Two quick notes - at least on my screen the Alexa looked overly magenta on just about all the shots. And 2ndly - how can you do a "low light test" and not even MENTION ISO??? The P4K performs differently at each ISO. Noise and dynamic range vary a tremendous amount. Kinda important to know exactly what ISO you were shooting at for each shot.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Tor Johansen hi Tor! Thanks for watching. What screen are you watching on? We graded here on our Flanders Scientific and it looks accurate on the Alexa. The cameras were shot at Native ISOs. Alexa is 800. BMPCC 4K is 400.

Those were my thoughts exactly. I'm thinking they just wanted to do a straight out of the box comparison to let buyers know what to expect and/or what extra they may want to purchase to make the bmpcc4k operable.

Rodney Cooper Filmz hi Rodney, yes more or less. We tried to keep the comparison as close as possible filming the cameras side by side. And we did not bring either footage into resolve to grade it. Just the basic rec 709 LUT was applied to each.

We used some sort of 3rd party LUT. Can't remember which one it was, but it was Rec709. Honestly looked better by adding the Arri LUT. I prefer coloring from scratch in Davinci. I always loved Blackmagic cameras since first came out. I used Canon and Sony, now I got my first BM as Bmpcc4k. I can clearly say that; if BM was not appear, with Bmpcc OG at 2013, we could not afford these kinda cameras ever. BM rules the market indeed. They really makes high-end cameras with very cheap prices. After all these years some brands can bring 10 bit and raw to their mirrorless-shape cameras and they almost are expensive than Bmpcc4k :) Beside this topic, there is sensor, color palette and low-light differences here in video. Arri's sensor more cinematic out of the box (like Bmpcc OG). Bmpcc4k more crisp, sharp at 4k res. But when you think about cost difference...

Hey there! Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree it’s very good that Blackmagic started making cameras. It certainly shook up the industry with giving us things like 4k and 6k RAW for a fraction of what other companies were charging. The Pocket 4K is impressive and we also did a video comparing the pocket 6k to a Alexa Mini and I think they got it even closer with that camera to the ARRi color science. The BMPCC 6K would be a killer camera but the motion just does not look cinematic at all (Not talking about this video just my experience with it) People have said that the original bmpcc looked much more like a cinema camera than the 4k and 6k and that's because of the cameras capture motion. For example red and alexa camersa have that organic film like motion just like the old bmpcc used to have but the new 4k and 6k aren't even close... Bmpcc 6k looks much more like a video and i really hate that they took the amazing motion away...

I'm curious how the color of these shots would compare if you used Resolve Color Management or ACES instead of Rec709 LUTs. I have been experimenting with Resolve Color Management (see Avery Peck's amazing video on this workflow) and am trying to steer clear of LUTs until I can learn a little more. I own the BMPCC4K but am still very jealous of the overall look of the Alexa.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Cool! I will check that out. I'm sure you'll have a lot more control with the Resolve Color or ACES, but this test was just a down-n-dirty to see how the two look straight out of camera. The Alexa is definitely nice, but it's amazing how close the Blackmagic 4k comes. After messing with it in Resolve a bit, I got them both to match pretty closely. Anyway, thanks for watching! :D

Did you guys use an ND on the BMPCC? You must have. Was it a fader Nd? Solid? High quality or not? It has tinted the whole image green vs the Alexa which looks magenta. Wish you had used the same ND on both for a fair test. The colours were totally different on both cameras throughout this test. Alexa clearly has more dynamic range and better rolling shutter though.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Oliver Kember - hi Oliver thanks for watching. We used internal ND on the Mini and B&W solid ND (not variable) on the BMPCC. They are a high quality screw on ND. When I’m actually shooting these are the NDs I use. Think of this more as a real world test. I don’t shoot with a matte box when I’m using smaller cameras as the whole point for me anyway is to have a smaller rig - I don’t think the results would be much different as I have a set of a Schneider 4x5.65 NDs and did camera test with those and they were very similar to the B&Ws.

While it looks great for the price, it’s def not just the skin tone or lighting but how the camera captures movement. The footage of the girl walking with the Alexa could be ripped almost straight from a Netflix TV show, while the footage on the right is more comparable to a low budget porno film or student film. And I think therein lies the difference. You’re paying for that look because it’s that look that feels the nicest and highest quality, and people can tell, whether consciously or subconsciously. Just rent the Alexa and call it a day, if the budget can handle it.

