He should stick to the melody because his improvisation was _terrible._ He needs to work more on ad libing instead of posing and throwing his weight around at other members of the band.

It's because the pianist is playing a completely different melodic melody that has a chord progression different from the progression of blue bossa but the progression of the piano complements the progression of blue bossa in a way that gives more flexibility and more resolve in the theoretical errors of blue bossa and combined with the upbeat tempo of the other melody and the bassist playing only the root and fifth of blue bossa gives the band as a whole a nineth chord progression that allows the wind players more flexibility in their solos
