Welcome to another tutorial series. I'm working on an indie game and I wanted to share my progress and explain the tools and techniques I use at the same time. This week, I'll go over how to use Blender to do low resolution hard surface game asset modeling and UV unwrapping.

Use J key if having problems using knife tool between vertex

for people using the dissolve edge loops turning it into a triangle do limited dissolve that should fix your problem

You can also just hit c with the knife tool to snap along 45 degree incremental angles, instead of modifying the vertices afterward.

great tutorial. As a beginner in game design this was great information. Subscribed. Would be great to see something like this for a more organic structure, such as a character or wildlife asset.

Your asset modelling tutorials are excellent. Your voice is very easy to listen to and you explain everything clearly. Would be great if you could model more game assets! Or have you got another place you have tutorials such as Udemy?

Thank you! I'm glad you like them. Funny you should mention other tutorial sites like Udemy. I've actually got an announcement regarding that that I'll hopefully be able to post sometime next week.

At 3:19 when dissolving it doesn't work anymore, so a workaround is to actually delete the edges, then select the vertices in each square that has been deleted and press F to fill them

For some reason when I dissolve my corner diagonal lines as in ~3:24 my corner vertices also are removed, does anyone know what is going on?

Figured it out - there was an option in the modifier called Dissolve Verts, should be off.

Not sure how you did it, could not find Dissolve vertices off, but I used the "Limited Dissolve" in the delete menu (X key) or remove, delete, Limited Dissolve under 'mesh tools' if enabled.

Am using Blender 2.78, dissolving edge loops behaves differently know, it cuts the faces diagonally instead of remaining intact. Anyone have a solution?

Just figured it out, use Limited Dissolve instead of Dissolve Edges

0:45 You should have cut down the middle and made 2 quads rather than 1 quad and 2 tri's.

It would not have changed anything, because you always have to think in triangles (one square is two triangles). This is because computers need a surface that always works and with which you have to create everything. So a triangle is the best choice, because with a triangle you can put the vertices anywhere in the room and you can span a surface. This is not possible with a square. A triangle is a surface where the fewest edges are used. This means that you can create all other surfaces with it (try to construct a triangle with a square).
