have some horndog ogle me then claim to have "feelings". Partners don't want perverts for partners, and I think it's pretty good that Gojo was actually the center of a shoujo anime. It seems to me that the most romantic and well-written male characters are written by women? Like Pride and Prejudice.

Thank YOU! As a woman, I am just so SO tired of sexual aggressiveness being tied with manliness. It isnt, believe me guys, most girls don’t look for that. Myself included, I once thought those were tied concepts and that I as a woman should just deal with it and stay silent because “boys will be boys”, right? Turns out it took a huge toll on me, mentally. I personally find guys who think way less about sex much more attractive because people are PEOPLE and having other activities and hobbies in mind other than sex is normal too.

I find it strange that "he just needs to get with her already" is even a take with Gojo... I mean, not strange that it exists... I know the exact mindset that brings on that kind of thinking, but like... have people identified what the barrier is between Gojo and acting on his attraction to Marin physically? I ask this, because on the surface, it seems obvious... but as soon as you say what that barrier is explicitly, it seems stupid to criticize it. I think the primary reason why Gojo doesn't just hop in bed with Marin, is because of the assumption that there's a level of disrespect which comes with a man's sexual attraction to women. like, in reality that doesn't _have_ to be the case, and it _shouldn't_ be the case in a healthy relationship... but it's a pretty realistic hurdle that many men struggle to navigate. the waters for respectful sexual attraction have been tainted by certain archetypal behaviors and mindsets. and in fact... I'm talking about the very behaviors and mindsets that a lot of people are criticizing Gojo for not displaying in the first place. as a person, Gojo's main goal in getting to know Marin is to make his first friend since childhood... he doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize their connection to one another. and to that end, he doesn't want to come off as though his sexual interest in her supersedes his interest in her personality, aspirations, or well being. he's trying not to be an asshole to someone he cares about. the irony of his connection to Marin, is that she is fairly unabashed about trying and succeeding to look hot on purpose, and after a certain point in the show, she would love to know that he reciprocates her feelings... but Gojo doesn't know how to communicate that without feeling like he's doing something wrong. and like, a big part of Gojo's trepidation is the fact that he hasn't had friends for so long, and he really doesn't see himself as being wanted, needed, or liked by anyone. it's a part of his unique psychology, and it's what makes you aware that there's character writing going on with him. like I said, he's trying not to be a jerk to someone he cares about, and to him, that means letting her decide whether to accept or reject him, moment to moment. he's still getting used to the fact that she consistently chooses not to reject him socially. it'd totally break his character to have him suddenly toss his caution to the wind. it's how you know he doesn't just think she's hot... he really cares about her. and actually, the same can be said on Marin's end. she likes goofing around and teasing Gojo, and sometimes she can be pretty oblivious, which is where a lot of the ecchi comes from... but she's also constantly checking his reactions, and backing off if he seems wildly uncomfortable with the situation she's putting him in. and this means two things: one... if you like the ecchi scenes, then give Marin credit for causing them her damn self, seriously, you don't have to bash Gojo for not being assertive, Marin's got you covered. and two... Marin actually cares about Gojo's feelings, and has to show it by being considerate to him too. like... _wild_ concept, I know. but early on, Marin overstepped a bit of a boundary with Gojo. it was a total accident, she didn't know he was planning on pushing himself in order to meet the deadline she'd mentioned offhand, like... to her it was obvious that she'd probably miss that con deadline and have to plan to cosplay at a different convention, but Gojo didn't know that. he labored under the assumption that Marin would be disappointed if she couldn't go to that event, and he pushes through. it's an admirable show of work ethic, sure, but also... Marin ends up crying because she feels like she accidentally took advantage of his skills for her convenience, while ignoring his personal needs. and what she learns from this is not only that she needs to communicate her intentions better... but also that Gojo is the type where you might have to watch him, because he might not set his own boundaries himself if he thinks it'd disappoint someone. the idea that a guy might have boundaries, or that he might not be ready for everything that the girl in the relationship is ready for, is like... actually fairly progressive? because you rarely see that represented in a way where the girl stays invested, and waits for him to catch up to where she's at in terms of wanting a relationship. I think people aren't understanding Marin either, because like... Marin is tempted by him. she finds him attractive, she wants to go for it, but there's something holding her back too, and it's... respect for Gojo. if you're the type that can't respect Gojo as a character, then you don't understand Marin either.
@fraktaalimuoto

