Blood doping versus sleeping at altitude. Who wins the battle?
In this video, I compare blood doping with sleeping at altitude. Notably, how you go about blood doping - including EPO (Erythropoietin), blood transfusions, and synthetic blood carriers - and the impact this in terms of pros and cons. Conversely, I do the same for sleeping at altitude - which could include sleeping in an altitude tent, setting up your room at altitude, or living at altitude.
The pros of both are the increase you get in pcv / hematocrit and ultimately haemoglobin. As haemoglobin is the protein that carries blood to the working muscle, I focus more on haemoglobin during this discussion than hematocrit, as hematocrit is the source to more oxygen-carrying haemoglobin! I also share my blood test results.
I conclude with how this would be relevant to the general health and well-being sector, and of course, endurance and race against the clock sports, such as cycling road racing, Iron Man, triathlons and time trial.

The other downside of doping not mentioned is that efficiency is the key when it comes to blood; an unnaturally high Hct is generally considered a diminishing return. However, the gains of altitude are a natural adaption by the body and proven to be effective at increasing athletic performance beyond the notion of marginal gains (over the short-term). I'd love to invest in an altitude tent in the future if possible; I know it would take my existing 5.1 w/kg FTP 5.5+. p.s. I have just written a cyclist's guide to natural blood building and currently working on the accompanying video series. I'd love to get nerdy about blood with you and always up to share the knowledge I've learnt from my own year of self-experimentation. Really interesting, informative video. Cheers for taking the time to share Cam.

I wish you the best with your cycling training and preparations for it. I just happen to be at 5300 feet altitude after many months at lower altitude. I don't care so much about training but it's interesting to learn about the science behind body's changes during high altitude. There are some studies that are interesting. There are apparently some changes that are pretty persistent in Canadian miners they watched who do 14 day shifts up at high altitude then 14 down, repeatedly. I am doing stair climbing in this area on a regular basis and still hope to increase my aerobic capacity while benefiting from high altitude. I need regular aerobic exercise for good health so I figure I can push it harder than I would usually.

Seems that the altitude tent would increase the risk of thromboembolic events as well considering the MOA that triggers them with EPO. It is purely due to increased H&H. Assuming one increases H&H to equivalent levels.

I have my own Hypoxia generator, and I wanted to know how can I get the plastic pipe set-up for 1 person. I don't see that for sale on the website. I can't really put up my Colorado Altitude Tent anymore. Thank you in advanced.

I don't hear Aussie English daily so it's me don't worry, but once or twice I heard "Attitude Tents". Badass Cameron, badass! 😂😂😂😂. See, in New York, many native speakers' L is so wide you can drive a truck through it, clearly the Aussie L is nimble by comparison 😂😂. Don't mind me I'm a choir director and my wife has a linguistics background. These things are interesting to me. Nice to see you settling into your new place Cam, and your content is tops. Now when you post a new video I'm right on it right away - top stuff.

Interesting Cam, but I don't think the average racer would go to this extreme, maybe if they were going to turn pro. Would love to know what your riding/Race scene is like were you are. Love the decor in the bedroom background BTW.
@CamNicholls
@CamNicholls 5 лет назад
melbman43 agree, definitely not for the average racer! Unless you could have your room at altitude because that’s easy and the benefits spill into all facets of life. But there’s serious $$$ associated. You’ll be pleased to hear I followed up on your previous communications and have attempted to get in touch with Henk Vogels. No luck yet but I have met with Matt Wilson and Ben Kersten from ACA and looks like we’ll get some stuff happening there in the new year, which would be cool. Also will start getting some riding scene stuff going shortly. Just wanted to meet some people first before pulling the camera out 👍 Merry Christmas 🎄

I’ve slept and trained at altitude. Both work but I’m hoping training kelps change more than your blood. I sit generally at 60% blood cells. Blood dope with 60% red blood cells would be even better. In my experience your musculature has to catch up with your cardio. I also have a full bed tent. It’s great to use in Scotland in winter.😂

Tent allows you to get a full 7-8 hours while sleeping. You can set your room up at altitude, which is the ultimate solution. Cam

I don't understand why they gave Lance such a hard time for blood doping they proved this a long time ago that the gains are the same so why is one illegal???? makes no sense both of them should be illegal...….. Your lungs will learn to function much better if you focus on specific training for the lung... How do deep sea dives with no breathing equipment do it? The current Free diving world holder is Australian Herbert Nitsch He can hold his breath for over 9 minutes reaching depths of 214 meters 702 feet. Ok you are going to say they are not pushing like a cyclist True But still it proves you can focus on your lungs Aerobic system... find me on strava look at my spinouts. they are focused on my cardio aerobic and anaerobic systems... look in the analysis See how flat lined i keep my cadence and speed. its a very long interval at a very High cadence... Please try it.. When i peak in this training i can do 35 mph at a cadence of 108 Flatlining it the whole time for 30 minutes... Please let me know how you did if you try my intervals.. i have not met a Pro or anyone that can do them.. Good luck ha ha ha and Merry Christmas!! to you and your family.
