In this video I demonstrate some of the cool things you can do with Wilde tuning in 1st and 3rd position using the blues scale. I'm playing a Wilde Tuned 1847 in the key of G.

Just received delivery my first Wilde Tuned harmonica. I got in in A, mainly to take advantage of the fact that I can play the ‘missing’ note from On The Road Again. It’s also my first Session Steel. I’m loving the tuning already. I’ve already improvised a few things on it I couldn’t already do on a standard harp, and am looking forward to really getting to grips with the tuning and learning it properly. But I really wish I’d had the cash to get the 1847 version. I’ve been using 1847s in a few keys for 4 months and they are fast becoming my favourites, but the Session Steel is just ghastly. I’d heard a number of bad reviews about the lack of responsiveness and inconsistent quality control, but I dismissed these rumours. I now see why some people don’t like them. I can’t play 10 blow without 1 blow playing softly at the same time, 10 draw (when it plays at all) either chokes or wavers between being played plain or bent. I’ve tried gapping but it hasn’t made the slightest difference. The lower notes are just not very responsive, and I struggle to bend crisply enough and it’s the quietest harmonica I’ve ever played. It’s not because of the stainless steel reeds, as I have no issues with 1847s. I don’t have these issues with any other harmonica I’ve played. It’s a shame because it’s spoiled my enjoyment of the Wilde tuning which, as I say, is great and rather liberating. I’d never by another Session Steel as long as I live. Maybe one day I’ll have the cash to get myself a Wilde Tuned 1847 instead. Can’t get enough of the 1847.

Thanks for this. I’ll save my self the headache and splurge for the 1847. I wonder what makes the sessions so bad??? I’ve never played a Seydel so I have no clue how any of them play.

@@cincinnatipedalsteel4347 I’m not sure why, but it’s a common problem I see in reviews. It’s got quite a chunky cover plate, built like a tank, so maybe the shape and design has something to do with it. Or it may be inconsistent quality control. That all being said, I read a few reviews that said the Session Steels get better the longer you play them so I stuck it out for a few months. It’s still not very loud, or as responsive as my other harmonicas, but it plays much better. Whether it needed breaking in, or whether I’ve just naturally and gradually adapted my technique on a subconscious level I don’t know. I like it better now, although it’s still the quietest harp I own. And it does have quite a fat tone, which is nice for a bit of variety. But I still wouldn’t by another Session Steel. I was told that 1847s were harder to play so I got some 1847 silvers to force me to refine my technique. But I found them a dream to play. I find it harder to play fast runs because the stainless steel reeds require more precise breath control, which I need to work on. One required at one or two blow reeds to be gapped due to choking notes, but once done they are a joy to play. I love the tone. Very responsive. Louder than the Session Steel and beefier than Marine Band. My ‘G’ has a rich dark brown tone, warm as anything, and great for slow soulful stuff. My ‘A’ is my favourite harmonica. The reeds take a effort to react because of the stainless steel. It’s almost like it fights back a bit. But that allows me to slowly ease in and out of bends slowly and with expression when I need to, and also allows me to slowly increase and decrease volume by blowing softer and harder to ease out really expressive notes. I find Marine Bands almost a little TOO responsive and go into a full bend too quickly and easily, which I don’t always want. It makes them great for bright, fast playing. But if I want to play really expressive bends and scoops, and play heart-wrenching slow blues (which I really like) the 1847 is perfect. But I can also play fast runs too, although it took a little practice and tweaks to my technique. Unlike any other harmonica I’ve played (Marine Bands, a few cheaper Horner’s, occasional East Tops and Kongsheng and a lot of Lee Oskars) I find that the 1847, more than any other, gradually bends and shapes around my personality like a deep, slow-burning relationship. They’re not very forgiving in terms of sloppy technique, and my playing has improved since I started using them. If I had more cash I’d get a full set.

Most convincing ! Talking about third position, in my mind, what you "lose" regarding the fifth in the middle octave is more than compensated with what you gain in the upper octave as far as expression is concerned. Moreover you also get the major third easily on holes six and nine with a slight bend, the chromatic movement, minor third, major third and fourth is very cool too.

Great as always. So the W.T harp labeled G ... I presume 1st position will be in C ?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde Год назад
Thanks Amos. No, 1st position G, 2nd Position D, 3rd Position A. Wilde Tuned harps are labelled the same as regular harps. Only the Wilde-Minor tunings are labelled in the second position key, as most natural minor harmonicas are.

Can I ask you something?...what does 1 (one) and 2 (two) slashes mean?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde Год назад
Each slash represents a semi-tone or half-step bend. So / is a half step bend, // is a whole step bend.