@@loregoblin3854 well written. Thank you. The point about not being able to set boundaries speaks real to me. As 20 something man I had a relationship with much more sexually experienced woman. I was not able to set my boundaries properly, and the whole relationship in the end traumatized me. Often men also need to take their time before they are ready in a healthy way.
@loregoblin3854
@loregoblin3854 2 года назад
@@fraktaalimuoto I'm really sorry that you had to go through that... I really understand what you mean about needing the ability to set boundaries, and it makes it so valuable to see representation for relationships where both people understand that. and yeah, this is why I think My Dressup Darling works really well as a cozy comfort anime. often times, it can be frustrating to watch two people dance around their feelings for each other in a romance plotline... but in this show I think it works, because for Gojo and Marin, the core of that dynamic is their mutual attempts to make sure that the other is okay. it's a classic case of mutual pining, but it's bolstered by the fact that the leads are believably really good friends to begin with. anything that puts their friendship at stake will feel monumental to them, so they have to take care with each other. and I think the really wholesome part about the show is knowing just how much the two want to be mindful of each other's feelings. I think everyone deserves that level of consideration... I'm glad this show can have it's fun while also reflecting that.

People who criticize Gojo as “bland” or a “self-insert” are missing the point of My Dress Up Darling. One of the reasons I love the manga is that Gojo is just a teenage boy with a passion who is just socially “underdeveloped.” Not in the sense that he’s a “Herbivore male” but that he’s avoided having friends for so long that he’s not sure how to act or be around other teens. “Bland” would be like the MCs whose *only* traits are that they are nice. You know the ones. What separates Gojo from them is that he isn’t just nice- he also has a PASSION, his own priorities, his own connections, and a background that explains why he’s the way he is. Gojo felt incredibly insecure about his interests and how it would affect how his peers see him. So he stopped himself from getting closer to others. But instead of just wallowing around in self-pity, he put all his time and love into his family and doll making. In addition, he was raised around a traditional Japanese craft and likely raised with more traditional values. It’s like you said, MDUD does a great job addressing the parallels and contrasts of the traditional and the modern in Japanese society. All of this logically means that Gojo’s a character who (1) doesn’t do well around people closer to his age and outside his family and (2) is more comfortable with his quiet lifestyle rather than the one of the modern Japanese teen. This doesn’t make him bland, but a character that is a logical product of his environment. And the point of his character development is that he eventually grows out of being comfortable with just his quiet life. That through Marin, he finds value and beauty in a world that once scared him. Marin (and eventually other characters) come to admire Gojo for his TALENTS and genuine personality, and that leads to Gojo opening up to others more. My favorite parts in the later chapters of the manga are when Gojo gets to experience the things he originally denied himself. His development is wonderful because he’s still kind and gentle Gojo, but he doesn’t fear others anymore. TL;DR: just because Gojo isn’t a “proactive” male protag doesn’t make him “bland.” “Bland” would mean that he has nothing going for him past being “nice” or [insert an anime personality trope here] and it doesn’t go deeper than that. But all the context in MDUD shows that Gojo isn’t that at all. He’s a character with a lot of complex emotions and great character development.