Thank you for the test, but two things: 1. You mentioned how sharp the bmpcc 4k is. For movies and most music videos, that's the opposite of what you want. Alexa not being too sharp is by design. I always soften my bmpcc 4k footage to look cinematic. Basically, it has to come down to 1080p levels. You're supposed to use the "soften & sharpen" Resolve plugin for that, along the midtone detail, and some blurring at 0.53. That makes the details become "thicker", that resemble better how film is supposed to look (if you're after the filmic look that is, and not the video look). Alexa does that automatically. 2. You shot the bmpcc 4k at 400 iso for the low light scenes. You said you did that to keep the field level between the two cameras, but the bmpcc is different than arri, having two native isos. They are MEANT to be used. So by not using that feature to shoot at 1600 or 3200, it's like saying "I'll test speed, but I'll block my ferrari to 60 miles per hour just to level it with my Fiat". That decision made no sense. Either a camera has a way to get a better low light than another camera, or it doesn't.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Eugenia Loli - hi Eugenia! Thanks for watching and for your comments. My Arri is still very sharp despite being cinematic. And I still put a Hollywood Black Magic filter in front of it for shooting people sometimes. But I don’t always want that look. Shooting for nature docs and the like, we want sharp. There’s a reason why manufacturers have lens test charts to see how sharp lenses are. Sharpness is definitely something I personally want a lot of the time. I don’t always want the soft vintage look. I get that it’s popular now. But it’s not always my choice. And keep in mind these tests are for reference so you can see the differences and make those personal choices. As for your second point the BMPCC actually was granier at the higher native ISO. Do some research on the dual ISOs. The higher one isn’t always cleaner. It depends how much light is in the scene. We chose the best look to make each camera look their best. Thanks again for watching and feel free to send a note if you have any other questions/thoughts/comments 😁👍

@@FilmJams Film Jams you are somewhat wrong. You shot at 400 iso and then adjusted the exposure in post to raise it. As it's raw you can change the iso value even after shooting. However Black Magic themselves specifically state that you should completely skip iso 800 and 1000 and just use 1250 as this will provide a cleaner result. There are dozens upon dozens of videos demonstrating this online as well. Shooting at 400 and pushing up two stops like you did is not an efficient use of the camera. 1250 would have been much cleaner.

You shot your test at 400 and pushed it more than a stop before you did the close-up comparison. You absolutely were in the range Black Magic would have recommended jumping to iso 1250 and many users have shown video tests where 1250 is even cleaner than 800. As to the purpose of my comment? Film Jams The WB isn’t set properly. Normally, the P4K doesn’t have that green cast at all (most of the time, it has a magenta cast, which is the opposite). The Alexa is the one well known to have slight green cast sometimes. A custom WB using a reference greycard would have been ideal. If you used simply set the WB manually by dialing the same Kelvin value on both cam... they won’t match at all (even though it should). A custom WB using a greycard will also correct the G/M shift (which every camera manages differently)

@@FilmJams The Alexa can create great images with a minimum of fuss. Lighting can be less than perfect and it still looks good without doing anything to it. BMPCC needs much better lighting, anything that goes off and the whole image goes off. Also you have to go in and really color correct it, to get it to look good. To get them to match, it requires a lot of work. I like both cameras, but saying they are the same is like saying a Porche and an Mazda are the same because both have four wheels and an engine. The money you spend on the Alexa goes into the improved tech.
@FilmJams

@@hale1471 for sure! We own both :) did we say they’re the same? I disagree about matching them. I have a customized LUT I created in a few minutes that matched them. You can see it in our Pocket 6K VS Alexa Mini video - we used basically a combo of the Buttery LUT and just a minor green adjustment and they’re very close. I’d be happy to share our settings with you if you ever need help matching them to save you some time! Now motion cadence and dynamic range are always going to look better on the Alexa sensor in my opinion. But if you have the ability to control your lighting you can keep your highlights from clipping on the Pocket.

