Blue is a Pathetic Protagonist | Wings of Fire Analysis 

Blue is just a sweet and anxious personality who thinks about others above himself. I think you don’t understand him, because you haven’t met anyone like him. But I actually relate to him quite a bit and find his pacifistic beliefs/actions rather inspiring considering what kind of life he has to live. He likes HiveWings because he is extremely uneducated about their dictation over his tribe, especially considering that he’s been brainwashed since the day he was born. He believed that HiveWings were his tribes protectors which is a classic tool of manipulation, I like your videos, but I disagree completely. You’re not used to his type of character, sometimes people and in this case; dragons, just aren’t as angry as others.

I love all these WoF Analysis's and you make a point but I have to disagree. The way Tui had Snowfall and Blue see through other dragon's perspectives was actually quite smart, as, for Snowfall she learns what the Panatlan dragons have gone through while also showing the readers all the different characters and scenes we wouldn't have got a chance to see if it wasn't for Snowfall. Tui gets a bunch of other dragon's perspectives into one book which is clever and saves her from having to do it one book at a time. Blue's character is actually quite interesting to me, most protagonist so far has all seem to be rebellious and not meek at all. They all fought from the start. But Blue's personality gives a change, he isn't cliche and doesn't fight back but instead goes along with everything the HiveWing's says and it makes sense. The HiveWing's manipulated the SilkWing's into believing that they were the SilkWing's rightful ruler by the saying of Clearsight and it would be easily believable. Also- 'Like Warriors where charcter's are all like blank pieces of paper like Lionblaze' LOL

I liked blue, though you made good points, I have to love him. He was just an anxious boy and dindnt really do much, and the way he answers problems, other than the break down part, is like me. He reminds me of my first read through, and I like that.

Personally, the main difference between turtle and blue is that blue wants to do good, but turtle doesn't want to. They both don't do the thing most of the times, but for different reasons.

Blue makes my heart melt. I just want to cuddle him. I can relate to him easily feeling sorry for others. 7:07 That describes Blue's father, whom Blue resolved not to be like, from what I can remember.

I completely agree, but I don’t think anyone else could have started the book other than Blue. It’s mainly because of how the books went, and how he was built in this series, well, until he got mind controlled.

Blue does actually try to escape the flamesilk cavern. He first looks for a way out and finds one, he then tries to take Admiral with him and Luna and makes a point. He is also quite thoughtful if you haven't noticed. At the end of book 13, he makes a point that he doesn't want people to steal his flamesilk and they agree. I strongly disagree with your analysis of this wonderful character.

With your argument about the hive mind, this doesn’t happen often until Luna’s metamorphosis. Cricket has stated this and it isn’t an everyday occurrence. It isn’t “Thousands of dragons leaving the city everyday” I disagree with other points of your argument but I wanted to point this one out

I love blue, but I love him mostly because of the things that makes him stand out, he puts himself into others shoes, he wonders what they’re thinking, I’ve always thought that it’s not very accurate because he wouldn’t be able to see the bad things but then I remembered moon, she saw good in everyone stating that no one is evil, she’s a mind reader, I think that maybe Blue is the same way, (just without actually reading people’s mind)

Actually, if I recall correctly, the mind control only happened once before everything, when he was younger. It was from Cricket’s book, and it said that Cricket saw them from her mother/grandmother’s office. It is possible it was only Cricket’s neighborhood who came to get the old dragons the reason they were mind controlled, and it said that Katydid was one of four dragons taking the old dragon to Wasp hive. Or I could be wrong.

To be honest for every character, Clay: A great beginning to the series, and makes people want more, but the only problem is that Tui neglects the MudWings. Tsunami: Feels a bit forced to go into the Sea Kingdom, but it is actually nessessary. The Lost Heir is a very memorable book. Glory: Again, Glory's perspective gives us insight and pride for the RainWings, which is why she's the most popular character besides Clay. Starflight: A great part of the book series too. Not sure what flaws it has, though. Sunny: Like all final books of a series, Sunny's book feels a bit forced for the JMP series. The introductions of Moon and Darkstalker feel forced. Moon: Esentially a great character in Moon Rising, but she loses her personallity after, and is only used for x Winter or x Qibli content. Winter: Basically a banished prince arc, but he doesn't improve much afterwards. Peril, Turtle, and Qibli: Great books, but again, with Qibli's book, the introduction of Luna feels forced. Blue: I agree with you, this has the worst introduction to an arc ever since The Trials of Apollo. Cricket: This is an interesting part of the series, but I don't remember much from it, so I won't elaborate further. Sundew: Same with Sundew. Snowfall: I haven't read her book.

