I think the worst part of this episode was when you realize Grand-Pear knows the kids' names, so he must have been in communication with either his daughter or Granny Smith. And if it was with his daughter, he probably wasn't writing back. And the letters would have come like clockwork, until one day, they just stopped...
I really REALLY like how the MLP staff went went a positive spin on the parents. I know it's cliche, but that only makes their passing sadder, since they were extremely likable characters with the best romantic chemistry we've seen to date.

This was one of those episodes where I actually forget its a children's show. And when I do remember, it just makes me happy how seriously the show creators are when it comes to the viewers. 10/10, solid episode!
Blank, did you notice how Buttercup and Pinkie have similarities? (Baking, fluffy hair, blue eyes) Think maybe she's related to the Pear family, and in turn, related to the Apples through Buttercup?
This has to be one of the best mlp episodes we have seen so far just the way it channels emotions and the show chose to show the apple parents how people remembered them not by how they passed. Definitely in my top 10. I cried so much... and I'm not even ashamed... Fantastic
2 years later and I just found this comment. The healthiest way to grieve (in my own experience) is to remember someone by how they lived. That's what my grief counselor told me back in the day, at least.
The song's a lot less cheesy if you're thinking about the fact that the two are dead now throughout... or if you do that through the entire episode... I still feel the tears now.
That ending with the seeds they planted on their marriage becoming intertwining trees was beautiful. This entire episode was so well written and amazing to watch
This episode hit me hard because I'm in the same situation youre in blank, of having your father die and having to watch this knowing that hes gone. My father passing away brought me to the ponies a couple of years after when I was depressed and missing him very much. after being a brony since the start of season 5, Ive made art of my fathers oc that I made for him as a memorial for him and every time I show them the art, I tell them his story of how he outlasted his cancer by 10 years. May god bless you and your family and I'm sorry for your loss. but I know theyre both up there smiling down at us at how proud they are of their sons. Episode 14 reaction will definitely be delayed for a while after release. I'm currently in a weird transition between leases - I moved my things out of my previous apartment into storage, now I'm back home for the week. I'll be making the trip to Bronycon come Thursday, then staying at a friend's place after the convention for a few days, and then I can actually move to my new place just before the semester starts. So I'm not sure how the channel schedule's gonna look for a little bit. I meant eidetic memory.
This was a beautiful episode. I'm so friggin happy that they didn't mess this up. I was afraid that they'd sugar coat it, and say that they were just away. Which would dodge everything that we were led to believe at this point. And that would have dodged the potentially awesome gem of an episode that we have here. Damn this was beautiful. God, everytime I come back to this episode it just makes me cry during the song. It just reminds me of my mom and dad, they were perfect for eachother when they were young (my dad was in a band, he could of had any girl, and my mom could of been with any other dude that flirted with her, but they were loyal to each other until the end). My dad would write songs for her and leave voicemails for her everyday (which my mom still has and occasionally listens to them). My dad died last year and recently my mom found old pictures of themselves and it was just so bittersweet. Although they had trouble being together towards the end, they still loved eachother very much. They were best friends no matter what.
This is the greatest episode of mlp for all of time. Nothing will ever surpass this episode. It told us who the apple parents are. What brought them together and the struggle they went through. It was like Romeo and Juliet except no suicide 10/10 best episode of all time. Can't wait for Sober RarityDash to react to the episode. And cry.

No matter how many times I see this episode, it always make me cry, I've waited this kind of episode for forever and it's just so beautiful and emotional Pear Butter and Bright Mac's story is beautiful and shows us that love will find a way, no matter what
The saddest part for me was the part where the last memory of his daughter was making her cry and one of the reasons is because well.. I can in a way relate this will sound bad but in my past I was a extreamly selfish kid and I had gone to see my grandpa at the hospital with my mom and I can remember leaving that hospital with wanting him gone so I could have my mom to myself. I really regret that because that was the last time I saw my grandpa before he died. I would like to finish this comment with this message: Never take the people in your life for granted you may wish them gone and argue with them but when they really are gone you'll wish you could tell them you were sorry.
I feel like it's understated how much of an impact on the episodes quality the decision to change the credits song was, it maintains the tone and makes the episode feel like its own special event.
I can't thank you enough for this commentary. It was actually the first time I got to watch the episode, and... I'm feeling worse and worse that I HAVEN'T been properly catching up on this season. I lost my dad 21 years ago now (does time really fly that fast?), and have only recently been learning even more about his life that I never knew. It's good and bad, but it's all colored by what I remember, and by the fact that, since then, family has meant MORE than the world to me. I most definitely empathize with the Apples, and I empathize with you. Thank you, thank you SO much, for everything you do.
I cried more in this reaction video than I did in the actual episode. Such a lovely, heart warming and tear jerking episode. Definitely deserves more than a 9.5 on IMDB. Don't care how many times I watch it, I cry every time. The Perfect Pear indeed. 😌
The apple familly really speaks to me because I never really had parents. Their not dead or anything but both of them used to work for the army, and my mother is in a bad place at the moment. Ever since I was a babay I have been raised from my grand-parents and even to this day, and for the rest of my life ( Unless the die of old age before I can become an adult... Or they die in another way ) I will be raised by them. I'm content with living with them but nit many people can relate to being raised by grand parents, so the Apple Family really speaks to me ^-^
I know this is old but damn, watching this episode and hearing just how much you miss your Dad really hit hard for me. Like, my God I'm a sobbing mess every time I watch this. It just feels so real and bittersweet, both what I can tell from your story and the episode. Both of my parents are still around, which I guess I should feel lucky for, but with the way they've treated me, I've come to realize they aren't the greatest "parents". I wish I had someone like Buttercup or Bright Mac to raise me, maybe I'd be a better person than I am today if I had someone like them. Lots of love dude 💕
Well the oranges are AJ's aunt and uncle, so I'm guessing they're from Granny Smith's husband's side. I'm also guessing Granny Smith is a widow since we don't see Bright Mac's dad around.
I love how they were able to imply that their parents are actually dead, without directly saying that they died. There is no way they can’t be dead, the way everyone talked about them is exactly how people talk about loved ones who have passed away.
The whole episode is bittersweet. You fall in love with the characters but you then remember that they are gone. I truly feel for those who lost a parent/child.
The thing that really hits you with this episode is the things unsaid, "I was just so angry..........but I never......." "I can't believe I let a silly feud....keep me from my family."
Oh, wow. Dude, I'm so sorry about what happened with your father. I'm incredibly lucky to still have my mother around; she's not... the wellest person, but she's incredibly strong and I don't know what I'd do without her. Sorry, just, you mentioning that just made me think, so yeah... This episode was amazing, and written in an amazing way, literally the best way it could have been written. If anything, not saying what happened after only made the story stronger, because they're remembering their parent's lives, not what came next.

