When you’re gathering up all the cord at the end is that check for miss fires, being eco and disposal in a special way, sum explosive handling requirement or can you sum how reuse sum of it
I'm recovering all of the plastic signal tube, not just for eco reasons but the surface delay clips have "Danger Explosive" written on them and this has cased some problems when they are found lying around on a job site by pesky neighbors who were always apposed to the site development. The neighbor calls the police, pretending that they have found explosives lying around on a construction site, seeing this find as a vindictive way to cause problems for the developer and blaster. At first glance anybody who picks up a used surface delay clip can determine that it has already gone bang and thus is not going to do it a second time - no need to trigger a big turn out of multiple emergency services, bomb squad, Work Safe Vic etc. No, none of this stuff is reusable other that the plastic signal tube that you can use in a line trimmer or whipper snipper.
Merry Christmas Dave and thank you, as usual your videos never fail to entertain, I have only ever done single shot blasting, in a future video could you explain a little more how you wire your shots?
Great Video Dave, What was that thing the flew by in the 2nd to the last shot? Looked like a huge butterfly! Hope you have a great Holidays with family and another year is almost in the books!!
Nice work again Dave - new overalls I see! That goo is amazing how it doesn't exude out of the hole as it cures - obviously it has excellent grab strength inside the hole. Merry Christmas :)
What happens if one of the witness tubes fails to fire? Do you have to uncover it and make it safe or is there a way to detonate it with a secondary explosive?
You grab the spade, dig up the fault and reconnect in and fire the remainder of the shot. thankfully this does not happen very often, can be a lot of spade work.
The customer was very concerned about the effect of blast vibrations at neighboring properties, my blast was 2mm/s some distance away from the homes - probably less than 1mm/s at homes. The legal limit is 10mm/s
I was wondering what you were doing with the tubes. Witness tubes! Bloody genius. We did covered shots in quarries but never saw this method being done. Cheers for the knowledge.
I can't claim this as an original idea, it was a senior Irishman that taught me to do this (and many other things)I have no doubt that he thought of it. Well worth the effort, has shown up missfires to me several times, and when you use the control row and echelon hook up method you can tell where the point of failure is by looking at which tubes have not fired, grab a spade (uhhhh) dig it up and fix it and fire the rest of the shot.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast oh that’s epic. I hope to be as good as you and your teacher some day. Nice to hear a fellow Irish man had such an idea. I do check them when we do overburden blasting in the coal mines alright. Obviously because they’re much more visible. What a cracker of an idea. Love it.
Hey Dave, Great video, thanks for sharing. Ruthie and I want to wish you and your Family a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I look forward to your adventure into next year.
If they're worried about vibration, just let them watch the clip at 20:23 over a free granola bar. It's even got butterflies! I hope you get a little break over the holidays and are able to stay cool and dry.
T. Y FOR THE 'PRODUCTION'! At 15:11 that's whay we call ''using all the tools in your tool boxx''. Here's a viral idea, do a non-stop exploding rock'' compilation for 2023.
Had to use the expanding chemical on the rocks out front because this is government land and we would need their approval to blast and this can take some time.
I have to collect all of the spent signal tube and surface delay clips as it is not good when a kid finds one and takes it to school for show and tell!
Christmas in summer , What fun !! Nice blend of cracking agent and HE on this job. Lots of heavy equipment available on site but I've never seen blast mats used over earth cover, Not used in AU or just too much bother ?
How much... not very much, crack normally open up to about 10 - 12mm. How long, depends on how hard the rock is and ground temperature. 2 hours - 2 days.
Dose any one try to pull the wool over your eyes by saying that your blasting has put cracks in their walls or driveways. Now that question is out the way have a good and safe Christmas with your family and friends and look forward to your videos next year.
They do from time to time Tim, this was a more common occurrence before, when I only worked with blast mats and not soil cover. This was because blast mats allow a lot of noise and over-pressure to escape - this rattles windows and frightens people.
If I have my physics correct. The goo cures super quick and very hard in the presence of air, creating the cork. Then the rest gradually goes off over the next day or two.
Yeah, it is pretty cool... what is not cool though is that for it to produce a measurement that is legal evidence, it needs to be calibrated every year - at great cost!
@demolitiondavedrillandblast bugger. It's like insurance I guess. But, of course and as you know, it could save you thousands and protect you from some dodgy character trying to blame you for something you never did.