While I do disagree, I do think that this is a good video! I do have a lot of theories on what you mentioned, since I really love the SilkWings, so I'll share them here. Blue met Swordtail on the racetrack because both Luna and Io did track in school and both of the brothers were supposed to stay with their sisters after school. The Chrysalis is very, very big, and there are not many dragons who actually know how big it is. In a Hive, there is many sections of the Chrysalis with a system where most of the dragons in a section only know about their particular section or only a couple, so that if one is discovered, it would be hard for the HiveWings to find out who everyone in the Chrysalis is. I also theorize that Io does know about many of the sections and has been in the Chrysalis for a lot longer than even Swordtail and Luna know about, since she was instructed to keep it a secret. She went on missions for them, which was how she had friends in Yellowjacket Hive (mentioned in TPJ), and already somewhat knew Cinnabar (which would be part of the reason Cinnabar was so eager to join Io, since she already liked her). Luna would have found a section of the Chrysalis and told Io and Swordtail, and got them to join too (even though Io would already be a part of a different one). While Blue was escaping, two random SilkWings helped him get up a ledge, Io told them "the seeds will grow again" and they helped them escapea by blocking the hallway by pretending to argue with wings spread. This would be a Chrysalis code since Io would be in a section with them (she would be in multiple sections at once) and know that they would help, or she would at least know the code because of her long involvement with the Chrysalis. Burnet and Silverspot did know about flamesilks and the Chrysalis, but tried very hard to shelter Blue so that he would not be taken away like Admiral. They wanted very much to protect him by teaching him that nothing was wrong in the Hive and anyone who said different was lying. They were also very afraid of the HiveWIngs and that they would separate them and their children. I did not proofread, sorry if it is hard to understand!

I disagree, blue is a very relatable characters in my opinion. And blue is a very complex character if you did deeper.

I have to contradict some points : Cricket looks him as a test and not a friend . I disagree as Cricket considers him a good friend as Cricket said in the same book and in Hive Queen . Yes, Blue crumbles under pressure but that is also shows his personality and how he sees other dragons

I'm a little confused when you were talking about the flamesilk cavern, and about blue not even thinking about escaping, he was desperate to escape in the book but just needed help doing it. That's just what I'm pretty sure the book said anyway, great video as always and I TOTALLY agree on blue being a blank slate character!

I was blind to your points while reading the book, and even WITH those points running through, I still think blue was the right dragon for book 11. I don't have any direct things to say, but I agree with the vast majority of disagreeing comments. He is just fit for the character, and, unlike the majority of perspectives we get, Blue has a way less violent way of thinking.

Uh... Luna couldn't exactly be the protagonist. She was in a literal cocoon for most of the book. Swordtail might have been a better candidate.

Blue is my favorite character in the whole series, simply because I relate to him the most. I definitely think he deserved his own book, and I think Tui did an amazing job on his book. I couldn't ask for a much better character to start off the forth ark.

I personally think that it should have been Luna at the start, Blue at the end. Of course, this would have to have some major changes. For example, Luna would be taken by the Breath of Evil instead of Blue. I just feel like it would have a much bigger chance for Blue to be fleshed out and more interesting as the final protagonist of the third arc. Instead of just not knowing anything in the first book and having a rushed romance with Cricket. I also think Swordtail could have been a potential better protagonist for book 11, mainly because he would also have a connection to the Chrysalis and a lot more to show for the Silkwings.

As much as I agree with you there is two points to dispute. You say that he doesn't even try to think about escape from the FalmeSilk Cavern. Yet at least twice he searches the cavern exclusively to find an escape. He even learns how much of a powder keg of animosity and grudges that the Flamesilks themselves are on one of these recon missions. A fact that could've been easily exploited if Cricket hadn't found him first. Also IIRC it is said by Cricket that the mass possessions were extremely rare (until Blue escapes from Cicada Hive) so it is possible one just didn't happen where Blue could notice it.

