I’m seeing a very obvious progression of the lyrics if you look at them from Laurence’ point of view: at first he thinks he is doing Yharnam a service by researching the Old Blood. He thinks the blood is a blessing. Later he realizes that he was wrong. He finds out about the side effects of consuming the blood and tries to warn everyone and spread the word. The Cello/violin solo kicks in, which, to me, signifies the point at which the Old Blood took over Laurence’ conscious and he started turning and going crazy, an agonizing process, as one can imagine. The following lyrics support this by returning to the idea that the blood is something to be consumed to every last drop. It’s almost like a much more fanatical version of the first set of lyrics. Holy poop, this is starting to become one of my favorite tracks just based on this theory...

The burnt Laurence evokes the same symbolism of fire from Dark Souls series - of ultimate corruption and downfall caused by one's own reckless ambition (ending up being consumed by it, and by the flames) and desire to use their acquired mystical powers against nature's laws. Gwyn, the Witch of Izalith, Old Iron King and Lord Aldia - all share the same symbolism.

I love how this is basically a beefed up version of the Cleric Beast/Vicar Amelia OST. Signifies his position as the true leader of the church and the source of the events that lead to the Scourge.

My god, the organ and the rest of the instruments on those sustained notes in unison at 0:48 is incredible. You know shit is about to get real, and sure enough we get the full story of Laurence's ambition and his failure to recognize that the "holy blood" was in fact poison all along. "Fear the Old Blood" I. Love. Bloodborne.

I have to say bloodbornes lore is definitely unique and amazing. It really does make you wonder and think…how life Yharnam before your hunter came along. How dark were the days of the first Hunters. The night Ludwig turned into a beast and fused with his hose….. the fall of Laurence… the fall of the school of mensis…. The lore within the lore. Amazing game

Laurence always was one of my the most favorite bosses,but after understanding what's talking about in his theme I started to love him more.And by the way it makes a lot of sense what has happened in Yharnam and why everybody turned into monsters.I'm really impressed,good job 😄👍

Considering that we can only fight Laurence after Ludwig, I'd say this theme is subjectively the better theme with respect to in-keeping to the lore. You fight Ludwig 1st. Sure his theme is epic, no doubt. In its 1st phase, his festering regret for giving in to blood and moonlight is made apparent for with this droning kind of movement with the strings and choir that feels aimless and desperate, while his 2nd phase is him embracing the thrill of the hunt once more, no longer having clear lyrics to hear for the most part and basically just ecstatic yet rhythmic adrenaline-fueled screaming. But since Ludwig is 1st fought and beaten before the other 2 DLC bosses, his theme can be considered the opening movement if the DLC was an orchestral presentation. It certainly feels that way since it was featured heavily in the Old Hunters trailer. From there, you fight either the Orphan of Kos or Laurence. But IMO while the Orphan is the de facto final boss of the DLC in the community's eyes, I feel more drawn towards Laurence even though he is largely optional. He is a major character of the games lore, one of the few bosses with a speaking role, which I find more enticing than the Orphan's horrifying infant eldritch wailing. When you approach with his skull in hand, Laurence awakens and regretfully reaches out in bloody hangover, which leaves one wondering how things ended up like they did. What was it he wanted to protect and why did he see the blood as the only means to do so? It's a shame that his fight was basically a rehashed version of the Cleric Beast, though the 2nd phase was a great twist IMO. Yet as evidenced by the lyrics, one can tell how pivotal and tragic his role was in turning Yharnam into the hell it had become. Which only makes it only even more frustrating and disappointing to me that he didn't have a bigger role in the DLC. TLDR version, strictly speaking from the lore's standpoint, I'd say Laurence has the best theme. But that's just my opinion/analysis.

God that part from 3:40 onwards is amazing.

This is one of the few examples of the opening boss coming back later done right. Demon's Souls just had Vanguard return as a miniboss later on, nothing special. Dark Souls had two very crappy reskins of the Asylum Demon with a few cheap magic attacks. Dark Souls 2 has Giant Lord and Twin Dragonriders. G.L is at least somewhat more original that T.D, both aren't great though. Whereas BB has got this guy and DS3 has got Champion Gundyr.

Ever notice how this fight takes place in the Grand Cathedral, where you fight Amelia, who could be considered the last cleric beast, and now your fighting the first cleric Laurence?

His punishment in the Nightmare is brutal, he is a Beast, the one thing he hates, but on top of it he is on fire eternally, which is a beast weakness. Fucked up.

So what I got from this was essentially "So we thought it would be a great idea to inject some kids with blood from monsters... This will turn out well. OH CRAP IT DIDN'T. Tell everyone to fear the blood!"? I didn't really understand some of it though.

Every aspect of this game is total genious.

Everytime I listen to that ending of the song, I can't help but imagine that night. The night Yharnam became overrun with beast to the point that they had no choice other than to set it all ablaze. The remaining hunters and survivors looking at the colossal fire their home had become as a loud blood-curdling screech could be heard from within... The scream of Laurence being burned alive...

OH GOD!!! The Lyrics are so DAMN GOOD!! They fit perfectly!! Fo some reason I thought they were just random cool sounding words.

Recently with Elden Ring, and specifically, Godwyn the Golden, along with Laurence, remain as a brutal reminder of the absolute worst possible consequences by meddling with something that was absolutely not meant to be meddled with. They remain there not for what they used to be, but what they became, for both, dying to a blade made to kill you when you did not deserved it, and turning to one of the most horrific beasts a land can witness, will be a demonstration of the fate awaiting any and all daring to challenge a god or the night of the hunt…

This song is so good it manages to be iconic both with and without the game sound effects. Because the song itself is one of the most famous of the whole Soulsborne series, but so are Laurence's screams.
