In this video, I show you how to fix a common problem with the blower door actuator on a 2010 Ford F-150 XLT. Here is the part that I installed into the truck. amzn.to/2f0Vgue
2003- 2008 Blend Door Actuator Ford F-150
amzn.to/2oVwtNh
2009- 2014 Blend Door Actuator Ford F-150 (THIS IS THE MODEL I USED)
amzn.to/2f0Vgue
2015- Present
amzn.to/2qvKL4s
Dashboard Plastic Remover Tool:
amzn.to/2pVlmUE
Standard Craftsman Socket Set I Use:
amzn.to/2z6UHo6
Metric Craftsman Socket Set I Use:
amzn.to/2Dh4pr5
Note: Make sure this fits within your model. I know its hard to find the parts sometimes, so I hope you use these links above as a guide to finding your actuator.
This F-150 would only blow cold air because the actuator for the blower door went out. Before I went this far to replace the part I started a few diagnoses: tested the air conditioner, went under the hood to see if the heater core hoses were hot, and check the internet if this was a common issue. Sure enough, every test lead to a faulty actuator.
The hardest part was jamming my hand through the glove box. In order to get to the 5/16in screw on the bottom, I had to go through the glove box while my left hand was in the dash to help assist. Once I got the screw out it was fairly simple.
Installing the new unit took a little bit of wiggling in there because the actuator and door need to be lined up. It can only fit one way. The gear is keyed for this reason. Once installed, connect the power cord, install the two screws that hold the unit down, and put the dash all back together.
This process took about 45 minutes to complete. After the install I was able to change from hot to cold with ease.

Hi. Thanks for the video. My '09 F150 has the same issue. Stuck in cold air. Did you needed to pull any fuses or set the temp selector to various settings for a few seconds for the system to 'learn' the settings again?

To save time on the hidden rear screw I was able to remove the first then lift and rotate the old actuator to the left. It exposed the back screw for fast access.

Good video and helped me replace the actuator in my 2010 Ford F-150 XLT. I would add that you need small hands to get in through glove box and on top of actuator. Also, tie string to your small wrench and back screw to keep it from losing it. Price of the part runs between $22-$3

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It really helped me figure out how to get in there to get this cursed beast out of my vehicle and restore the heat. Just a helpful FYI for those who are still attempting this, the wiring harness in the glovebox needs to be popped out of place and moved down so that you can really fit your hand where it needs to go. And the tool that you'll likely need to fit in there is a simple small 5/16 box-ended wrench. (A ratcheting one would be best)

Just finished installing the actuator and I am happy to say, WE HAVE HEAT! One thing slowed the process, the gears didn't line up so contrary to the advice given to me at the Ford dealership, I did NOT "Stick a screwdriver in and force the gear to move". Just plug in the new actuator and turn the heat/ac knob until the gears line up. Easy fix. Thank you so much for posting this video!

Just a tip, if it hasn’t been mentioned yet. To line the keys up on the Actuator; all you have to do is turn on the truck and slowly adjust the hot/cold knob until it pops into place. Make sure you have the blend door plugged in. And as for the radio console, all I unplugged was the upper plug and the plug on the right upper side. I left all the plugs on the bottom like the video. So to recap, get the blend door in the right orientation, then adjust the knob so it matches the key on actuator

there are some clips offer some tricks on how put the new one in: just use (cut) the bad actuator gear tip, slid gear tip in , and twist to the desirable position for the new one to be in.
@rdzed3505
@rdzed3505 2 года назад
I was going to point that out. All you need to do is open up the old actuator, pop the old gear out and use it for alignment. No need to cut anything and it gives you a BIG gear to hunker down on for alignment. Cheers.

Couple of things to add to this video since I just finished the job on my 2010 F150. I don't think you needed to take off the bottom four bolts. I removed my radio some time back and did not remember doing that so I skipped that step and it still came out fine. I am glad you mentioned the part needing to be aligned before it goes back in. What I did was plug it in, turn on the ignition and AC and moved the temp selector switch until the gear on the new part was in the same position as the one I removed. Then it went in pretty easy. Well easier anyway - nothing about this small job is easy. Like you mentioned the hardest part is getting at that back bolt. Especially with my gorilla size hands. I ended up using a six point boxed end wrench which worked okay for getting it out, but I could not get it back in and lost it trying. So I just left it out all together and it seemed to be plenty tight with just the front bolt - I hope so anyway. Very helpful video.

Would it help with getting the correct shaft position to compare the old and new actuators before you install the new actuator. If not the same then manually move the new actuator to the same position as the old one. Then you should be able to align it to the correct position easier. At least you'd be starting closer to where you need it to be.

I've recently had an issue where the heater in my 2014 F-150 will intermittently stop blowing heated air. It'll be working fine and then all of a sudden you can feel the air coming out of the vents start getting cooler and cooler. If I fiddle with it a bit, or turn the control panel off and back on it seems to start working again. Is this video the fix for this issue? I didn't see anywhere what the symptoms are for needing this repair, so I thought I'd ask.

I was told by someone that my blend door is the reason my heater isn't blowing hot and defrost is completely cold. Top radiator hose is about 40⁰ hotter than the bottom hose. Flushed the radiator, new coolant, new radiator cap, new thermostat. Would this have anything to do with the blend door actuator?

