Blow out the 1981 Neo-Noir film directed by famed director Brian De Palma has just received a brand new 4k Blu ray release from the criterion collection. This is not Criterions first release of blow out so the packaging may be the same but the disk most certainly is not. John reviews the film and the new Blu ray and tells you if its worth the upgrade!

Good Brian DePalmer flick - I upgraded from the Blu-ray -- need to dive into this 4K soon and check out all the extras. As a film editor I totally appreciated all the editing stuff!

Editing is an art in itself! I don’t think most people appreciate how much work editors like your self have to do and much works from an editor goes into the final film.

I agree De Palmas best. I love this film because it illustrates a craft of filmmaking - sound design. That cinematography by Vilmos is on another level. That fireworks scene is 🔥. The music, editing, camera movement, the story, Travolta. It’s an underrated masterpiece.

I agree a 100% it’s a a masterpiece and still is head and shoulders above most films that come out today. The fireworks scene gives me chills. I have no idea how they planned all these scenes out but it’s incredible.

@Lets Talk Entertainment & Media De Palma plans out every shot of his movies before he even shoots a frame. That's how well prepared he is as a filmmaker.

Lithgow is also in Obsession (1976). Directed by De Palma and written by Paul Schrader. It's basically an homage to Hitchcock's Vertigo. Another good neo noir to check out

Obsession is on my list of movies I need to see. For the exact reasons you laid out i’m a fan of De palma, Paul Schrader and Lithgow anytime I see him anything he never phones it in. Thanks for letting me know it’s really appreciated.

Thanks John for the great review. One thing that would have put this new release over the top is a full-length commentary track, especially since all of the principal actors (Travolta, Lithgow, Nancy Allen, Dennis Franz) are alive and well, as is De Palma. Commentary tracks used to be almost a standard supplement on Criterion releases as far back as the Laserdisc days but sadly have become a bit of a rarity in recent years.

I completely agree,I would like criterion if their going to keep doing these 4k re releases to add some new extras and update the box art. New commentary tracks would be a great idea their always fun and it’s not to see these huge famous people just taking normal. You hit it on the head they use to be a criterion staple and they definitely don’t do them as much as they used too. Maybe they will start again down the line but I don’t know what happened.

When it comes to audio commentaries, De Palma is one of the ones who is most against them. He thinks a movie should speak for itself. Spielberg, Lynch, and Warren Beatty are the same way.

Thank you for posting this. Somehow I forgot about this film for like 10 years, so I've held off on buying the Blu-ray while waiting for the 4k. I'm kind of bummed the packaging is the same , but honestly it's one of the best covers ever , so I'm actually glad they kept it the same. Definitely going to pick it up now. I agree with everything you said about the film 📽️ except Nancy Allen but we all can't agree on every little detail anyway. Great review of both product and film.

Thank you so much i’m glad you liked it. I knew I was in the minority with Nancy Allan but I also don’t want to lie about my feelings lol. Your right it’s one of the best covers that criterion has ever done so I can’t take to much off for that and it’s just and amazing visual upgrade it was worth it for sure.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I think the key is her character is meant to be cute, annoying, beautiful, silly, etc basically a mixed bag of everything. Her scenes with Travolta in the hospital and the subway tunnel scene with Lithgow are fantastic and perfectly played out by all three actors.
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Год назад
I do think she got better as the movie went on. I thought her performance in the hospital she was supposed to be a little loopy because of being in the accident but she just felt a little out of place compared to Lithgow and Travolta. It doesn’t hurt the movie by no means I love it and I love Nancy Allan so i did feel bad saying that lol

You do know that DePalma and Nancy Allen were married at the time, right?
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Год назад
Yea but he didn’t have to make her act like that lol. That felt like a choice that’s I don’t understand. I’m in the minority because she was praised for it. But it just doesn’t work for me.
@johnfitzpatrick3094
@johnfitzpatrick3094 Год назад
The thing you have to realize is that Nancy Allen's character doesn't realize how much danger she's in. She's not smart enough to see the whole picture, whereas Travolta's character has a good idea of the big picture, but even he can't see it all.
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Год назад
That’s a good point. I just wasn’t in love with her performance but it was a choice. ai know she’s a good actor and I have seen her in other roles where she was great but I cant get fully behind her in this. The movie it self though is fantastic.
@johnfitzpatrick3094
@johnfitzpatrick3094 Год назад
@Lets Talk Entertainment & Media On the other hand, Allen's character in Dressed to Kill knows exactly how much trouble she is in, and is always trying to think her way out of the situation.
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Год назад
That’s a good point right? she definitely has range. I just always see her face though and my mind goes to Robocop just because her pooping her gum in burned into my mind lol.

Just a friendly reminder that’s “most” 4K discs are region free and “should” play in any 4K player. I’m not sure if criterion region locks their discs
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Год назад
Sorry about that. We have had that issue too with a region Locks but for 4Ks there is some that are locked but lost aren’t. The only issue and I have had this is that they cost more to get to where you are if their not shipping to your region.
