Shannon even mentions that they had a conversation before the interview and the guy touches his arm in that annoying way. Such a jerk.
Shannon held his cool here. I grew up with him and he was a great guy and super kind. Shannon was one of those guys that was fun to be around. I respected him then and I still respect his name even till this day. I miss him all the time!
Music And Coffee whoa it's so cool to read someone who actually knew him! I really like him and the band since I first saw their video "no rain" back when I was just a little child. Now today I still listen "soup" pretty regularly, and admire Shannon for his lyrics and vocals. :)
Constanza Paz T.Z Shannon's singing had a way of sticking with people once they heard it. Really the band as a whole made the music amazing. Shannon had a type of magic about him for sure.

I will continue to disagree with you. In the simplest terms, grunge grew out of 80s metal and punk; Melon grew out of 70s classic rock. It's in the sound and in the lyrics as much as it is in the feel and personality of the band, individually and as a group. We can argue about it all week if you like, but to my ear, Melon has a more classic sound in terms of the instrumentation, sonics and vocals. They are not grunge, but you're welcome to keep disagreeing with me.
yea I can hear the 70's influence, but grunge was what was going around at that time so of course they would have to pull at least some influence from that. Calling blind melon grunge is a bit of a stretch tho
Id like to point out to some folks who may not know the band so well, the bassiest name in blind melon is Brad. I had the same reaction, "thats Shannon, not Brad". Now I coulda let that slide, but when they start the cameras and your "on the air" and somebody starts asking about stuff you specifically asked not to talk about, then gives you an "awww c'mon pal" and pats you... fuck that.
I actually love this interview lol... that interviewer was so rude. They obviously talked before the show about not wanting to talk about GNR because they get asked about it so much and wanted to be known for their music not GNR.
Shannon had the right to be pissed. He asked clearly before he went on air to not talk about G'nR colab as it was overshadowing Blind Melon as an independent band. He also asked not to talk about the bee girl which was taking more place than their music. That guy did it on purpose and had it coming. Shannon punched him in the face right they went off the air, according to Denis Talbot (interviewer) himself.
Well, he's right. "I didn't want to insult you" -- "You couldn't". Not taking sides here, who knows what the fuck the back story really was, but anybody reading this -- that should be your attitude towards anyone or anything that peeves you. "You couldn't". That being said, Hoon could've been a bit more professional than that. Something obviously happened off camera that really, really set the wrong mood for the interview.

I am a big Blind Melon fan, my brother actually hung out with Shannon Hoon and jammed with him a few years before he and BM got famous (my brother is the one who turned me on to them) but ever since then I have been a big fan. I do know Shannon turned into a bit of a diva as his star started to rise. That could also have something to do with his drug use when they were peaking, as well, but yeah. Didn't know they were making a huge deal about him being a friend of Axl's, I wasn't really cognizant of what was going on back then :P was too young. Apparently Shannon's sister went to school with Axl Rose and became friends, or acquaintances maybe, with him.

His sister got in touch with Axl about her brother not knowing he was already signed to a deal. It's cool she tried to help him and the band, but they did great on their own. Crazy artist people are crazy BEFORE they take drugs and you can't just say "oh he's on heroin so heroin explains everything he's doing." It's just an ignorant point of view. JS2 years ago+sgtpep5 Before the interview, the only single stipulation made was that they not discuss Shannon's acquaintance with Axl Rose. They said people had been making a big deal of it and that has nothing to do with their music and they're tired of being asked about Axle Rose or Guns n Roses and they would appreciate not bringing that up. Shannon's sister was friends with Axle back in Indiana. When Shannon moved to LA, he an Axle got back in touch. Big deal. The interviewer agreed not to ask about that and to stick to the music. Then, what do you know, the prick brings it up on live TV anyway. What do you expect? How would you react if the only stipulation you had before you did an interview was blatantly ignored? They still invited all the fans in to sit with them and talked with them and had a great show and afterwards, Shannon personally apologized to every single person on the crew for reacting like that, though it wasn't even his fault in the first damn place. Plenty of others would've gotten up and walked out and not played the show at all. This guy couldn't even get Shannon's name right. Terrible interviewer and a prick as well.
I don't blame the little slip up of the name. If he was going to bring up an interviewer named Brad the name stays in the head, so looks quickly to Shannon and yeah he messed up a little. Its normal. Shannon didn't ask to be in the GNR video. Axl asked him to sing LEAD with him, not even background vocals. I wish Shannon would've punched his nose. Shannon didn't back down from a fight, but I don't think he started them either. I'm not sure of that, but it's what I gathered from Shannon's sister's interview.

That's why he told him "you should do your homework on the bands you interview.. and read the NAME TAG." I dont blame him. I think Shannon didn't like the way fame happened to him as in, he didn't want to be known as the band with that one hit song or the Bee video... But most of all I can safely say that he really didn't want to be in the shadows of Axl Rose or Guns n Roses.
they are friends-axel and shannon, and as soon as the media found out, (GNR was technically a bigger band at the time), so instead of being interested in blind melon, people were all interested in the gossip of guns and roses and their friendship, shannon wanted people to be interested in his band, not GNR

Then it least one type will be putting something good, all the time. But there have always been shity times, like now. When the music is all cookie cutter played out bullshit. blah... I'm sure he was glad to be there at first. Blind Melon wasn't that huge of a band and I'm sure they liked to give interviews. Now that was a bad mistake yeah. I was joking about Axl Rose of course. But I think that was an honest mistake nonetheless - could happen to anyone. Shannon Hoon had the right to feel insulted of course.. but he could've handled it in a more professional way.
I don't think Shannon was mad at the fact he got his name wrong, he was maybe a little harsh, but hey, listen... when a whole band is there for an interview, and the interviewer starts talking about the frontman with another band who is more famous, obviously to keep the viewers interested, it's sort of a slap in the face for the whole band while they want to talk about their own band's success.
Blind Melon is not "grunge". If you like the songs you listed, then you should understand the distinction. Melon has far more in common, sonically and lyrically, with Zeppelin and Queen than it does with Nirvana or STP. I always refer to Blind Melon as "folk grunge" ask to me its a blend of those two genres. I do think people were quick to call them grunge because of it being the 90's so back then it was cool to say you listened to grunge and now people only really know the 90s as grunge and won't accept the 90's having any other genre. but there are undoubtedly some elements of grunge there, however as it was all around at the time it would be impossible not to have some influence of it in your music.

Shannon seems like a really nice guy , when you’re interviewing someone you can at least get their name right and like Shannon said it’s easy to pull punches live ? I love this! How he didn't suck up to anyone, if he had a problem w/someone he would be straight up no matter what.
