Hello! A decade ago Honda released an updated CBR1000RR Fireblade in base trim and for the first time there was a special SP version. MCN went big on testing both machines against the competition over two action-packed issues. We rode them in the South of France and on track at the Alcarras circuit in Spain with WSB champ Neil Hodgson. Check out the video to see which bikes won and look back on some tasty sports news, featuring Alex and Sam Lowes, Danny Kent, Leon Camier and Eugene Laverty.
00:00 - Intro
05:04 - Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade v BMW S1000RR v Yamaha R1 v Kawasaki ZX-10R v Suzuki GSX-R1000
13:10 - Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP v Ducati 1199 Panigale S v Aprilia RSV4R v BMW HP4

I still consider this era of superbike as still modern, yet it's ten years ago. How time flies.

Would be great to have a "second hand" used superbike test on bikes now under 10k with 10k or under milage to go along with them everyone picked their own steed and off you go, be good to see where they are at in present day & where they'd sit among the current gens. A test of time! Keep up the good work!

2000 to 2008 was the magic years, the world fell into recession in 2008 and bike development suffered massively after 2008, with most manufacturers doing very little from 2008, the fireblade went from 2008 to 2016 with very little development, the r1 from 2009 to 2015 was hardly developed, it took until around 2015 for the majority of manufacturers to finally put resources into development and by that time the electronics age was well and truly upon us.
@muscleandimports

@@djmorgan823 those were great years too. My favorites are the k6 gsxr 1000, k7 750, and '07 fireblade. Aside from that, we got the famed s1000rr in '09/'10 which has a reputation that rightfully precedes it. HP4 and HP4 race coming along after it. We got the panigale (and amazing corresponding superleggera) series from ducati. We got the supercharged H2. Some of the most notable favorites from the 2010s. And as you say, it took around 2015 for bigger and more mainstream developments to come along, which is right around the time of this video. I think we can agree then, that 2005-2020 has been the true golden age for motorcycles.

So pleased to see this vid pop-up. Last year I spotted a 2014 Fireblade (not the SP) in HRC colours with 3,500 miles on the clock and in excellent all round condition. I knew in my head that I shouldn't buy it, but my heart won-out a couple of weeks later. It's got way more power than I can handle and it's bloody uncomfortable on long rides, but I absolutely love it.

My dad's got an 1199 Tricolore and there's just something about that bike that makes me so much more excited than the Japanese counterparts. I love all bikes, the Blades, GSXR's, R1's, and ZX10R's are all amazing bikes, but the Tricolore is so much more emotional to be around

Sales may be down but superbikes are now better than ever. There is a bike for every possible use or personal taste and nearly all of today’s bikes have more tech and development than those of yesteryear. MCN, 44 Teeth and channels like yours are even more important than ever as you are able to quantify the development and cut thru the manufacture’s propaganda! Thank you!

I had red 2015 aprila rsv4 r aprc and it was amazing. (I wish they would go back to solid colors, I think all the new paint jobs are pretty ugly). Amazing engine and sound. When I took it on track I loved how planted it felt, and the way it seemed to hunker down to the asphalt on corner entry and mid corner. The only problem was corner exit. It was the lack of feel from the rear you got when gettin on the gas made me feel uneasy at times and the crude electronics didn’t do much to alleviate this. Last year I finally totaled it when I got on full throttle leaning too much thru a corner and chucked it off the track going 115mph (Spent a few nights in the hospital for 4 compression fractures in my spine). I still miss and love that bike as it was my first ever dream bike

I would love Suzuki to make a special limited edition gsxr 1000 that’s basically a k5 with the latest generation vvt engine in it. 200 hp, zero electronics, Brembo brake set up with no ABS an old school needle dash and a classic blue and white paint scheme. Just imagine what a boss bike that would be! It would obviously have to have a yoshi exhaust. Just take my money

Hello Michael, I remember that Route Napoleon test in MCN. Sadly there is nothing much in MCN these days for me and in fact after more than 30 years I've stopped buying MCN this year. I've had my "Adventure" bike time, rode my XT660R 44,000 miles around the world including the Trans America trail over 2 years away. Personally I don't think adventure bikes cut it on the roads of Europe, I'll stick with sports bikes and sports tourers for GT'ing it through Europe. Unfortunately MCN has no interest in riders like me anymore.

I don't think people would go wrong buying any bike featured here. Maybe why the new stuff sells slowly, with even 20 years old bikes not being that far off. Interested in the 660 Daytona when you get a go, especially with this much rumoured race kit Pete Hickman is working on. Reminds me of the TL1000R kit we could order through Suzuki at a price that if you had to ask etc.

just in time! i've been contemplating one of these for track duty since they've just about hit the desirable trough in price that makes them sort of affordable for me... 10 years old is the goldilocks zone for performance machines on the cheap imo... power figures had started seriously climbing and the fledgling euro rules and relatively simple electronics make them really appealing to me. that RSV4 is drool-worthy still... P.S. this is babyfknblu on a new moto-centric youtube account :)

The RSV-4 is a continuous improvement project for Aprilia despite changing their focus from WSBK to MotoGP. Like BMW they will happily supply different spec engines from the factory so that you can decide how much is enough. I still have my stock RSV-4 Factory APRC SE Max replica from 2011 and despite the later step up to 1100cc I'm happy with the c. 180bhp that the 1000cc provides. Chassis and suspension quality is very satisfactory, too. The roll-on sound is still epic. #BeARacer