So, i appreciate your attempt to redeem him, but at best it means Gojo is peeking out from the ocean of blandness, not that he's out of it. Even MCs that aren't just nice can be bland, for one, I forget the name of the dude, but the anime was about this guy who is strong as heck and has killed the demon lord on another planet. He kidnaps his daughter and basically throughout the series he seduces her and comes to "Love" her. It's a classic high school, magic, probably ecchi school anime. The MC is proactive and not sexually/romantically passive, but he still has the personality of a mud brick drying in the sun. Aside from his irregular jokes coming in from time to time, he has nothing to offer except being very overpowered. Now, Gojo is the same in blandness. The only thing separating him from the ocean is the narrative gimmick, if we want to call it that, of him being a doll maker. Only girls do things with dolls, something something dude does something feminine and that's bad yada yada, you know the story. The foremost issue with Gojo is that he doesn't change, and that's interesting for a lot of people. If a character doesn't change, then it must make up by being interesting, which he isn't. He's relatable, but not interesting. I feel like that's something very overlooked since 2005 when something being relatable is more important than actual substance.
@pinkraven7043
@pinkraven7043 2 года назад
@@BygoneT Heavily disagree and you missed my point about how Gojo DOES change, and that’s what makes the story endearing. I’m not sure if you’re just an anime-only watcher, but if you are then you’re missing half of the story. As of the latest chapter of the manga, Gojo has become more open with those around him and has even become more comfortable with reaching out to people. To the point where he is welcomed by Marin’s friend group and realizes that most of his anxieties are in his head. Some of my favorite scenes from the manga are Gojo getting to be a normal teenager with Marin’s male friends, because that’s something he would’ve NEVER considered at the beginning of the story. There’s also seeing Gojo become more enamored with anime/manga and grow to be a genuine fan. Not because it’s “relatable” but because it’s nice to see how Gojo is open to something that never caught his interest before and can find the value in it. That’s something a lot of anime/manga fans have been trying to get non-fans to understand: that anime/manga may seem weird at first but there’s a real reason people love and value the medium so much. Which works in parallel with Gojo’s love for Hina doll. And his character conflicts are not JUST because of the incident with his childhood friend and the whole “guys can’t like dolls” bit- that whole issue was already settled when Marin told him outright that all that gender stuff doesn’t matter. Afterwards, it’s more about how Gojo is more traditionally and conservatively Japanese and how that doesn’t (on the surface) mesh well with his more modernized peers. So Gojo’s main conflict is with dispelling his anxieties and realizing that there are people who won’t dismiss him for who he is and what he loves. And also some funny bits about how there are people who are no different from him (e.g Gojo’s ecstatic to see that there are anime fans who baby and talk to their character plushies.) TL;DR- there’s actually context in the story that disproves your point that Gojo doesn’t change. Whether you find him interesting or not is subjective. But it’s a disservice to the story to say that Gojo is a static character.

@@pinkraven7043 Of course I'm anime only, this story has no substance that appeals to me. if he changes in the manga that's no business of mine, Red vs Blue also gets phenomenal later on but I still have to watch 6, seasons at least before that begins to happen. I'm not interested in a story that puts off that sort of thing for later on, while displaying numerous things and humour I don't like. I skipped the parts where Gojo gets stuck because he's embarrassed, sorry not sorry, I've seen the shtick so many damn times I don't have time to waste on it, especially because it's not funny. Because I'm an anime only you cannot pretend I have to judge a character by the manga, that's idiotic. Sometimes the anime contradicts (Classroom of the Elite), skips (Re:Zero, Fate/Stay Night) or dumbs down the adaptation (86, my god they butchered it) what's in the source, that's no fault of mine. I'm gonna judge Gojo by how I've seen him. As for his changes in the anime, he was so forgettable i only remember a few. Gojo is just the sort of person I hate in real life, so the only reason I watched until the end was to pass time, people whose issues are a matter of their perspective and limited experience + filling the gaps with anxiety, dread and imagination are something I'm done with both in life and anime. It would have been nice to see him get over his issues in the anime though. The tradition Vs modernity is featured scarcely in the anime, at least I don't recall that much. EDIT: Damn spell check EDIT2: I also wanto to point out that what you think of as bland is actually not what I think is bland, for the most part. What's bland to me is when I watch or read a story and it feels like I already read it, heard what it's talking about and the designs are also same-ey.

