It was little over 2 years ago I released my comparison video of the Canon EOS C200 vs the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, which kicked off my channel in a major way. Today we get to see the continuation of that legendary comparison video with the 2 lead cameras, the Canon C70 and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.
Both Canon and Blackmagic Designs have made significant changes that help resolve the flaws many owners like myself spoke out about.

If you change the ISO and it shows there’s info there.. then that means that info is there to be pulled out no matter what ISO you change it to in post. From personally experience the C70 is insanely good at recovering shadow details. BUT it still doesn’t compete against raw. I would of preferred to see you use proper recovery methods at their best ISOs to stretch the footage to see which one breaks first. Can either use your qualifiers and luminance or the hdr wheels. Any chance you can upload those clips for me to show ya? Also, nice dance moves haha

Hey Cam! You are right but he was not testing for highlight and shadow recovery. He was testing for dynamic range. Not having RAW as the C300 III does limit recovery information. The C70 should be exposed properly in the first place.

@@robertm3951 that’s a part of the dynamic range….. that’s like me taking out all the parts that are needed for a sandwich, but never putting the sandwich together. That’s like shooting film and never getting it processed. That’s like buying paint and never painting with it. Every single show and movie you see is color graded and stretched. How can you possibly show the dynamic range of a camera without properly showing all the details and color information it retains?

Well explained, thanks. That answered all the questions that came to mind from the first part of the video. There are so many ways to tweek clips in the Resolve colour tab, but I've always been unconvinced that adjusting ISO away from native is all that useful, as you point out so well. I love the RCM/Wide Colour Gamut/HDR control method, seems like magic how it smoothly tries to keep adjustment in the output range. Edit: Should add I'm just referring to Blackmagic Dual rang sensors.

mic drop for doing that explanation. Can't beat that DGO sensor. The rolloff is of the C70 is something that you don't get with most cameras. Now Canon make the C90 Full frame and you get me for life.

Great video! Do you think if the c70 is not in your budget then the 6k pro could match footage with the canon c300 mk3 as a B cam? Or is the c70 the perfect B cam?

If you have the time to plan and time to work on grading, any camera can ultimately match any other. But there are some difference in how the colors behave. The pocket tends to skew more yellow in tone while the canons screw more to reds and magentas. The c70 is the perfect b camera because it’s literally the c300mk3 with a smaller body and media. The same exact sensor and processor. But if the c70 is not in your budget, then yes you can make the pocket camera work. but again, it has noticeably less dynamic range and different color science so you will need to put the effort in post grading to get them to match

Thanks for the review. Just wondering if you are considering a comparison between the Canon C70 & the Sony FX6, which would be closer in price to the Canon? I think a lot of videographers would be interested in that comparison as well !

p6Kpro - for better dynamic range during the day shoot at iso 800 and use HR in resolve - you will get more highlights stops if you shoot during the day the noise is not visible

If your in a pretty well lit area yes. The test was to show in more strenuous and contrast situations where you have to be mindful of the shadows and not just think about highlights. In this test the pocket was still struggling with noise in the shadows even at iso 400. So iso 800 for this scenario would create even more noise. I’ll even put a recent real world experience. I was filming a wedding a few weekends back after releasing this video. We had a situation where the ceremony was outside mid day under a open pavilion. My friend was on the pocket 6K (original not pro) at iso 800 and we even added an aputure 300d II to try and help and the pocket was still struggling on get a good shot without either clipping the highlights or loosing detail on the couple as they were in shadows. Same situation with the reception for most of the day as it was outside under a tent. The c70 did not struggle amd was able to capture both situations. And this is directly from his mouth as it was his wedding gig. He said (as the pocket owner and user) the C70 had at least 1 stop better performance than the pocket.

You get better highlight rolloff in that kind of sunlight if you shoot iso800 on the pockets. I think it was kind of unfair because you get a extra stop in the highlights at iso800

Yes but you also introduce more noise as a consequence. So you add a step and take a step back.

