Ben Finegold is one of the very few persons that can tell the same joke again and again, and still make you laugh every time you hear it :-) I love his style
"Robert Hess was in that tournament, he wasn't good yet. We were beating up on him. I mean, not in chess, we were just beating up on him..." ~ GM Ben Finegold
Ben is so funny- and that's an understatement! He makes sense in every sentence he was elaborating on chess. You can tell that he's very genuine at teaching, and wants the best for his students. I appreciate his witty humour and sarcastic jokes! Only two videos so far and I'm already a huge fan of his. Hope to play him someday..
"Yea, so my bishop's better than his, and I don't think his knight is too good, and I think my king is better, and I have the better pawn structure. Otherwise it's equal." LOL
These are brilliant videos SLCC. The quality of the lectures and lecturers get the finer points of the game across very well indeed whilst their vastly differing personalities make it entertaining. Thanks for sharing them.
We need to add symbols to chess notation for "Terrible", "Very suspicious", "Hate when that happens" Maybe $ for terrible, % for very suspicious & hate when that happens, What else?
Vinícius Borges Is such a thing even possible? I just thought it would be amusing for such a notation to exist. An effigy of absurdism on the chess board, if you will.
I used to watch ifunny during my breaks at work. Now I prefer to watch Grandmaster Ben Finegold. I have way more laughs and only have one thing bad to say about him.... He is very suspicious :)
So I finally googled that Bob Seger joke. Turn out he's a musician who had a song calles "Night Moves". Now that joke is funny! 'That's not what he had in mind when he talked about 'night moves'. LOL.
Oh man, Irina Krush, I was just reading about her. She was basically the leader of the "World" team in the Kasparov vs. the World match. Except she was still in highschool at the time, haha.
I watch chess videos to learn about chess. But when i look at Finegold - lectures i wanna see him doing the lion: "groarrrr", at best with fists raised!
Hope Ben does not mind, but I like to call his opening the Find Gold opening...it is like finding gold for me...it does confuse a lot of players. As the development unfolds the release of the knights etc...is like finding gold! Thanks Ben...love your jokes!
Just wondering: what happens if white goes with f4 after Bishop e7? Isn't it better to go and advance on the king side for white? (Considering white still would have a better queen side anyway.) If black takes on f4: then white has options to make a breakthrough through the center; or if black doesn't take, then f5 would feel / be annoying when timed right I think. Not to mention if black would take on f4: then white's white bishop will become much stronger on d3.)
13:08 Black to move. The tactical shot Nxh4 looks tempting. Threatening Nxf3+ winning the queen and if white plays Rxh4 then Nxe4 winning the rook and two pawns for two knights. Is this line worth it?
After 3...e5, what happens if 4. dxe6 (en passant) and don't allow this sort of blocked center. Happens in a lot of my blitz games, and I can't find an instant solution to it. Any suggestions?
Martin Bø If en passant, the fxe5 and you get a better center, you will be ready to castle after Be7 and you will already have a semi open file targeting f2, and also a normally problematic light squared bishop will not be a bad bishop. If you take en passant you will be already equalized by Black pieces. You can also take dxe6 and offer a trade of Queens. Losing the right to Castle is not a big deal there as Queens are off the board, then you can develop pretty easily your pieces. I´d take fxe5, but you can take either way and end up ok.
How the hell do you wanna take fxe5 when there's nothing on e5 after en passant?? and also you definitely dont get a better center just like that... your d-pawn or e-pawn could potentially weak and targetted since one of them will be backward and rather easily accessable... also after 3. ...fxe6 4.e4 d5 5.e5 could be really annoying (as Finegold would put it).....
I'm not sure what either the OP from 6 years ago or the more recent comment meant, but Ben meant that white can't play g3 because it would allow ...Nxh3.
He said g3 Nxh3+ Kg2 traps the knight but the point is that black can play g6 to remove White's knight and unleashing their bishop to defend the knight there. Later knight can join back once g5 bishop moves.
The game against Krush Example of how much engines evolved. Giving white the advantage throughtout, until final blundering draw(not that the engine evaluations are super relevant in these kind of positions
at minute 17:44 ...why did he not push h6 and played Be3? wouldn´t h6 push have been uncomfortable for black? I guess gxh6 was deninitely ot recommendable...neither was g6...
It's called Ben's Round (named for Ben Finegold) and a guy named Craig Caesar made it specifically for the Club. I have the audio file, and I may make it available for download.