Most authors in the light novel industry, just makes character like any characters without actually understanding the rule, the exact "Wants vs Needs" in dress up darling, Gojo wants to be like his grandfather, to make beautiful dolls, but along the way he spends time with Marin he realized that he NEEDS someone to achieve his wants. Authors has different ways to execute this. In Pixar's Soul, Joe wants to perform Jazz and the time where he about to get what he wants, he dies, along at the ending, he gets what he wants but he realizes his needs, that he needs to spend his last years of life more carefully, he realizes that his wants is just an another job, and his wants are delusioned from his needs. Light Novel authors just writes because they saw an another Light Novel and gets inspired of it or just writes something immediately that pops out from their minds, they also mostly make characters by seeing how characters are in other stories, they only see and rewrite instead of actually understanding the character

Whats interesting is that while Gojo is not aggressively sexual, at the same time he *is* very attracted to Marin; meanwhile the story established her as being more assertive in her attraction to him, so this sets up for a reversal of traditional gender role expectatives in the development of their relationship (in a believable, healthy way I mean; not in a harem way of all the girls want to get it on with the MC for Reasons).

To me there’s complexity and beauty in his reservedness. He doesn’t feel like showing anything off or expressing much. He isn’t loud and outspoken. That’s okay. In terms of giorno, i often find a large part of his characterization that's ignored is his progression after the white album fight. giorno is noticeably very self sacrificial in fights, more so than other jojos. he's willing to put himself in incredible pain to beat the enemy, like when he made his own snake attack him in the man in the mirror fight, or severed his own arm on shattered window glass to get rid of B.I.G. a lot of gruesome and body horror shit happens in jojo's fights, that's to be expected, but these instances are noticeable to me because of how little he hesitates to put himself in said scenarios, or even die. And given how several members of the gang were also less than impressed with him (abbacchio is most obvious and memed, but narancia and fugo specifically were a tad hostile as well), it gives the impression he views himself and the world around him as very utilitarian, that he's willing to disregard his own wellbeing to gain these people's approval and make sure they all don't die. combined with the fact he grew up with abusive parents, it seems reasonable that he'd be detached from his own physical pain and hyperaware on how to placate other people. So in the white album fight, giorno's willing to sacrifice himself so mista can go on ahead and survive. but mista insists true victory is them ALL surviving, which gives him an epiphany. mista is also the member of the group (sans buccellati) who wasn't very skeptical or challenging or giorno so he's not someone who needs giorno to prove himself to him, making mista the perfect character to give him this revelation. and it's also when he learns how to use GE to heal others, which quite literally forces him to prioritize himself more. he's most useful alive and in one piece now. but he still definitely puts that emphasis on his self worth being determined by what he can do. he "heals" buccellati and then is devastated when he can't do the same for abbacchio. they even both suffer the same injury (the punch through the gut) and giorno tries to heal them in the same way. then, it turns out he didn't even succeed in healing buccellati AND THEN narancia dies in his own body. He can't save everyone, and in a twisted way, he sort of has to let the idea of physically sacrificing for others go, because it won't really matter in the end. along with fate and inevitability being a huge theme too. but at least he can honor buccellati's wishes and finish what they set out to do. all this stuff isn't super front and center, but it's there and fairly prevalent when you add everything up. anyways i think my takeaway on giorno is that he was someone who was scarily ready for the gangster world, and that should be very concerning for his mental wellbeing.
@Denbortomalla

I wont say I hate him, but compared to other JoJos, he's less interesting. His character doesnt go through much development compared to Buccellati and the gang. Also, in part 5, the leader is Buccellati, so he's kind of overshadowed by him.