@@JamesJacksonFilmz if you use gen4 color science over gen5, the noise is less at that iso visually from what I’ve learned experimenting with both. Depending on how you grade you can also eliminate the noise obviously but often times in gen4 At iso800 the noise is negligible and i don’t have to touch it. I’d much rather have the extra stop as well as the more visually pleasing highlight rolloff at iso800 for Sunny scenes. I actually prefer gen4 curve more than gen5 because of noise performance straight out. With gen5 you tend to have to grade differently to get the noise levels down and in camera monitoring is clearly visually more noisy. Compare gen4 to gen5 in camera (on pocket 6k you can still use gen4 in camera. You’d have to convert to gen4 in post with the pro model) at iso800 and you will see it’s noisier on gen5.

15:09 can you just turn the contrast down in the RAW page on BMPCC6K and get smoother roll off? The principle of contrast it self is to stretch between the shadow and the highlight, so if you turn it down in RAW page it should give you smother rolloff, and try to avoid LUT conversion where each LUT has its predefine contrast and rolloff. CMIIW.

Yes you could but the same argument could be made with the C70 using the HDR wheels.

Thanks for the video! I caught that you said don't record to an ssd for the bmpcc6k. Is there an issue recording to ssd? So far, i've recorded to it 3 or 4 times with no issues so far. Did it end up becoming less reliable over time?

Hi man. Thank you for your comments. In regards to the SSDs. I don’t recommend them because of their need of the usb-c port to record which has a great chance to have a point of failure. Point of failure is more likely whenever you add chains to the signal link. I’ve been on multiple projects where the ssd would either stop working mid recording, files were corrupted or not recorded even when the record light and button where flashing red. My only recommendation is Cfast 2.0 cards. They maybe expensive but not as expensive as a client demanding a refund because the files were lost or corrupted. I know many are probably going to Jump into this comment saying “I have never experienced these things don’t listen to him”. Which I say good for them, but I and my fellow film buddies have been burned too many times with using the SSD route.

@@JamesJacksonFilmz Hey man, thanks for the response. I completely understand and that makes sense. I do recall shooting and having the USB slip out of the camera. When I put it back in it was good to go. Your experiences are valid and it is definitely good to know. I would much rather pay an upfront cost to be safe than risk it. Just have to save up for more of those cards. Lol Thanks again sir!

I have to agree with James. As someone who has had their usb-c fail, CFast is the move. I just bought one for 120$ for 256GB. Trust me. Not worth the headache

Thanks man. Sigma 18-35 in the sample videos (same as the pocket 6K pro) the lens during the breakdown is the Irix 15mm t2.6 Cine lens.

I sort of get the comparison, but it also seems unfair. The price difference between the 6K Pro and the C70 is the same between the C70 and the C500 Mark II. Does the C70 win, yes by a mile, because it's 2-1/2 times the cost. But you could add the battery grip and use the new DJI gimbal with Lidar, then the cameras are functional equal and your still $2K cheaper than purchasing the C70. At it's price point, the real competition for the 6K Pro is something like Panasonic S5

Hey man. Thanks for the comments I hear what you are saying but even with the additional gear you brought up it’s still not functionally the same. With the battery grip you may have an hour and a half to two hours of battery life but you also then have to factor in the cost of battery replacements and charging. The c70 with just what comes in the box is still at least 30% longer than the pocket with the battery grip and if you were to buy the nano battery (which is basically the cost of just the 6ks battery grip not including extra or charging) you don’t have to charge at all it covers a full day of shooting. Also the NDs are still better on the c70 than the 6K pro and let’s you shoot wide open at the native iso vs still likely to compromise on how much you can open your iris with the 6K pro. And other areas like dynamic range, cheaper media, better audio system and a variable Mount system still put the C70 even if you factor in the things you said. The c70 is not better because of its price range it’s better because functionally it’s fits more shooting environments than the 6K pro and there’s areas where it just technically better. But this doesn’t mean the 6K is a bad camera and I make that clear in this video. The c70, IMO, is just definitively better in my eyes.

@@JamesJacksonFilmz I agree with everything above. I would add that for my videography business, we are considering getting into cinema cameras. I like both of these cameras. But the question isn't which is the better camera. The C70 is certainly the better camera. The question is one of budget. Can we justify the cost of the C70 over the Pocket 6K Pro? I would prefer the C70, but I don't know if it does enough to change the bottom line. Does that make sense?
