I feel like the way the movie Furiosa was received is exactly what you’re talking about at the end there. The DEI stuff has had the opposite effect where now if people just see a woman lead game or movie they automatically think it’s woke garbage, and to their credit with how authoritarian and dogmatic the people at the top are being with this stuff it makes complete sense. If Alien dropped today, I don’t think people would have had the same reaction to it back when it originally dropped, and the people who make properties like the Saints Row Remake or any of these Marvel movies are completely to blame. There are always a space for women and minority people to exist in games and movies, it wasn’t until they tried to make it a REQUIREMENT that regular people strayed and started pushing away from it, because deep down they know there’s a reason and agenda to it all and it doesn’t come from love or empathy or else that would reflect back in the piece of media they make instead of the whole thing feeling like an advertisement.

I'm so sick and tired of all this race business instead of just making quality games/movies with a good story. A good story will resonate greater with people of any race and gender over something stuffed with real world political BS..

Here in the UK it’s actually a shock to not see a black women in an advert. This isn’t a joke. I actually counted 24 ads and 22 featured black women, madness.

The proper diversity in shooting games is: main weapon, sidearm, any kind of knife, and couple of grenades.

Even if you completely ignore any other negative that is coming along with this stuff, you have to at the very least acknowledge that these companies are spending significant sums of money on these programs that have absolutely no effect on the quality of the game. It is unquestionable that this money has to be pulled from somewhere, and that requires some sacrifice in the game development process.

I have a friend who just started work in a pretty important scientific institution. I can't say which one. But they're pushing this DEI stuff there, of which this friend checks two boxes. This friend has now made it a campaign to burn the DEI team at every turn, because, "I didn't work to get into software engineering, just for people to see nothing but things that don't matter to software engineering, and probably only engaging with me because they're TERRIFIED they'll get in trouble if they don't treat me differently." It won't be successful, I know, but I admire this friend for fighting a good fight, because they're (eh eh you get how I'm not saying she or he I'm so super good at secrets) the sort of person who can just get away with flipping off a room of people, and getting applause for it (even when they want people to be angry).

Character rosters looking more & more like college brochures

to indie devs: don’t take this as “no, don’t represent minorities in your game”. take it as “no, don’t represent minorities in your game *if you can’t do it earnestly*”. AAA studios are so obviously pandering for good PR that you can easily stand out (in a good way!) by doing it right.

Remember times when movies like Beverly Hills Cop or Lethal Weapon where appearing in the cinemas, when people like Eddie Murphy or Morgan Freeman were doing roles that din't felt forced and were genuinely good? When characters didn't felt that they were added to pander to some idiotic regulations, but because they were actually benefit to the story? I didn't felt any racism then. I didn't even really knew what a racism is, through I'm from Europe not USA and I only saw black people in the movies then. Eddie Murphy was just a fun guy to me. I laughed from the racist jokes, through I never felt malicious towards any other race. Those were the golden times of anti-racism sentiments, but unfortunately for some people it wasn't enough. It is never enough for them + conflict is profitable so they had support and money to force their changes., which unfortunately gave birth to the today's situation.

Fucking one of the weirdest things is seeing so many characters now with Vitiligo(this skin disorder mainly seen with black people having white patches of skin). I think a system should not allow people to seek more workforce out of a system than a human being is able to give as input. So imho absolutely nobody "deserves" so much money per year in a society that it needs at least 10-15 "workers" to create the amount of consumables just for this one person. I also think that making crazy amounts of money without working (we call it investing) is the most unreasonable thing that existed literally throughout our whole timeline of society. And no - thats not the fault of people using the system, it's the fault of the society to let this happen. It is important to be inclusive and have characters with different backgrounds (race, gender, ethnicity, class, etc.), but it can't be coming from a place of inauthenticity. When you force a character into a game from underrepresented groups, this becomes tokenism, a shallow symbolic effort to be inclusive. Any person who has any intellectual rigor in culture and power should be able to see this. This practice is antithetical to diversity, equity, and inclusion. If a game featuring an underrepresented group is done right, nobody should even notice. The character should stand on its own and mostly have a hyped audience behind it. One example I can think of is Blade (1998). It was so ahead of its time and most people liked it.

What bothers me most is the imbalanced implications. Like yeah, cool, black characters existing means they are celebrating black culture. Sure, let's go with that. So that means all the white characters have always been celebrating white culture? The standard doesn't make sense. No, of course white characters were never "celebrating white culture", they just...were characters. Their skin color was irrelevant and certainly not used in as any form of celebration. They just...existed. Done. Period. But then it comes to black characters and they are...well....CALLED "black characters", tokenized and used for celebration. It feels patronizing, like a little kid getting a participation trophy to cheer him up after he tripped over his own feet on the football field. "It's okay, Jerome, feel better! Mama corpo says you're her special lil negro!"

I'd like to try that Diversity Tool to see what is a maximum score character and then feed it to an AI Image Generator.