Bland, is when the character just gets handed down all plot devices and resolutions in the name of convenience. Bland, is when the payoff, romance or otherwise can be seen a mile away. Bland, is when the protag does not have an inner voice to lend itself being introspective. Bland, as described like any food or drink being served, is tasteless/or lacking taste, overly hyped and characterized only as display fodder. Gojo's love for and making hina dolls is really an interesting subversion of otaku culture, his struggles to keep it a secret because of past trauma and/or fear of being ostracized as different from the norm is in of itself already a self-insert to most of us anime fans or 'you-name-it' geekdom there is. I’ll never understand how people think Gojo is bland. I also think it’s so under-valued how important he is to the core message of the show: “Everyone should be themselves and pursue their passions honestly, without the ridicule of others.” Obviously this is a message that resonates with otaku and anime fans. But importantly, Gojo isn’t an otaku. He has basically zero knowledge of that stuff. His passion for Hina Dolls is one that, as classically “feminine” as it is, is one that even the anime community, as sexist as it can be sometimes, might be prone to ridiculing. But the author then uses Marin to throw that urge right back into our faces. Who are you to judge Gojo’s love of Hina Dolls? Haven’t you been ridiculed for your love of anime? What makes you anime fans and Gojo any different? Asides from how important he is for the theming of the show, the fact is he has tons of identifiable positive traits. He’s unbelievably hard-working, generally open-minded and inquisitive, and is quite perceptive of the people around him. The fact that he’s not immediately sexually aggressive towards the first girl who becomes friends with him, even if she shows romantic interest in him, and that that gets him labelled as “bland” is a pretty sad commentary on how we all see gender.

I feel like the reason as to why people think he's bland is the community itself. This goes for both sexes but i noticed that anime girls get marketed a lot more than anime boys especially in the romance genre. For comparison i like Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie. They're a really cute couple with a great dynamic, both have their fanservice moments with each other, and you can clearly see why they both love each other. Despite that i never really see people talk about them as a couple, they just talk about shikimori. Same for anime like komi san, i hardly ever hear people talk about tadano other than saying he's a chad. Im not really in these fandoms but community wise, you can't really blame people from thinking that these characters are bland even if they aren't cuz the anime community is always focused on who's the 'best girl' of the season. edit: coming back to this a year later to say i dont think that how many figmas or body pillows dictates how well written a character is.

I really like gojo and do not think he is bland, however, I can understand why people have at this point gotten tired of mc’s that are entirely oblivious to the emotions of their other half just to continue the “will they won’t they” dynamic. This gets slightly more annoying with characters like Gojo or Tadano as they are shown to be acutely aware of the emotional state of those around them for everyone else. I think Horimiya is a great example of what happens when you drop that and just continue the story in a more natural manner where slight misunderstandings don’t contribute to more than a couple minutes of the show as the characters simply talk to each other. I will say tho that with gojo I find it slightly more endearing than many other protagonists as he has a backstory that contributes to his social awkwardness and puts much of what he does in perspective as it’s that of a more traditional Japanese mindset and of someone who is only seeing everything like this for the first time. These are all my thoughts, love the vids dude, you connect all the dumb anime stuff to real world concepts in a very concise way that is logically sound. To talk about Giorno for a second, I hate how the general consesus is just "oh well he dosent have the funny one liner like my favourite Jobro so he's inherently a weaker written protagonist." It sucks because Giorno is a really well thought out charachter, as he genuienly thinks about what he's gonna say next, and is often considering what his fellow friends need to push them to the next level. Stemming from his abuse as a child, Giorno became judged for being able to analyze his abusers and understand WHY they did the things they did, and as such, his abusive father and local bullies only got more angry since Giorno could see right through them. I get that some people dont like how he's not in the main spotlight for a lot of the story, but thats because Giorno dosent care about that, all he wants is to get rid of the drug trade terrorizing Naples, and starts inspiring Bruno and the rest of the gang to start standing for what they believe in.

@Err0_Will 2 года назад
Part of the issue, at least from what I see, is that Giorno has a mostly neutral expression, especially in the anime adaptation. In the Manga he starts out fairly expensive but gets more stoic over time which somewhat helps show his development over time but the Jojo Anime tends to base the characters off how they are at the end of their respective parts. Now this issue isn't unique to Giorno, all the parts have this issue but it stands out more with him and Jotaro to an extent. Star Platinum used to smile like a mad man whenever it was summoned but slowly got more stoic along with Jotaro, showing Jotaro gaining more control over his stand and changes in his personality.

