It's been 30 years since I've heard or seen this group, and they're even better than when I saw them in 1978! The musicians are terrific, especially the drummer, and DH is just...Gorgeous.
I love their look during the first album period. They combined NY punk, American 50's retro and English mod so well! No band had this sensibility they had back then and no one after them either.
Never heard this one so it's like a new Blondie tune after all these years. Cool & thanks! Man, I'm older now than she was then, but it still sounds fresh...
Blondie was such a fine band! I love this song. And this version is onea my faves vids from them. When folks fisrt saw the raw verve that Blodie put out back in 76, they musta just been blown away! And Debbie was sooo cute!
So true, music is very slowly dieing and that makes me very sad indeed. At least we have the classics to listen to again and again. Music used to have something to say, now its all about big business and nothing else.
She has such a nice dance step and voice. I am 59 years old and she is from my generation. I Love her. I Love the group too---Awesome drummer and guitarists. Mike--in Wausau Wis. Send me a line sometime soon. God Bless All.
Doesn't matter to me who started what ... what matters is that this group had a great deal of fun and, having seen them in NYC during this time, I had fun, too! Rock on world!
WOW...don't think I've seen this in at least 20 years...with original bassist Gary Valentine and an adorably clumsy/goofy performance by all involved...awesome freakin post...
Classic! One of the best US songs from the 70's. I remember when those shinny jackets were the rage. Oh wait, they're back. Man, Chris was so hot - black hair parted in the middle! Clem was and is a hottie also.
The guy on the Strat is Gary Valentine, who was Blondie's bass-player at the time, but he co-wrote the song (with Debbie Harry providing lyrics) on guitar and so he and Chris Stein swopped instruments whenever they played it. Read Gary's book 'New York Rocker' for the full story of what was going on at the time.
I can thank You Tube for making me a huge Blondie fan. I came across a very rare video of Blondie playing the song funtime in 1977 that is probably the rawest performance anyone's going to find. For some reason I can't give the link but just do a search for Blondie and the song title and it comes up.
me and my little sis have about a 10 year age difference. We aren't close or similar in any way. However, there is one thing that we do enjoy listening to...Blondie...saves the trip of akward silence on those long driving trips... ; )
WROTE BY EARLY BAND MEMBER GARY VALENTINE AND ORIGINALLY TITLED SEX OFFENDER BUT LATER CHANGED,ONE OF BLONDIE BEST SONGS THOU NO REAL IMPACT UNTIL SIGNED BY CHRYSALIS RECORDS.MY FAVE BAND EVER
Just finished Gary Valentines book NEW YORK ROCKER.... excellent read for anyone interested in the NY Scene and the early days of Blondie. Jumping around ...now I understand Gary!
haha, i searched 1976 because i drive a 1976 mk2 ford escort, and this gem poppe up, i cant belive i drive a car produced at this time, looks like a wicked year to live! i was born 85 so dont have a clue, but looks alot more fun!!
You are correct BohemianConspiracy! I miswrote my comment, what I meant to say was that most of the songs that were produced by artists from the punk movement of '76 had that aggressive non-danceable punk sound and it softened up into new wave about 2 years after. You're right that disco and arena rock had a much bigger audience, no doubt about that.
Blondie was one of the regular CBGB bands in the mid 70's before they hit commercial success. When they first came out, there was some doubt about her b/c she's so fucking hot and most punk chics couldn't physically compare. She has shared the stage with Patti Smith - an artist who was and still is well ahead of her time.
This is the earliest footage I've ever seen of Blondie performing live. This must be an English TV show. They made it big there before the U.S. If anyone knows of anything earlier than this, PLEASE let me know.
So funny to think of the movies back then they would often have a song track with blondie songs and posters in kids rooms with that all to famous pout from Miss Blondie in her best punk out fit!
They also experimented with Reggae music. "The tide is high" and (originally)heart of glass were reggae influenced songs. And early hip hop with "Rapture".
actually, blondie was a punk band that got swept up in new wave. they were the first punk band in the us to go mainstream. but, they certainly were punk in spirit. they were a part of the CBs crowd right along with the ramones, television, and so many more.
I never knew Blondie went back to 1976, everyone really looks young there. Clem looks like a high school kid.. Debbie looks great. What a Lady! She's hot!
Notice how when this song starts it sounds a lot like the intro to "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels. As it turns out, this song was produced by Richard Gottehrer, who also produced The Angels back in the sixties! No wonder!
Yeah I agree! Autoamerican needs more recognition I like how that albums got more disco songs and less punk songs. (Live It Up-Do The Dark-Rapture and Call Me) Vey creative songs there.
It was a punk fashion show in September, 1977. It hadn't hit the proverbial fan yet, but bands like Blondie and the Ramones quickly realized how badly the association to punk hurt their careers. DH had to fly around the country to convince radio prgrammers to play their records, and even after Parallel Lines they still had to win over hostile crowds when they opened for mainstream acts. The Ramones on the other hand just had stuff thrown at them; I'm sure they were thrilled being called "punk."
You are probably right. All the songs that were produced in 1976 were punk and new wave was a softer compromise with a little bit of danceability to it and this song is exactly that.
It´s ok Adam. I really thank your words. And I think that no one can judge the path of an artist. When it comes to self growth, even though it is just for money, just the one implicated can decide about. Take care.
ahh, probably my favorite Blondie song :) how I wish I hadn't lost my original vinyl press to that suck-ass boyfriend o'mine all those years ago!!! Thnks for the post :)
