tempo marked 110-160, played at 148 (the video audition tempo). the audition tempo grooves like a uptempo dance song and its a lot of fun to chop. plus i love the little melody they add in the outside mallet on the way down. very nice touch. east coast broccoli needs more melody. i found it most comfortable to let mallets that had a dotted quarter or quarter space between to rest in the middle of the upstroke and to full stroke ballets that only had an eighth note between strokes. if you marched one of these groups that teaches this exercise, can you explain what your goals and focuses are? i have my assumption, but would love to hear it articulated within the technologies of your pedagogy. this has been my fav exercise from the bd packet thus far to play as a performer with the exception of vertical strokes. recently this has been a frequent contemplation of mine, how "fun" is it to play each exercise? it seems to me that just about everyone who ever got into music did so because the sound of music brought them joy. it was fun to listen to music. so why shouldn't we build upon that and make it fun to practice the music to. does it require melody to practice single alternating? no. but it sure is more fun if it exists lol. same thing for harmony and groove and all of the qualities of music that bring us back to childlike wonder. anyways food for thought, hope you enjoy.
