tempo marked 80-140, and played at 124, the video audition tempo. this one was a lot of fun to develop consistency of rhythmic shifts of laterals. to get the last beat and first beat of each bar to land exactly on the metronome can be quite challenging. to achieve this i focused on singing reps, taking a way the technique of the instrument, to clean the tempo, then would graduate to singing and air sticking to force my hands to move at the tempo of my voice/mind and then would play. i also spend time focused on getting the insides to match articulation of the outside mallets and to ensure that the various rhythmic changes did not affect dynamic/volume. glad they chose a major 7 chord for this one instead of stock chromatic 5ths. (extra dissonant since my board is a little out of tune on this chord). much shorter too than the first lateral exercise. i wonder if they play it in other rhythms like 5s or 7s or change the perm ever. if you marched a group under the bd pedagogy and read this far i'd love to hear how you guys used this exercise, the variations and your focuses. as always, hope you enjoy
