In this lesson, I'll be showing you 5 of my favorite strumming patterns for playing solid bluegrass rhythm guitar. Rhythm playing is probably the most important aspect of bluegrass guitar but often the most overlooked. The greats like Tony Rice, Clarence White, Doc Watson, Bryan Sutton and Billy Strings are world class rhythm players as well as lead players. I hope you'll be able to take these patterns and apply them immediately to your bluegrass guitar skill set.

Once again; your guitar playing wisdom has helped me become a better guitar player. My rhythm playing will improve dramatically from your guidance! Giving a more in depth explanation at the end of your lesson based on you knowledge from personal experience is SO Very Helpful! Thanks Aaron! Mike Spangler

Aaron, I really appreciate your lessons. I enjoy playing bluegrass, although I've never been super fast and many of these players like to go at such blazing speeds it's a bit intimidating!

Hey Rob thanks so much. Yes, this is a pretty fast style of playing but if you’ll download and use a tool like the “Strum Machine” app, you can practice this stuff at any tempo you want with backing tracks that sound great and are really fun to play with. This is a pretty fast style of music but please don’t let that intimidate you. Take it as slow as you need to and build from there

Can we change the patterns in the same one song? For example use the whole pattern of one of the set you taught and then switch another of the patterns ... What I am doing is trying to re program muscle memory and so on. This is a great lesson for me and thank you.

@@aaronjaxonguitar This is amazing, just a little practice my ear hears different "rhythm guitar" sounds... I play a little bit like Chet Atkins and Tommy ... and so on and make up stuff.. but this opens up a whole new thing... Variety .. and being able to sorta play them ... is neat... I can't thank you enough. I'll try to follow your work.

Two questions, what gauge and type of strings do you suggest.. ... Thanks for not uploading a half dozen all at the same time because such just fills up my screen and is annoying. I have recently started playing live with several players and instruments and they are quite good ... I am sort of new and usually only play finger picking at home... So this will help a lot.

I use Elixir Nanoweb Medium strings. I do suggest using medium gauge strings but there are lots of great makers/brands so it’s best to find what you like best. Thanks

What is a good bluegrass pick? I have been using a thumb pick 100% or thumb ... but want to learn picks
