Frogs are bouncing and splashing, Wizards really knocked it out of the park with this one.

glad to hear the frog bounce archetype is decent, it’s not often we get an archetype like that in limited

Funny how they have AFR up as the flashback in Arena rn. It's almost like they're trying to warn us about something. Always appreciate your stuff Alex! Without hyperbole. Far and above the best Limited content creator.

Was AFR known for being a bad limited set or something?

@nicholasabraham259 "Always Force Rakdos," they called it. I am a great lover of the format because I cut my teeth on it as a drafter, and look forward to nostalgic vibes from the life gain archetype and class enchantments.

Great guide! I'm so glad that frogs (along with the other archetypes minus UB) seem pretty supported :)

This set otter be a lot of fun; looks downright batty. I'm hoping to squirrel away a few of the chase rares, too. Btw, don't mean to badger you too much about it, but could you please mouse over the cards you're talking about? Not trying to be cold-blooded - it just helps my bird brain understand why I should give a rat's *** about the card. Anyway, may your pools be hopping and your plays always make a splash!

Any thoughts on color balance this set? Do some colors feel stronger or weaker than other colors?
@limitedlevel-ups
@limitedlevel-ups 2 месяца назад
Set felt fairly balanced to me, U is maybe a touch weaker than the rest but not by a lot
@munteanucatalin9833
@munteanucatalin9833 2 месяца назад
For simple set draft go red or red/black. For standard. green gets good cards, while rush decks get good cards in red, black. Tempo feels weak and control feels also kinda weak.

7:04 I’m confused with the mill/surveil comment. You say there’s 10 cards with surveil - if that was 10 cards with “mill 1” or “mill 2” are you saying that’s better? Surveil is just mill if you want it to be… and you say you may want to keep the top card of your library, if it was mill you wouldn’t have that choice so surely surveil is just pure upside? You get to decide if you want to get to threshold quicker or if you want that card on top (maybe it’s your big threshold pay off?)
@pitmaster226
@pitmaster226 2 месяца назад
It’s a combination of multiple things. The mill enablers at common are not good, and at uncommon/rare they get more finicky. The payoffs are also not good. Your threshold payoffs are common are generally on understated creatures. So, with your A+B mechanic requiring cards that aren’t good early for both halves, you’re gonna get run over by the three strong aggressive decks in the format.
@jestemtomkiem
@jestemtomkiem 2 месяца назад
Yes, but if these cards were milling, they'd be milling more cards then they surveil now, or have better stats to compensate for mill being worse. Imagine cache grab saying "surveil 4 and draw a top card if it's a permanent" (+ the squirrel-food text) instead of milling - It would be completely busted. So if you're using your surveil just to mill, you're losing value. If you keep cards on top, you're not supporting your strategy
@chrisshaw5709
@chrisshaw5709 2 месяца назад
@@jestemtomkiem that’s kind of my point though? There’s more instances of Surveil than you’d usually see of Mill in a set. Surveil has much more upside than just milling. If you want to get cards in your graveyard then there’s plenty of ways to surveil and bin the cards you see. I just don’t think it’s anywhere near as unsupported as they’re making out.

After several prerelease, tons of arena sealed, and a few drafts, I can comfortably say I disagree HARD on the statement that you should stick to 2 colors as much as possible. There is actually a huge variety of cards that fulfill several spots in multiple 2 color strategies, on top of several synergies between 2 color pairs. For example, grixis is a strong 3 color pair. Black red cares about opponents losing life, blue black has lots of evasion, and a graveyard theme that honestly isn't very strong imo, and blue red has a prowess them. These play off beautifully into a 3 color limited deck that can consistently deal small amounts of damage across the entire game, getting extra value out of the red black abilities that really tie the three colors together. Black white green, on the other hand, has lots of token support, as well as some strong tribal themes between rabbits and squirrels. There are a bunch of cards that just care about tokens, which can easily be supplied by black green or green white, and white adds the extra bit of food support that the squirrel deck desperately wants. White blue black has a very good flying archetype between bats and birds, but it isn't as strong in this limited environment because of the high number if creatures that casually have flying or reach in this set, although it is still a viable strategy, and incredibly strong with the right pieces. Red green in this set works extremely well with any other color because expend is so easy to pull off, which means any pool that has red OR green should definitely not ignore their expend cards. The only real downside to 3 colors is the lack of dual lands, which makes it harder to splash, but there ARE mana fixing pieces, and they are almost all colorless and at common, so there isn't a huge barrier to 3 colors if you want it. If you have an incredibly strong 2 color pool, then run that for sure, but the biggest problem is that most of the 2 color limited strategies are often hungry for engines to help the strategy pull together, which means that they are easily hate-drafted out, and are harder to set up in sealed. Decks sort of crave 3 colors in this limited set, either to pool together resources, like black green dipping into whit for extra food and tokens in general, or to build additional value engines, such as black red dipping into blue or white for additional evasive threats to trigger damage effects every turn reliably.

If you've played a ton of sealed, you're not the target audience for this vid! This vid is much more for the prerelease crowd just looking for a nudge in the right direction if they know close to nothing about the set.

1:00 Yeah, no… I played RG at my prerelease, but honestly I wasn’t in any specific tribe at all I don’t think I even ran a single Raccoon… I just had a bunch of good Red cards, along with some good Green cards (including 2 copies of Three Tree Rootweaver for ramp - which is literally just a one-off Mole btw, and doesn’t contribute to any tribe whatsoever), and I just went to town I had Mice, I had Squirrels, I had Rabbits, I had a couple Otters and a Honey-Badger (er, um… Hivespine the “Wolverine”) Oh, I also had a 1 mana Frog (Valley Mightcaller) and a 2 mana Lizard (Flamecache Gecko) The point is, it didn’t really matter. I chose the best 2 colors from my pool and used most of the cards. It was an aggressive deck with good removal (plus Valley Rally as a finisher) Can tribes make a minor difference if you’re trying to choose between a few cards with different creature types? Sure But you’re not going to be playing Boros Mice aggro just because you want to. It’ll usually just be a pile of random WR cards with various accidental synergies Oh, and I went 3-0 btw. (It was a group of around 50 players, with only 5 going undefeated)

"... this is going to be different from other formats, you're going to want to play 2 color decks" *everyone gasps* i dont think in any set ever, of everness, even the tri-color set (Capenna lookin at you) has anyone recommended going 3+ colors. Only one I can see is DMU but didn't see your review for that one, (man I miss that set).
@limitedlevel-ups
@limitedlevel-ups 2 месяца назад
My comment on that was more to make a distinction between a streamlined sealed format and an “often play 4C/5C soup deck” one (which happens about 25% of the time I’d say)
@GoreDough92
@GoreDough92 2 месяца назад
@@limitedlevel-ups that's fair, I was just joshin as I don't think I've heard many, if at all, any, set reviews stating "play the 3-color if it's open". Even in sets such as MoHo3 where the fixing was abundant. I like splashing for a stronger deck but I have come to respect the consistency of playing consistent 2 color mana base decks. Anyways, ty for your reviews, love listening to em
