Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson (February 8, 1899 - June 16, 1970) was an American blues and jazz singer, guitarist, violinist and songwriter. Born in New Orleans, LA, he studied violin, piano and guitar as a child and learned to play various other instruments, but he concentrated on the guitar for most of his professional career. Johnson’s first recordings were for the Okeh label in 1925, playing both violin and guitar. Before WWII he recorded for Okeh, Gennett, Columbia, Decca and Victor (Bluebird). Afterward, he recorded singles for Disc, Aladdin, King and Rama; and made long-playing 33 ⅓ rpm records for a variety of labels. During his four-decade career, Johnson accompanied countless singers including Victoria Spivey, Clara Smith, Alma Henderson and Martha Raye.
