This was played at an MTV The Cure tribute show. Various bands attended the show covering Cure songs, blink-182 chose to cover A letter to Elise. ROBERT SMITH HIMSELF said that this was his favorite cover because they put something of their own in to a Cure song. Smith even made a song with blink-182, believing in their talent and uniqueness. All of this is one of the greatest songs on of the greatest albums of all time - blink-182. So don't tell me Smith would be ashamed of this cover.
I've been listening to Blink-182 since I was a little kid. I got so super excited when I found this song because my name is Elise. I always got jealous that my friends had songs with their name in it (Sweet Caroline, My Michelle, etc.) I listened to the original version by the Cure and it just wasn't as good for me, but maybe that's because I grew up with Blink. Anyways, I love this song so much (:
Wow. definitely not what I expected, but I do like it:) I love the Cure and I think it's brilliant that Blink 182 covered this song (especially since my name is Elise yay)
@80smusicisawesome there isnt any point in doing a cover if you make it sound exactly the same as the original. blink took the song and made it their own, which is a totally different style, that a lot of cure fans might not like or appreciate.
@PUPPET4PESTILENCE This is Robert Smiths favorite cover of his work. Watch the live video where he smiles.. further more after he heard this he called blink and worked with them on a song called all of this... if its good enough to impress him its not crap.. unless your opinion some how out weighs that of an icon who forever changed music.. stupid shit
@80smusicisawesome I understand what you're saying about looking up the original version. This is one of The Cure's most beautiful, powerful, and emotional songs and Blink 182's version seems to have washed it out, if you will. But your description of "A letter to Elise" being a sweet happy cute song... Sweet happy and cute?! Wow, that is NOT the way I would describe it. It's not sweet, it's beautifully melancholic . It's not happy, it's sad. And cute, really? I don't know...
I love how they sort of tweaked the main little doodle riff line into an even more distinctive bit. Plus all these reminiscences with self titled make sense since this performance seem to have taken place in 2004
@iwasbored1195 if you want to understand why people hated it, then look up the original one by the cure. this one sounds AFWUL. A letter to elise is supposed to be a sweet happy cute song, and this is disorientated and rock version, ugh.
The ending uses the same drum pattern as the last bit of 'go' off their self titled/untitled. Reminiscences of heres your letter too at some points. Super
OMGG thats awesome!!! i used to not like my name, but now i kinda enjoy its uniqueness. I used to get frusturated because i could never find my name on the dollar store pencils as a kid, hahaha.
"Blink-182 covered this song for the MTV Icon show for The Cure". From Wikipedia. Do you seriously think this is Robert Smith's voice? Does the guitarist sound at all like Porl/Paul Thompson?
@F3FisGoodforYou you sir need to calm yourself. just because we like different music should not mean we should be obliterated. as for pollution, your hate pollutes this planet far more than anything else. dont hate masterbait then you wont feel so angry all the time :)
Being a die hard cure fan, and I know this was a lot of years ago, but their music is worth keeping going, this is another amazing cover! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DWBYg-ZET-o.html
@jowe182 dude, buddha and cheshire cat are AWESOME! u cant compare them to their "new" stuff! i also think that dude ranch is better than all they have yet. love cure love blink!
the beginning is just far to much. i think that doing a punk cover of such a personal song just doesn't work to be honest. BUT i think that everyone should know about A Letter To Elise so I'm happy that they did this cover.
4 years late but that's the blink logo, clearly different from Nirvana. It has a smile as opposed to the squiggly dead lips and it also has an entire second circle around it.
@piraloumagus ..If Naninchnaile would be such a great band they would be on MTV, on the radio like NRJ and they would play with the Black Eye Peas or Lady Gaga, and guess what they're not !... so I guess they're not that great... same comment can be made about Radiohead or Bjork, really overrated so called artists (and Bjork isn't that cute anyway).
no offence to blink 182 fans, but this ia reeally bad compared to the amazing original by The Cure (best band in the world) so, do blink 182 like the cure? is it an insperation? because they seem cover a few of their songs...
I love Blink. But this is a poor cover! Sorry guys. Maybe it's because I'm in love with the Cure, I dunno. But the old school alternative era really doesn't suit Blink. Sorry to anyone who disagrees. Peace!
Fuck, shit, damn!!!! I thought this would be good, but damn! Wtf, this version sucks!!! I mean, honestly, WHAT THE FUCK?! A Letter To Elise by The Cure is a really great and beautiful song, but this is total bullshit, how could they do this to this song?