We really appreciate you sharing your vast experience and knowledge, you're a real treasure to the riding community! Question for ya - What are your thoughts on a modern street bike like an RS660 vs a superbike from this test? I ride an 1199S Tricolore on twisty roads and mostly in wet mode (120hp), it's damn good fun, but I wouldn't mind modern electronics and those Aprilias sure sing a beautiful song don't they?
@lonpfrb
@lonpfrb 4 месяца назад
Since you're already in da family, I think that can be arranged [feeble Godfather film reference]. RSV-4 is quite comparable to that era Ducati being a performance continuous improvement project i.e. better every year in small ways. The 1100cc RSV-4 should be easy after the 199S. Service availability is key so I recommend AP Workshops or Bikers World as the top shops. However I'm having fun on an RSV-4 Factory (1000cc). Sound-track is epic. You will already be used to the tyre wear and riding position challenges.. Have fun!

I love the things, especially the 90s era! 😎 It wouldn't surprise me if in the future we just see special editions/ SP models of superbikes just built for homologation purposes for superbike racing. Priced well out of the pocket to the average man/woman. I hope I'm wrong 🙏🏻 Question, have you or MCN ever got hands on one of those Aprilia RSV4 x-trenta's to test? If 750 / litre bikes are to remain a realistic aspiration for the younger (less than middle aged me) generations and hence a financially viable market segment in volume terms for manufacturers, then the latter must produce simpler, less highly strung machines that can be priced accordingly. Failing that there are many good, perfectly serviceable used examples that can be had for good money. It would be interesting to see the sales volumes and prices achieved for new and used sportsbikes especially in light of recent interest rate changes as cheap credit and PCP are two critical factors without which the massive surge in prices over the last 10 years would not have been possible.

Neevesy Sir, *tips hat*. I have a tyre question. Not being allowed to ride a bike when I was growing up because my mum would have kicked me out l, I got into cars. Uno's, 5's, 205's. Why is it that car tyres front and back when rotating forward have the same rain dispersion, but motorbikes don't always. The rear runs from centre outwards as it hits the tarmac to move the water. But the fronts often do the opposite and run outside to inside. How comes?
@NudaMan
@NudaMan 4 месяца назад
Different grooves in the tires, front usually just sends the water under the bike while the rear wheel splits the water to opposite sides vs straight down the middle, you’d hydroplane badly if the water went straight down the middle like a car tire lol
@somatyk
@somatyk 4 месяца назад
@@NudaMan Thanks. But this is exactly what I don't understand. You've explained the rear dispersal angle of the tread to throw water out away from the centre of the tire to prevent aquaplaning. Which I understand. So why is the front often the opposite? Road 5's for an example. You say it's to throw water under the bike. But drawing fluid into the centre of the tyre surely promotes aquaplaning at the point of contact? It seems to me at least, anathema to what a tread is supposed to do. I thought it might be to do with the way the rubber moves water when on the side of the tyre.

Nice, thank you. A few remarks... 14K versus 20K in price is a huge difference, to me far too much to compare them. And a serious question: if you need all these electronics to be able to ride a bike safely, does it not simply have too much power for the road? My bikes are over 20 years old and I have no plans to move to later models. The most advanced for me is ABS and heated grips. So I cannot answer this question. But I do wonder about it.
@lonpfrb
@lonpfrb 4 месяца назад
Electronics are susceptible to economies of scale so halo model positioning is probably a greater reason for the increases. Research and Development costs suggest trickle down to lesser models with less reason in bhp or Nm for Modes or TC. The fundamental rationale is corporate risk. Meaning that the risk of class action cases against the makers of dangerous products are a thing, and engineers can do more than legal or marketing will let them. 220 bhp without TC in gears 1 - 3 is a recipe for hazard and so reducing the number of possible sales for 'that frightening machine' - think 2-stroke 500 GP bikes. So the electronics enable power increase at acceptable risk to the manufacturer. Data logging for the track too (R1M). ABS seems like a nod to safety and virtue signalling by the manufacturers more than a practical benefit for road riders but I stand to be corrected on that one. They're certainly a nuisance for track riding where they can't be switched off and add weight and tube complexity. Most track bikes delete them. Heated grips are practical.. So does it not simply have too much power for the road? No, the throttle goes both ways, always has done. With modern electronics and data logging you can see that the fly-by-wire and ECU/IMU will decide how much power is reasonable despite what you ask for. Literally Throttle Position (Ask) and Throttle (Given) so that you can see the differences and also traction or slide control interventions. Yamaha R1M does all that out of the box. Others are available...
@carsyoungtimerfreak1149
@carsyoungtimerfreak1149 4 месяца назад
@@lonpfrb I understand all of that. But you miss my point. In today's society and in today's traffic it is no longer 'mine is bigger than yours'. This is not about what is technically possible, if we want to be able to continue riding motorbikes we have to realize the world, as always, changes. More and more people are getting supported by their council/government to ban bikes. Because of noise, anti social riding habbits. This ban will start with 1 or 2 roads, yet if we do not change our behavior the ban will move to areas and who knows what will be next. If you want to ride insanely fast, fine - go to the track. Based on that, my, conviction: 100 bhp is more than enough for a big road bike. Bar a few EVs you will be faster than anything else on the road!