The author is a woman writing about an ideal boyfriend. This isn't even subtext, there's a ton of focus on stuff like Gojou's hands being big, his caring personality, how gentle he is, etc. Marin's obviously idealized too, but she's idealized in a way where a female reader would want her confidence - obviously a male reader could see her as an ideal girlfriend, too, but a lot of the show is framed around Gojou being cute, flustered, caring, or all three. Compare this to an average harem isekai thing where the girls do fanservicey things and the guy gets a 2 second reaction shot before it spends minutes lingering on the girl's bodies. Marin's body is framed sexually, but mostly as setup for some kind of reaction or conversation.

A lot of the time, it feels like the people that throw these acusations are just mad that the character doesn't do what they would want to do and, therefore, don't let them self-insert. Gojo is a pretty cool guy. A hard working man. A good, loving friend. But some horny teenagers don't want that, but rather a guy that would look better on a 2000s harem anime. It's kinda sad, really

It’s so common that people take a look at the generic aspects of a MC and just ignore the complexities that those aspects can lead to, or even worse, completely ignore the more important parts of the MC’s characteristics. Giorno being cunning, good hearted, and goal oriented may seem bland to some. But that’s exactly what leads his team to victory, he uses his wits to give advice during battles. His heart of gold (pun intended) is what led him to victory, he showcased exactly why the boss lost in the final battle. And his goal oriented nature is the reason why it only took 7-8 days to kill the boss of Passione and end the drug trade. It’s often that people over look the more dark parts of Giorno’s personality. Giorno isn’t a villain, not by a long shot, but he’s not a goody two-shoes character either. He’s Dio’s son, and just like Dio he has really good charisma. He used that same charisma to convince Bruno to let him join Passione. Of course Giorno cares about his teammates (far more than Diavolo cared about anyone in his gang) he still, in a very small sense, did use them for personal gain. In the episode where Mista was in charge of investigating the stand user of Rolling Stones it’s revealed to us that yes, Bucellati’s gang doesn’t like how kids are being sold drugs but they never once said anything about wanting to rebel against the boss. He’s also let the mafia influence him in negative ways. While Giorno *doesn’t* do drugs, he commits theft, and more than once. Since you already covered Gojo and since I haven’t watched that much demon slayer I don’t have any points to make for Tanjiro, so imma just talk about Midoriya (BNHA). Admittedly, yes, Izuku seems INCREDIBLY mid, average, generic, or what ever title you’d want to give him. But that’s mainly because you’re not having enough patience nor paying that much attention. The reason why it feels like Izuku is average is because of his kindness, him being a push over, and his overly emotional personality. To most people rarely ever subverts expectations. But some of the things that most people seemingly don’t pay attention to, are the most important parts about Midoriya. His nerdy side allows him to pay close attention to someone’s strengths and weaknesses, not only does that give him insight on how he himself can improve but it also allows him to give constructive advice on how his classmates can Better use their quirks. Izuku uses his kindness to try and reason with people whenever possible or to motivate the people around him to keep going. Midoriya being emotional and crying all of the time isn’t just for the sake of being overly hysterical, he mainly cries because he’s grateful for what he has. Sure I’ll admit that the tears are over used but let’s be fair, Izuku really did get the short end of the stick in the first episode, so it makes sense (to a certain extent) that he’s overjoyed by the things that are given to him. Now, as for his other traits. Midoriya is very naive, observant, a relatively quick thinker, and sort of uncreative. His naivety causes him to do some pretty stupid things, like fall for Shinso’s trap during the sports festival or leap into action during villain encounter when he had no quirk. But that all makes sense because he is (as of writing this) still a teenager. His observation skills paired with his ability to think and act quickly causes him to make decisions that can really help out in the moment or nearly mess everything up, due to what I previously mentioned (his naivety). All in all, is Midoriya a bad MC? No, maybe boring to some but ultimately he’s a really good person. Is there anything wrong with being a good/ normal person, no, and honestly it’s a breath of fresh air to have a protagonist who isn’t some perverted opportunist (like every harem anime ever, or even the seven deadly sins) or a straight up brat like Naruto (Naruto was a good kid, but he definitely had a lot of moments where he was just annoying).