That Top 10 list at the end didn't have Twilight and Fluttershy. Oh wait, maybe I'm the only one who thinks their every interaction is romantic. My bad. Jasmine Leaves is a cute character.
Here's my theory: Maybe pear butter died after giving birth to Apple bloom and bright Mac got depressed and committed suicide Of course, the writers won't say anything because this is a kid's cartoon
My theory is similar- the way I have it is that Bright Mac died sometime while Pear was pregnant with Apple Bloom, and then she died giving birth because of that.
Before watching your reaction, I didn't really think about Grand Pear leaving meaning that he'd never see his daughter again. Fresh tears were had at that thought.
This episode really got me bc I lost two family members within two years (my sister and great grandmother) and hearing stories really makes me feel closer and like they’re here watching over me. This episode so so so good, man.
I can’t believe I skipped this one. The part where Grand Pear stormed off and that was the last time he saw his daughter had me in tears. I’m 16, but my relationship with my father has been pretty turbulent over the past year, through CPS matters, homophobia, and daily annoyances. The idea of any of those situations being the last time I saw my father or vice-versa is absolutely devastating to me.
Been two months or so since this first aired, and seeing it again brought the feels back just as strongly. Teared up right along with ya. I'm so glad to see that after seven seasons, they're still creating the kind of emotion-filled work that made us fall in love in the first place. Looking forward to seeing you in a week, man.
got to say, watching your commentary of this was my second watch of this episode and it still gave me the feels. Like you, one of the only real things I heard about this season was that we would learn more about AJ's parents and I was hoping they would do this episode right, and they really did do it justice. I didn't even notice it was Felicia Day until you said something though mate, now I want to go watch the guild again...
this is by far the BEST MLP episode to date. it shows how simular apllejack, applebloom, and bigmac are to there parents, it showed what certain characters looked like in the past, and im crying so hard rn omg
This might be my favorite episode on my little pony ever even with the Covid-19 is still running around I still think this shows really help us that we are in this together even on the roughest day. I really like this cause it shows that love and care can help us.
I assume that there were other foals from Granny Smith they just weren't important to show in this episode. Had to keep focus. Guessing Aunt Orange is another daughter who changed her name to Orange after marrying.

I love the deeper message of not letting family feuds ruin relationships. I can't imagine the amount of regret Grand Pear must've felt till his time came. Never take the relationships you have with your friends and family for granted. One day, something will happen and they're taken from you just like that.

And is perfect 👌👌👌 Also if you follow the timeline big Mac and Apple Jack meet them, so they should have known a little about them, And they should have known how they died. 😭😭😭

I have been following your blind commentaries for a few years now and I must say, this episode brought out so much more from you that I have never seen before. It was truly remarkable and beautiful. The fact that you had such a personal....involvement in this episode moved me and made this commentary so much more real. I feel for you for your sadness as well and encourage ANYONE watching this video or reading this comment of mine to cherish every single moment you have with your family. It's pretty obvious, but we have some favorite writers now, and they are the two that wrote 'A Royal Problem' and "The Perfect Pear".... Seriously, they really shot it out of the park and into the next planet...Where have they been before??
Burnt Oak looks exactly like my own father, which was disarming. I am also one who lost their dad, only my dad passed away when I was younger (12 years old). But after I watched the episode a few times that scene with Burnt Oak became my favorite part. It just felt familiar. I love this episode to bits. It's probably my favorite one out of them all. We have been waiting years for this story to come out and I wasn't disappointed one bit. Of course they aren't going to tell us what happened to them, I would just leave that up to the fanfiction writers, but it will forever be a mystery. I feel your pain on the father's day thing. It's always been a dark day for me. My heart goes out to you, Blank. You're still my favorite reactor on youtube, by far.