Dear Dave... Thing seem slow for work and oideos , I hope you and yours are doing O.K. I have no idea if you can transport blasting supplies by air, especially things that go boom... If you hunt for work well out of your area but no body wants to drive far .. May a private bush plane could transport. and that would help a lot. . o drive really far. f f your area by computer
Merry Christmas Dave! Does my eyes deceive me or did you manage to flip the bottom of your red drill around?? Keeping the release accessible when drilling against a wall??
Lol that thumbnail pic. Took me a moment to realize those are blasting connections laying atop the stone. From a distance, looked like the bin in the back room of a gentleman's club.
The customer was very concerned about the effect of blast vibrations at neighboring properties, my blast was 2mm/s some distance away from the homes - probably less than 1mm/s at homes. The legal limit is 10mm/s
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast aaah makes sense, do you happen to know when to expect damage to things? Is the 10mm/s legal limit leaving a good safety margin or can you expect damage if you go just sligtly above that?
Dave, how long does it take for you to drill a 6ft hole (1.5") with the hydraulic drill. Also how often do you have to replace a bit? I'm still chipping away at the little garden project you helped me with. Did an initial pour with the expansive grout (Dexpan) before it got too cold here and it honestly blew my mind . I had low expectations and could only get in about 5 proper holes with (1.5" down to 2 feet) with the corded Bosch but after 48 hours it ripped the @rse out of the boulder. Really impressive and the plan is to go back in and do about 9 more 2 ft holes in the Spring. Love the latest video. Thanks for sharing!
Hi LOTM, great to hear the the Dexpan did the job for you! The drill that I'm using in this video will drill a 6ft. hole in about 10 min and the drill heads are good for about ~40 - 50m
Great video Dave! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and the family.... wishing you the best...... and on a side note saw you throwing a leg up on the drill and couldn't help but remember the video where you put the bionic leg sound to it 😂. I think of that all the time when I'm drilling....i try to the throw the leg up, u want quite there yet... and i think to myself... Dave could have done it 😂... Cheers to healthy, happy, and prosperous new year! 🍻
I have a heap of blast mats Denis, but I need to bring them to the job on a truck which costs money, the soil is already there and I can do much bigger shots than I would if I only used blast mats. The soil also gives a higher level of protection and cuts the noise down drastically where the mats do little for the noise. The blast noise brings complaints and spectators that I don't need. Another bonus of using soil is that I no longer spend my weekends repairing blast mats.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast that makes sense i am use to blow up the quarry and some train tunnels for biger loads on the trains i had one job that i need the matts for
After decades of designing PCB's whenever I hear mil used to describe a dimension, I think people are talking about 0.001", but then I realize it's millimeters. 😀 I am continually amazed at the speed of the explosion inside of detcord, what an amazing invention.
Thanks for including the conversion to standard haha Canada might be officially on metric but we generally speak standard when it comes to measuring certain types of distance
Hi Dave from Canada, question for you I noticed you collecting up the spent blasting wire. Are you melting it down yourself for the copper content ? Enjoy your videos, many years ago worked in a stone quarry where we removed slab granite for walkways, building and other uses.
No, no, this is not wire but plastic signal tube, it has a very thin deposition of bang stuff inside that transmits a shock wave along the tube and down the hole to the dets. Can get good money for this stone when you find the right people.
Things have changed since I was in the quarry, 50 years ago. We used stick dynamite {TNT} and a electric detonator fuse connected by copper wire to make the big bang ,
For the mic idea, a lapel mic as you could put on your lovely interloper could probably be put into a piece of close-fitting metal tube. Bondo the tube to the rock, get your audio and the mic back.
Hey, thanks, all this stuff is single take unscripted material, usually I just hit the go button and start jabbering without much forethought... this way I am just as surprised as you.
The excavator is hammering, which is of limited use on this type of rock, I started out using the cracking compound because the customer was very shy about blasting... but I talked them around.
digger operators down there don't seem to like rock buckets too much! it seems that some of those smaller ones they could have just shifted the run over a meter or so and went around some of the rocks! hey Dave ever use any the high drive dynamite? (the 70%-80% stuff that's what they call it up here) that stuff is wild Harley had a trench job but no rock to move and got some we set the charges (just 3 stick charges no connections) got back and he handed me his 7mm Mauser and said shoot the first charge! one shot they all went off!
Hi Keith, we no longer have any NG products in Australia. When we did the standard product was 60%, there was also 75% and a product called ANDG95 that was 95%! The emulsion product that we use now is supposed to be equivalent to the 60% but probably more like 50%. It is very insensitive, I have been told that nothing less than 22-250 impact will set it off.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast i was actually refering to after the shot, you were down in the hole as the excavator was clearing the rubble... around the 22 minute mark ... I don't normally see you doing that much Inspection after the shot