What are you talking about? No other SilkWing except Blue is content with HiveWings in charge, this is literally spelled at loud by Io and Luna. They allow them to because they live on fear, this is very common for totalitary resim to use terror as a metod of rule. And how they're suppose to protest when any disobedience is punish by being paralyzed? Swordtail was send to prison at least five times for being disobedient, which Blue himself admits was unfair. Beside, you mentioned Chrysalis, so you must know that not all SilkWings are happy with their situation. And what do you mean by Blue not making any choice in the story? He sacrifices himself so Cricket and Sundew could escape from hive. Not to mention the statement of him not making an escape attempt later is just wrong. He try to find a way out and discovers Sundew and Cricket digging a tunnel. His arc is not about getting less shy, is about standing up for himself and dragons who he cares about. He even explain that in the book to his father. He doesn't seem to be particulary shy, he has friends and in the first chapter he speaks to HiveWing he never met before. Lack of social skills doesn't seem to bother him, he's very emphatetic and doesn't want to offend anyone, that's not the same thing. Oh, and how swapping him with Luna is suppose to fix anything? She was unconcious for the most part of the book.

I fully agree with this. Blue is worst protagonist i have ever seen and would do much better as side character, he's really boring, never once thinks for himself and will do anything someone tells him to. It was interesting to see though the perspective of someone who wonders what life is like for others but it got exhausting pretty quickly. Heck! Even Swordtail would've been a better choice for protagonist then Blue! Blue had to be the worst, most cliche, most boring character to ever exist in the series. He really had to be a Flamesilk. I hate him.

I think he is a good start to the arc, but he wouldn’t be good for book 15.

I think Blue's a good slate in a dystopian world. From Arc1-2 of war, Arc3 starts with 1984 vibes. His mother's quietly upset of metamorphosis. Blue snaps from his coping acceptance seeing the extreme in his father trapped among flamesilks. If anything improve Blue, he DID need initiative rethinking Hivewings than readers at page 200 for that one satisfying development.

Your videos are absolutely amazing, but I disagree. You keep mention these three things: Blue has no character. Blue is too empathetic taking away from the character. And finally: Blue does nothing for himself.I believe blue is just more relaxed and empathetic, making him gullible. He prefers not to take heavy action: Which leads me to why your points are wrong. You say the reason for the first one is that he focuses on others characters leading to him having no character- but in the book he seems nerdy, kind, empathetic, and anxious. And I think his empathy adds to his character rather than getting rid of it. And I feel like he only does nothing for himself BECAUSE of his personality- it really adds to the story. Also you say their love was rushed and I disagree even more with that- I feel like 'a couple of weeks' is heavily exaggerated, and even if it were that case he went from 'Oh I completely trust the hive wings and believe they're doing the best they can for us, they're just naturally above us" to "The hive wings are lying to us and the queen is running a kingdom where silk wings are treated unfairly and she has all the power- not only that she's been poisoning the eggs. It's safer if we LEAVE OUR HOME FOREVER TO A PLACE THAT MIGHT HAVE DRAGONS THAT WANT TO KILL US." I'm sure that's self explanatory. Also- "Warriors are all blank slates like LionBlaze." Couldn't agree more- after the first series it went to background characters to have no personality to everyone with no personality.

The worst protagonist? Yes. A bad protagonist? No, not really, the fact that he is so empathic is CENTRAL to the theme, and the point you mentioned at 2:02 , the reason we didn’t get to that is because it’s not important to the main plot, therefore Tui didn’t spend the time to write a scene specifically for exposition. Blue also does not like hive wings persay in his book, he more or less still views them as human, rather, dragon, he is one of the only characters in that arc that doesn’t see the world in high contrast shades of black and white, he is a character with a flat arc, therefore, he doesn’t change his core beliefs, the only problem is a problem I have with this series as a whole sometimes, never going back to previous perspectives, which I think Tui managed to dip into with the dangerous gift. In conclusion, this video makes some decent points that I can tell that you genuinely believe in them, I don’t, I think there is a few things you missed, whether it be the core theme or what blue’s internal beliefs actually are, and I would genuinely like to hear your response, thank you for reading

Now, I've only just finished The Lost Continent, but I've gotta say: Tui severely underused the Silkwings sensing vibrations via their antennae. How the heck are Silkwings not automatically expert claw-to-claw fighters when they can do THAT?!? Even if Blue didn't have his silk nor his wings (and the hivewings are absolutely JACKED), he still practically has insane reflexes because of his antennae. Once he realized that Queen Wasp was awful in the Library, he should've ran straight into battle. The mistake I think Tui made with Blue, is not related to the character’s personality or development, but rather, not making the best of Blue’s abilities.