What was the truck doing that you changed out this particular actuator? Was it blowing heat on the passenger side? Was it clicking?

My husbands truck blows cool air then all of a sudden it gets warm then goes back to cool air. No shift in temperature settings it does it all on its own. Will this fix that problem?? Let me add the air feels cool not cold. We added freon and it helped a little but the air keeps going back and forth from cool to warm.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I have a problem with blend door actuator in my 2011 ford mondeo mk4.5 dual zone control, it's noisy and stuck in the middle between cold and hot air. The question is should I remove the whole dashboard or just remove the center console to reach the dead part? Hope that you giude me to the right direction.

Mohammad Mustafa you are welcome. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I would recommend taking out as little as possible. That will help prevent you from breaking or loosening your dashboard as much as possible. Because it does not always snap back in perfectly the second time. At the end of the day it's up to you but I would stick to less is more in this case.

Great question! Yes, only on the part that is attached to the truck. You can not move the actuator. I was able to get both somewhat lined up in order to have the actuator slide in. Then, I move the actuator to line up the holes.

Just a tip for everyone else what I did was look at and mark the location of the arm on the old one I removed and then plug in the new one and rotate it with the hot/cold control until it matched. Then I installed it easily

It is hard to tell where and what the clicking noise is in your truck. Take a look at this video and listen to your car to see if it is in a similar location. If it is, then it may be the actuator. This actuator made some weird grinding and droning noises before it went out. Hope this helps! Good luck

When reaching in through the access above the Glove box, I wiggled the wire loom loose from the grommets holding it to the steel frame( 1 1/4" thick bunch of wires) that was making it hard to get my hand up there to remove the 8mm screw on the actuator. Once the wire loom was loose and hung down I was able to get to the hex head screw much easier.

I have a 2013 F150 Eco Boost that will only stay very hot until i bring the cold knob almost completely to the left side. Is there a difference between the blower door actuator and the Blender? WIth this occruing do you believe its the blower door actuator>
@92813justin
@92813justin 7 лет назад
The blower door actuator and blender door are two different words that describe the same thing. Have you tried your issue with the air conditioner on? I would try that to see if it is moving smoothly. Make sure to listen for the actuator when you are changing the temperature. If it skips really fast right when you move it to the far cold side that may be your issue. If that is not the case, something may be wrong with the cooling system.

@92813justin

The fuse chart may have something like blower, temperature control, more most likely climate control. I would check all of the fuses that are in the vesinity of climate control. If everything looks good, it maybe the actuator. Good luck!

Great video. My question is, if I can change the climate control to different parts(defrost, legs/defrost, whole cabin) and it cycles to each different section, is the blend door my issue? That part changes the blower door to run to the different areas of the truck? I have no heat @22° but blower blows cold air fine. Temp is right where it should be. Thanks
@92813justin
@92813justin 4 года назад
The blend door actuator changes the temperature of your cabin. There is a different actitud that changes where it is blowing. If it’s stuck at one temperature it’s most likely the blend door actuator (unless you’re heater core isn’t working). But with these f-150 it is typically the blend door
@petertimpson9378

Your video helped me a lot. I had it all changed in less than hour. And that bolt in the back wasn't hard to get out. I couldn't find my 8mm wrench but a 5/16 worked fine. had a harder time getting the connector out. The only problem I had was the radio didn't work when I was done. Took everything apart . Still didn't work. Checked a You Tube video and called a friend. I had to unhook the battery for 10 minutes to reset it. And it was fine. But the actuator wasn't a bad job at all. Thanks for the video.

Great video, I think this is the issue on my truck is.. but I wanted to give my conditions and see if you agree: The heater and a/c both seem to be working fine in regards to temperature, however when I change the climate setting to blow 'face only', it triggers a loud clicking noise. However as soon as I change the climate setting to anything else other than 'face only' (defrost, or face and feet) the clicking stops. Do you have any insight to what this particular issue is? Any feedback is much appreciated.
@92813justin
@92813justin 4 года назад
Trevor Nolan if you can feel warm and cold air this is not your issue. The blend door actuator “blends” the warm and cold air to your preferred temperature.

Does it sound like the blower is making a clicking noise? When you change the speed of the blower does it change?
@mikeandlilasharp2801
@mikeandlilasharp2801 6 лет назад
Yes, it's very subtle but you can hear the gears moving in the motor. Changing the blower speed, temperature, turning the ignition on/off AND opening doors will cause the clicking noise. After hearing that there are three motors I want to make sure I replace the correct one. Thanks.

Thanks a ton for your step-by-step instructional video. But yes I agree I would have loved to hear the audio with you swearing trying to get everything apart and back together lol. I've had this part fixed before at a shop. Think it was almost 300 bucks before. and I came to find that they never even got the bolt tightened all the way back down it was in about half way and was just left which helped me out a ton. When I used the link to order the part off of Amazon for my 2010 F150 I replaced it and I did not even bother putting the back screw back in. I just tightened down the front one and it kind a slides over a bit of a post on the back right hand side and that's just gonna have to be good enough for now. I fought to even get my hands and fingers back there enough to turn that bolt out with just my fingers because that's pretty much what somebody else did putting it back in.
