Hawking Blue hares in the highlands of Scotland. As you'll see the conditions were very challenging for my Goshawk, with low cloud and strong winds favouring the hares. We were once again joined by eminent Canadian falconer Doug Wilson and his wife Cheryl.

Those blue hare are as large as the swamp rabbits, we call cane cutters, that I've hawked with red tails and Harris hawks over terriers here. After gutting the cane cutters, and removing their heads, they still weigh from 5 to 7 pounds. Their meat is red and delicious in a curried stew. For the hawks, they're as tough to tackle as a freight train, and the falconer has got to run in and assist quite quickly, as they're so strong they can buck and twist out of your hawk's grip. My hat is off to you, your birds, and dogs!

r22accipiter Thanks,I appreciate your comments. I must admit to not having heard of your cane cutters. They sound like a real hand full. What part of the world are you from? I'm guessing somewhere in the states?

dalemews1 I'm in the Southeastern USA with cane cutters and grey tree squirrels. I've always had goshawk envy, but it's too warm here for them. Harris' do better here with our frequent 60F winter days. Back in the mid eighties, back when I was hawking, my wife would curry stew a cane cutter, and we'd eat from the stew pot for a whole week. ... And yes, of course, my birds prospered from their enthusiastic work!