You did make really good points, but I think that it was a good idea to use blue, as he wouldn’t make as good of an ending character for most of the reasons you stated. Yes, he is and was weak but he was good to start off with in the beginning as his view of other dragons helps you to get a grasp of the situation pantala is in. Though he did like hive wings way too much for the sake that his sister and friends disliked hive wings, as well as the fact that they choose everything for the silk wings, I think that he was a pretty OK protagonist. Not to mention that you could argue this with the other starter protagonists as well, as Moonwatcher’s mind reading abilities gave her a good look at what other dragons were thinking, again, setting the scene for the second arc. In the first arc clay was also a pushover but he thought about others a lot. So honestly, he was a bit bleak at first and still kind of is but I think that he is almost on the same level as the other starter protagonists. Like you said he isn’t as good as the others because he didn’t have and strong opinions of his own, but I don’t really think that Luna would be a great starting character for the third arc. Blue overall just fits the pattern of every starter character having special abilities as well as thinking of others. Thank you for listening to my rant. Book 15 is coming!! Luna is the main protagonist in the book Flames of hope. She, like blue also has a goal. She’s a flame silk like blue, she might help snowfall as on the cover she seems to be in a volcano as the rocks on the roof to the cave come from a volcano, this might indicate that there might be a volcano in pantala, the volcano may be in the mountains near the poison jungle. I love your art by the way, you inspire others to read the books, and the amount of effort you put into your drawings is amazing, I encourage you to keep doing art for RU-vid, we all support you!

I do like how you and others finally called out darkstalker fans, but the ball was dropped a little bit here. Why is it you were attributing characteristics of Admiral to Blue himself when he was trying to escape? Comparing Turtle and Blue is like comparing apples and oranges. Turtle is a privilidged member of the ruling class and a reality warper. Blue is a victim of oppression who tries to see a better world due to not initially being in a position to change things.

Having Opinions is different than being ignorant of understanding. You can understand a character, their personality and their motives, and still not enjoy the character. That's why diversity is a great thing, and WOF does it very well. I don't particularly like the execution of blues character, or his tendencies, but there's still parts of him I can relate to, even though I dislike his character as a whole. I mean, Most fans tend to love Moon, for example. I still understand her character and can relate to aspects of it even though She'sby far my least favorite, and, my opinion of her character transcends into the realm of loathing at most times. However, that's my opinion, and that's ok! The beauty of fiction is astounding and has the ability to resonate with so many different types of consumers. I don't think that comes from a lack of understanding or knowledge of a character, I think instead that it boils down to individual perspective and opinion. Man I love fiction 😍

I do like the concept of Silkwings bowing down to Wasp. It let me run a bit wild and I made my idea of that set up a lot closer to Half-Life 2’s City 17.

I love blue personally my least favourite book is escaping peril peril. She was on scarlets side then she was on clays side then she just took a animus touched necklace with no concerns even tho clay had alwase said that if peril had no fire scales clay would be dead soo I just don’t like escaping peril just the way the book was written but thats just my oppion.

You are really underrated

This is the same reason Fantastic beasts didn't get a lot of public reception along with newt :( people deep down can sometimes be disappointing as despite their best behaviour deep down is not optimal. People want the hyper masculine harry potter to save the day with big explosions and will beat the bad guy into summation, its a trait we have sought after for countless generations and despise the 'newt' character's as most really don't have the time to really listen to people in their lives and thus cannot comprehend the idea. I think the author was trying to go for that and go with a more adult theme like WOF tends to do, but as a "kids book" it goes over most intended audiences head unless their mature enough to understand. I think it was a good idea for Blue as the POV for the first book as the series had started bringing in more mature audiences that would appreciate it. Rereading the series you can see her writing has evolved and I would say in a good way, tho perhaps arc 3 was a bit ambitious trying to fit adult themes into a "children's book" but Id say she did a pretty good job. Perhaps take a read of the book not with the expectation of an action dragon adventure but as a journey of self discovery from a person you may not have seen before, one that gets cast to the shadows, who didn't grow up special, not until it is thrust upon him. He's a Newt not a Harry, but I think you can gain much more insight into this world from a Newt than you could ever by any other means, especially when that world is alien to you as you no longer see it though your original eyes. I'm surprised you compare him to Luna as she has little to no deeper character apart from a blunt force instrument, next to lizard id say their not exactly thought provoking but I don't blame that on the original idea or the author, more so the time constraints and pressure for the 15th book that wasn't her fault. What is interesting is the word "hate" here, is it the lost potential or the change from previous character personality's? Can you hate the void for lacking, perhaps we just don't know. Just it might be a bit iffy to say you "hate" blue as that simplifies your own to the opposite, just a suggestion not critique. Theirs something there, you just have to look, then again, everyone sleeps well in the shade, especially if its all they know. New horizons and all that :) hope this inspires some thought and keep reading my fellow fanatic fans of fiction. x

I feel like Blue is good and bad at the same time. He is a hollow character, but he's also wrongfully content. In this context, that can be good for new readers to learn about the world as Blue learns. The fact that he was very content made him unable to learn about the true nature of the world he lives in, from what I've seen.

