This is a brief talk on an engine/language that was more known throughout the 2000s. But it's foundations date all the way back to the creation of Basic, which would eventually lead to Blitz Basic, leading to a line of products by Blitz Research LTD. But Blitz3D was an engine/language that was used for 3D development, but also supported 2D too. It doesn't get used much anymore and the last successful title to my knowledge was SCP Containment Breach, one of the iconic indie horror games of all time. But it's being supported by a dedicated community and BlitzCoder, who is helping keep it alive on top of modifying it into new versions like Blast3D. For more information on it, there's a link for the developers website.
The footage regarding Blitz3D and other versions are a collection of tech demos, game projects and showcases from BlitzCoder and the Blitz community.

indie devs today r doing what was done in the 80s/90s and early 2000s, everything was experimental back then, no AAA companies were trying to be similar to one another and the games were all different.

Yup, rekindled the love for Blitzbasic/3d, going through the ancient books and documentation right now :)

There really were a lot of game engines and game maker type tools either written in BASIC or that used it as the interface language back then. Makes me wonder why its use as a game programming language died out. QBasic is actually what got me interested in programming in the first place.

Its more so because of the presence of Engines like Unity, Unreal or Godot. All in one packages that are powerful, have large communities and support multiple platforms. The indie scene kicked in towards the end of the 2000s, and Unity became the go-to at that point.

@@brokenportals Yeah, that's probably a huge reason. Game devs moved on to 3D and all the BASIC toolkits didn't. Of course in recent years we've had a renaissance of 2D platforms and simplified 3D graphics. Maybe they're due for a comeback.

@anon_y_mousse I forgot to mention GameMaker, which has been a 2D giant for some time now. But I can see game makers making a return, to cater more to people that just wanna make simple but fun games.

Blitz3D is where it all started for me. Now I’m a professional .NET developer working in the medical sector. Bit of a departure from game development lol, but Blitz3D will always be my first encounter with programming

Its nice to see someone make a video in 2024 about blitz, i still have installed along with DBpro, classic and appgamekit, sadly appgamekit studio also died. But they all still work and are fun to use. Its a shame its not user way more. Btw Truespace 3d still has a space on my pc🎉

Wow! I had no clue Blitz3D was so big. I only know about it because of some mid-2000s Polish shovelware that I discovered out of boredom. I thought it was a proprietary thing from that Polish developer until I saw this video.

Thanks for the shoutout :) Dungeons of Mysteria was actually made in Blitz3D-NG which is so close to vanilla blitz3D that it will still run(it will just look fuzzy because of the bilinear texture filter) I myself am torn over sticking with Blitz3D or moving onto a tool like Unreal or Unity after I finish Paws for Adventure.

love this in the past..any chance of reviving the engine to support modern feature and scene editor?

The BlitzCoder community would be the best place to start for inquires. There's a link to the BlitzCoder website in the description.

oh maaaan, blitz3d ♥ been tinkering with this and darkbasic pro/fpsc lately. you should do a video on DarkBASIC/DarkBASIC pro. :) i think its really neat that its the engine that powers fps creator and the early game guru versions. which kinda makes fpsc and gg frameworks for darkbasic, more so than engines. pretty neat to me. anyway, sorry i'm rambling lol, Great video!

Sick video! I made a simple space invaders clone in 2008 using blitz this video is super nostalgic for me :) If only I had stuck in because now I'm 33 and still learning the basics of coding and 3d. I have fallen in love with Godot but now I want to have a look at blitz again haha ty for video earned a sub!

Does Blitz3d have a discord community?

I would assume so. But BlitzCoder is the next alternative and has the most resources on Blitz3D I've found so far.