@@hale1471 , it’s not worth the extra for the Alexa no matter how you twist and aggregate the claims. ARRI has a good relationship with most directors/producers so by default they get the upper hand. Otherwise, RED and Sony would be trailing much closer than they are now. It’s all about loyalty with directors/producers and their cinematographers in which I totally respect. On the other hand and illustratively speaking, ARRI is no different than AVID in the way they charge. ProTools is an “industry standard” only because of loyalty and familiarity but when it comes to stability, UI, and hardware support/efficiency the DAW is primitive. That’s why the company has subscriptions like Adobe. BM has yet to reveal why they stopped using Fairchild sensors (filmic sensors) but I’m pretty sure it’s because ARRI was just as butt hurt as RED with the RAW vs ProRes situation. ARRI didn’t release a digital camera until they where confident it rendered a film-like result. BM did that with a $1000-$5000 cameras and although they suffer from smaller sensor in low-light the results where enough to clearly send ARRI concerned. Also, are you comparing ProRes or RAW? Improved tech? To what extent? All I see is a larger sensor with ARRI but there maybe more. ARRI is better than BM and respectfully so but it’s not a $50,000 difference. I seriously doubt the ARRI cost more than $3000 to fabricate. It’s not a space rocket and DSLR/Mirrorless cameras likely have more advanced hardware than ARRIs cheapest option. Let’s be honest, they only charge that because they….can. Even low-budget films make ARRIs rental prices and/or prices in general make a small dint in production cost.

Not sure where you heard the Alexa Mini isn't good in Low Light, but it's the cleanest camera I've ever used in Low Light - the blacks are super clean. There's a reason it costs $50,000. This is the video I was thinking of where we compared the ISO settings on the 4k to the 6k BMPCC: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JKNDH0xVJCU.html

the sky was red the entire time with the Arri, had to be user error, i can't ccept any other reason. Also, Im sure gen 5 will handle those highlights a lot better on the pocket 4k.

Not user error. That’s how they look. But you should get an Alexa and shoot your own comparison. Would love to see you run a test.

Next time please use a color chart to grade the cameras consistently. Otherwise we have no idea how the two cameras truly look in comparison.

Mathias Tegtmeier we did use a color chart. And you can see our other videos where we match them. This video was specifically about comparing them straight out of camera. Have a good one.

@cheeeeezewizzz
@cheeeeezewizzz 5 лет назад
@@ChristianCashmir I'm aware that you didn't color match them. But it's funny that you pointed out the slight green cast of the Black Magic while accepting the HUGE magenta cast on the Arri as if it was normal. Also who cares what they see? Nobody has ever asked for a comparison without grading on RU-vid. Every video like this you see thousands of comments complaining about the lack of grading, or iso tests where they don't adjust the brightness etc. And you always see the RU-vidr making the same excuses. Oh well this test wasn't to show how the cameras actually compare. It was to show how it looks without grading. Something nobody gives a damn about in a test. You could have easily included a quick color matching grade and the video would have been more informative and made the people in your comments section much happier.

Joshua Son I’m not sure what you’re looking to do with your comment but it’s clear you have a better vision than our team, so maybe you should go do it on your channel. And maybe you’ll get a few more subscribers :) 5 is a good start!

You serious? Those lenses are not comparable
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Jay Freeman the 50mm 1.2 and the 50mm T1.3 lenses are the same optical formula. The Canon CN-E Cine Primes are rehoused L lenses. They are also color matched as all Canon L lenses are. And all lens tests we shot were between f/2.8 to f/4 where any difference in sharpness would be negligible or non-existent. So yes we are serious. Are you serious? ;)

I think the camera guy never work with both the camera professionally. BMPCC is good but ARRI Alexa is "GOD" in ARRIRAW format. I've regularly shoot & grade on BRAW & ARRIRAW. There is no chance of comparison. Do not block or erase my comment.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 2 года назад
Why would I block your comment? It's hilarious and uninformed! I want everyone to see it. I might even pin it for a week or so! You do know these shots are SOOC right? And of course I use and own both of these cameras on a daily basis - more so the ARRI. Check out my IMDB, kid. You won't be disappointed :) Latest project I did camera on is the Sundance-Winning / and now Oscar nominated documentary: "Summer of Soul" ....but what you been up?

There are still people who believe that with a BMPCC you can get videos like those of an Alexa .. Comparing any cheap camera to an Arri is like comparing a Honda Civic with a Ferrari .....
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 5 лет назад
Michele Ren I think that’s what makes a test like this fun for me anyway. Yes the ARRI is the queen bee of cams but seeing how good some of these other manufacturers are getting is pretty amazing. Will be interesting to see where cameras go from here!

@@FilmJams Excuse me if I insist but making a comparison of this kind only serves to try to convince someone that buying a BMPCC can get videos that are the same or almost the same as those of an Alexa. And we all know that it is not true.

The point of this test is not to “make them look good” it’s to show exactly what they look like straight out of camera. It’s a camera TEST not a movie.
