Head cam by Michael Tran at the Buffalo Bills Stadium in New York on August 8th performing The Concord Blue Devils 2017 program: Metamorph. 98.538 - Undefeated - DCI World Champions - 18
It shouldnt really lower your self esteem, youre looking at the best of the best, there is no way to be sad about not being as good as the best people at what they do
mozak plesa yea there is but the first scale you learn in beginning/intermediate band is the Bb major scale. B major scale is learned later in intermediate to advanced band, usually when learning the circle of fifths.
Sarah Ruiz, actually it’s the tuba, at least in symphonic bands. But you are half true because The Drums are widely considered as the foundation of a Jazz band, Rock band, etc. and there is a Drum Set present
Its crazy how hard front ensemble music really is. they make it sound and look easy from an audience perspective. But holy crap I don't have that much coordination to do all of that. Hats off to Michael Tran and all front ensembles across Drum Corps International.
Yep. Obviously marching and choreography isn’t an issue for pit players, but it’s made up for with their difficult rhythms and music. There was a striking difference in how I heard the pit music in the overall performance’s recording where it wasn’t as clear, and how I heard the actual rhythms in this headcam recording.
TheMainMiek IKR. I have barely enough room to do two mallets! Most of the songs I like playing have octaves that go up and down (for example, high octave Gs, then low octave Gs), and I can’t play it because my glockenspiel is literally 2 or 3 octaves.
To be a set player for the Blue Devils, or any player for that matter, you have to be a master of your instrument. It's especially competitive for people like the set drummer and timpani since they typically only take one, so you have to be the best of the best. I would say and I'm sure at least some people would agree with me that the Blue Devils is technically one of the best corps out there, if not THE best, so making the corp at all takes as much work and dedication as an olympic athlete. All of this said though, anything can be done with enough proficiency in a subject, and with enough practice anyone would have a decent chance.
watched the drummers perspective first. thought to myself "what an amazing percussionist." when i saw you. then i stumbled across this video. great job man

Inverted_ box it generally means speak without preparation. it’s mostly in music when an artist adds random, unrehearsed lines in a song, typically in rap music. an example could be when DJ Khaled yells “WE THE BEST MUSIC” or 2Pac’s “westside”
theyre playing the flight of the bumble bee perfectly and im over here as a little flutist that struggled in the flute/clarinet part in air dublinesque
Making this a long term project to learn this! Starting today! 10/1/21 Will update if/when I finish :) 6/6/22 got a lot of the parts done!! 4/8/24 whoops 2 year late update 😅 This became a side project I forgot but I never gave up on mallets and am proud to say I have an audition for a college band in 2 months!!
i love how throughout this entire performance everyone is bodily engaged and incredibly focused on how what they do contributes to each other as an ensemble. beautiful job.
In the pit, visuals are actually really important. After all you are the closest to the audience. That’s why they tend to play very extravagantly and why they do things like flip their sticks, and it’s also why they shove the sticks/shakers in the bag in time or on notes, or also to make the sounds less noticeable. Anyways, thanks for coming to my Ted talk
I love watching percussion stuff, I miss marching band :( I was in the Kiski area marching band when I was high school. The college I went to didn't have a band, they got rid of it once I join :(
I always get a ton of shit for being in pit and it kinda depresses me. I feel like im missing out on the experience of.marching but I dont feel good enough to switch to drumline. I can play the parts but I cant march. I dont have the stamina to march a show.
TheKewlGamingMonkey marching isnt too hard. im in my freshman year as a baritone ( we dont allow trombones) and it was tough at first but after about 2 days you get everything down really easily except for slides maybe
TheKewlGamingMonkey They don't expect you to naturally know how to march, once you make drum line they teach you how to march the first couple days of band camp.
I've been alternating between being in pit and marching and I still don't understand why horn line members always hate on the pit, cause they usually rely on them for their entrances, whether they're supposed to or not :P
Yo this guy is literally me. You can tell he loves doing this and is very passionate about it. When i was in front during marching season i was like the only hyped up one. This is the best video ever!
WillMPB/ /MrPizzaBoy57 I meant it was too much pressure mentally my school has a really big band but for some reason we only have 2 people in our mellophone section and we have a lot of solos sooo 🙃 but yeah you’re right after 3rd Bass I would die
This was like the first blue devils vid i watched 2 years ago and i didnt watch the full thing cause i got bored and then i came back watching EVERY head cam idk Why
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. It's crazy to think you can get this amazing at percussion! Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work
This just healed my soul so much ... graduating high school and not being able to be in marching band, pep band, or band on general is killing me. Being in drum line was one of my favorite memories in high school 🙂
That little 7 note phrase at 7:47 is just *chefs kiss* absolutly amazing! Idek why it's this specific 2-3 sec phrase that just really gets to me. Top notch stuff right here!
I'm in begginer band and we play simple music, but every time we play as a group, it gives me a crazy adrenaline rush, so this must be like a heart attack.
ShadyCrescent93 keep that passion and use it. don’t be afraid to do new things. that feeling and that passion is what sets you aside from most of the other band kids. take it, expand it, and someday you can be in something like DCI.
Every one of those kids had the same feeling since beginning band, and it kept them going thru about 20,000 hours of practices to get to that level, just as it shall for you.
I got to say HOLY CRAP I wish out band was as amazing as this one. Even with what little you see, it feels like you there. Damn that was amazing. Amazing work you guys. 😄😍🤗
In my high school marching band, we have 4 bass players, one of which has been in the band since day one. She, to say the very least, is the worst drummer I've ever heard play. She either dramatically rushes or dramatically drags, and can't keep a steady beat to save her life. She can't even play a clean triplet, and our newest member of the band called her out on it, and even though he has just recently joined the band and has never even toughed a drum in his life until now, he is *so much better* than her. It's almost funny how a new member is much better than someone who's been playing since *elementary* lol.
The pattern is actually fairly easily, it's a lot of chromatic patterns. There a couple funky parts but once you get it the hard part is bringing it up to lightspeed
We had an indoor percussion competition yesterday and Scott Johnson was one of the judges and he scored us 1st place for music!! Definitely gave us motivation!🤩
