Hunting blue hares in the breath taking highlands of Scotland. An incredible place to hawk this formidable quarry. We were very lucky to have perfect weather conditions for this particular day. Low cloud and rain prevented any hawking in the mountains for the rest of the week

Goshawks are so cool...they’re just the right size. Not too small and not too big. And still have incredible aerodynamic abilities, similar to the sparrow hawk.

well done guys,those birds are a credit to you. I just wish they were not as readily available as they are as they often end up in less experienced hands.Anyone wishing to get involved should study them in depth before they committing to owning one. They can be trained but not tamed! All the best to you from County Durham .

Your videos on hawking are great and the way your goshawk manages to grab the rabbit is interesting to watch

How do you make the hawk let go of the rabbit if you want to take the rabbit home for dinner?

It was a nice day Abundant prey and fat and the atmosphere was beautiful cloudy What tool which put it in the bird's tail? Why Atjolh to the nature? Or Are you afraid of the breakup. I wish you luck on another day. :)

hussain althagafi A very special day indeed. I think you are referring to the tail guard which protects the tail feathers. I am sorry I do not understand the remaining questions. Thank you for your comments

In your opinion which is the best bird to start out on and which can catch reasonable sized prey. I must say your birds are flawless. Also what is imprinting. Regards Benjamin.
@MrHuntersnapp
@MrHuntersnapp 8 лет назад
i don't know where you are located, but in the US you have 2 choices of birds to start with; the Kestrel, or the red tailed hawk. only after you finish your apprenticeship can you move on to different raptors.
@dalemews1
@dalemews1 8 лет назад
In the UK something like a Harris or Redtail would be a good hawk to start with. They are both able hunters. As regards imprinting I couldn't begin to answer that question here. I would recommend by a book on the subject.

imprinting is the process of taking a eyess from the parents very young and simply raising the bird from a chick to an adult. it can be difficult to imprint properly because the bird has to be exposed to humans constantly, and there are alot of ways it can go wrong, for example: it can become demanding of you for food which they call being food imprinted

Excuse me Sir, do the females get knocked about by the Hare? Superb footage and great sport. Thank you. Regards, David.
@dalemews1
@dalemews1 8 лет назад
+Doctor Dolittle The hawks can get knocked around if they fail to quickly get hold of the hare's head. The hare is at least twice the weight of the hawk.

Doesn't look like much of a challenge for the bird. You do know that mountain Hare populations are on their arse in the UK?
@Flameandfireclan
@Flameandfireclan 9 лет назад
Do you eat the hare afterwards? Or is the falcon to stubborn to let go off the prey.
@Flameandfireclan

***** I was asking the maker of this video not you. But thanks for clarifying the species.

how do falcons kill their prey? they seem to kill them very fast
@dalemews1
@dalemews1 9 лет назад
Aj Odon We prefer to dispatch the quarry ourselves and as quickly as possible.
@anakruger2412
@anakruger2412 9 лет назад
+Aj Odon Falcons themselves, when the falconer can't dispatch their prey, will kill it with a little notch in their beak. If you're talking about accipiters such as the goshawk in the video, they will usually dig their long talons into it and kill it that way. But there is less suffering for the prey when the falconer is there to help.

hi. which bird would you say is best for hunting rabbits?
@dalemews1
@dalemews1 7 лет назад
This should come as no surprise, but goshawks are my preference. However, harris hawks and redtails can also be very good on rabbits, but neither can match the speed of a good, fit goshawk.