This is decently well-thought out but I wanna point out a few things here. Blue being weak or inactive (for the sake of briefness I'll just shorten this to impotent) honestly isn't particularly bad. I think having a range of characters with different abilities, morals, and mindsets is integral to interesting stories. While dragons like Glory, Tsunami, and Sundew are really damn cool, not everyone can or should be them. And yes, there are "weaker" dragons with similar personalities to Blue (Sunny or Turtle). In terms of the whole "other people doing things for him" thing, I'd say that's mostly because he was raised to follow the rules. He doesn't know to run, or fight, or hide- all he knows is that HiveWings supposedly know what's best for SilkWings. And yes, other SilkWings are more aware of the injustice they live under, even his own half-sister. Though, it may be that Blue's mom raised him slightly differently (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't re-read TLC in a while). His initial mindset and life also (likely) reflects the reality of how many people lived in our world, and still do today. For example, countries like Russia or China have HEAVY censorship laws similar to the HiveWings, leading to people to not question their government. Even here in the US, some people in extreme political groups (just take whichever one you hate the most and put that here instead of me doing it) are entirely blind to/want to keep people blind to certain realities- an example being FL governor Ron DeSantis' "Don't say gay" bill. TLD;R I think Blue well reflects the mentality of people living in autocratic societies. Beyond that, his pacifistic, chilled out nature is quite charming in my opinion and contrasts/complements the more wild, inquisitive, and aggressive ones of Swordtail, Cricket and Sundew. Also throwing the whole "I hate this "uwu cinnamon roll" so much. He is just a ripoff of Turtle." bit at the end kinda makes the argument difficult to take fully seriously- I understand those feelings but keeping them to yourself will help convince opposed viewpoints easier rather than turning them off with descriptions like "(I'm not typing it) cinnamon roll" or "ripoff Turtle". Edit: I know full and welll that yes, i did actually have "it" wirtten down here, but that was from a copy-paste. I'm gonna leave the "I'm not typing it" bit because I think it's silly.

Look I'm not going to be a Karen about this but I think blue is not a bad protagonist the lesson he learns is to stand up for himself and his loved ones when necessary he is very very kind for goodness sakes not every main character has to be angry selfish and mean he's not that different from sunny and nobody hates sunny as a character they are both optimistic and put others before themselves so don't be mean about it

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 15 Just occurred to me after reading The Flames of Hope and then watching this again that Blue and Lunas’ POVs that they probably should have had their places swapped in the arc. Luna is a more active character who was just as familiar with Pantala as Blue so as to introduce the audience to the new continent, as well as to the resistance movement, the chrysalis. She would better suit the more action driven plot line of TLC and would be put in a potentially interesting dilemma if the othermind used her to take control of pantala instead of blue. We learn in TFOH that Luna feels intense guilt after using her silk to hurt others, so what would happen if she had no choice? Blue, on the other hand, would fit better in a more passive role such as that in TFOH. His empathic nature could be useful to get through to Lizard and convince him to explain how to defeat the othermind, he would still probably form a close bond with Dusky, maybe even more so than Luna, being an empath would allow readers to learn more about the other members of the stealth team, and he would overall suit the theme of “talons united” much better IMO.

Yeah I agree with Seawong, Blue is a great character

The 3rd Arc is my least favorite arc,the covers are great and I still enjoy the 3rd Arc quite a bit but it’s very weak compared to the last 2 arcs

You are right. book 11 didn’t even make me motivated to read on (even though I did) Luna is the protagonist in upcoming book 15 and I bet it will be more interesting. But I like blue for the fact that his personality is different from any of the dragnets of destiny or the dragons in the other prophecies. Honestly I just think that blue is pathetic by hating changes. that’s all I’ve got to say Qwq

Luna wouldn’t be a better protagonist for one reason, SHE WAS IN A COCOON HALF THE BOOK! This would have drastically shortened the ark