Seeing people attending colleges for the "school life" and not their studies is just a slap to many of us who seek knowledge & real passion in studying rather than indulging in whatever social life this world has to offer. It's unhealthy anyways and finding the right people to hang out with is even more of a challenge. Not as in identifying who's good or bad, but just finding a healthy friend in general.

Being bland shouldn't be just about whether the protagonist is midrange, shy or even black haired, it's more about how well the character is writen, how much thoughts his actions have behind. I do think that tanjiro is rather bland because his only character trait is being "the good guy". He has no internal strugles or such. His family died only to make us feel sad and connected with him in an attempt hide the lack of depth. I do understand you can still like the show for other reasons.

I don't think all characters should be labeled as bland. When watching shows like Demon Slayer, I simply felt as if Tanjiro was a STATIC character and not a bland protagonist. He doesn't undergo any huge character arcs as the story focuses more on him growing in experience. This is not a bad thing as I'd prefer a static character who mostly stands ground in their morals than have a character assassination after an important character plotline. Some stories are better simple and straight forward than overly complicated you know? Sorry Deku :(

I think its frustrating when Gojo clearly has feelings and desires for Marin, but repeatedly represses them. Its especially jarring when Marin clearly wants him. It feels like they only reason they aren't together is because the plot demands it rather than say a character reason. It can be justified by saying Gojo is a social recluse up until this point, but I just don't understand how that can still be an effective reason when they clearly spend a large amount of time with each other, outside of making cosplay and Marin is making real attempts to flirt with him, consistently.

Dress up darling is such a breath of fresh air in romance anime and harem anime genres. Both leads have unique enough personalities to not come of as stereotype romance or bland and have actual character progressions troughout the story. Also it is nice to see a a harem like show where the characters aren´t perverts and the girls aren´t constantly put in sexualising situations. The focus lies in the characters and the theme os cosplay. And mostly the more sexual, revealing scenes are tied to the cosplay stuff so at least they don´t feel random. Sometimes even used to characterise relationship/ Characters like the Gojo d.e. He is shown to have sexual interests without overstepping boundaries due to respect of the gril he likes.

I would like to also add that having the protagonist be active in choosing a love interest could risk alienating readers that prefer a different love interest and that this is a big reason why protagonists aren't often allowed to choose and commit. I don't know how true this is and I don't know how much merit this assumption has, biti do think it's why such things are at least not the first and most common choice for publishers. You do get the occasional manga where the protagonist does commit, but it isn't common for a reason.

The weebs that I've observed completely ignore what Gojo brings to the table, emotional maturity, passions/hobbies, all of the things you mentioned are willfully ignored by the weebs who project on Gojo and they think that they also deserve a Marin because Gojo "is just like them" when he clearly is not. It's not him, it's his unassuming appereance combined with his normal or "generic" personality and this ignorance of his actual qualities that results on weebs projecting on him and evying him for the wrong reasons that make people like me, who have no interest in watching "the show about the cosplay bimbo and her boring boyfriend" think of him as bland. OK, English is not my native language so stick with me. I don’t think sexual aggressiveness is the reason why people think Gojo is “Bland”, mostly because in general that’s the reaction that almost every anime character has on a “sexy scene”. Even character like Shirogane, Jellal, Hikki and Gray fullbuster which main traits are being cool headed, calm and serious have the same reaction towards women in similar scenarios, and none of this character are really categorize as “bland”. I think a big factor is the amount of time that they are on this “Loser” state since most of them have this reaction once every 50 characters however Gojo has this instances almost in every arc(I love Gojo but the author usually puts him on this situations).
