Our senses can tell us a lot about herbs. They can indicate freshness, give us clues about how they work in the body, and if you listen closely enough, how well they align with our individual bodies. Our dear friend, Erika Galentin, came for a visit to our headquarters in Eugene, Oregon to share how a practice of blind taste testing can be a powerful tool in getting to know our botanical allies, even when we think we already know them. She takes us through the process of using each sense and offers helpful prompts for us to consider along the way.

Hello Erika- Thank you for this sense and taste tutorial on herbs. After recent gall bladder surgery, I am acutely aware that my body wants healing. I seek herbs that will help my liver and pancreas. Mountain Rose staff was helpful in going over their blended teas. I wanted nettle, but it can be bitter. I tried the Dawn Chorus this morning. The rose pedals with the nettle were amazig! The blend is golden, light and smooth. My herb journey is just beginning. Yes, I use culinary herbs, but there is so much more. I also bought Marshmallow seeds and Lemon Balm seeds for my woodland garden. I look forward to following this path of natural teas, whole foods and healing. ~ Diane

Such an intriguing experience. I took this exercise to my group and unbeknownst to each other, one of us chose marshmallow root for mystery tasting, and one of us chose marshmallow leaf. The group had no idea they were tasting 2 different infusions from the same plant. Although there were commonalities, there were a lot of differences as well and interesting surprises.@@mountainroseherbs

This is so great! Rather than learning the properties in my brain and applying it to the tea I'm drinking, I love that this was feeling/smelling/experiencing the properties themselves. Thank you.

Budding herbalist here:) I Had so much from learning from Erika!. I'm curious if I wanted to do a blind tasting like this, what's the best way to cleanse my palette between tastings?
@mountainroseherbs

Hi there! We are so glad you enjoyed this sensory experience with Erika! We have heard that an unflavored sparkling water is a good palate cleanser. If you're looking for something more robust, I've also heard that a plain, unsalted cracker like a saltine can work well. I'd suggest playing around with a few options and see what works best for you! Happy blind taste testing! 😊
