Hello everyone and welcome back to the Shed!
In this video I will be carrying out a slightly overdue replacement of the brake fluid.
The car has been warning me of the need to replace the fluid for a couple of months every time I start it so it is about time I get it done.

Great video! Although the Haynes manual says to bleed the system from the bleed screws in the following order: a) Right-hand rear brake b) Left-hand rear brake c) Right-hand front brake d) Left-hand front brake Which is mirrored from what you were doing.

Unusual, whilst I don’t usually use Haynes manuals and prefer to use the factory alternative, bleeding the longest line first, ie. the one further at from the master cylinder is the recommended practice on any vehicle and not just the 1series! Naturally on a right hand drive car, where the master cylinder is mounted in front of the driver (nor always the case though) the near side rear would be the furthest away! 👍🏻

Nice video sir...always amused me why BMW thinks that the fluid is useless after two years ....mind you as i also found out on my 320 ...BMW thinks a lot of things need changing when they are not broken...had a Waring for the DPF that said "Replacement required" and after hours of digging and finding out about BMW DIS ...i found that there is a counter that triggers after so many Kilometres regardless if its faulty or not ..nice bill if you take it to the main garage too....Needless to say it was perfectly fine and re-gen'd no problem after a reset . :)

Great video once again Kev. Just have a quick question regarding this kit as I bought it last week. I pump up the vacuum before undoing the bleed nipple and the bleed nipple adapter seems to fit snug but as soon as I crank the bleed nipple, the vacuum just goes to 0 like the is an air leak at the bleed nipple. I have tried it without the adapter and just with the hose but still no joy. I double checked all the seals around the hand pump and the brake fluid collector container and all seems fine. What would you do in this scenario? A different bleed nipple adapter or a smaller hose? Would appreciate your help, thanks. Liam

Can you simply add more break fluid if it’s low. My mechanic said it was low so I’m just curious?

The fluid is low because your pads have worn. As the pads wear, the piston has to push further out of the caliper to take up the slack, this in turn means that the fluid level drops in the reservoir. Simply top it up to the recommended level but be sure to remove some fluid when changing the pads in the future.

Hello again mate! When bleeding your brakes is your handbrake on or off? Would you also bleed your clutch at the same time or when would you bleed your clutch?

It makes no difference if the handbrake is on or off to be fair. The handbrake is totally independent of the hydraulic system and is cable operated.

By completely emptying your brake fluid there’s a chance air will get into the abs system and you don’t want that to happen!!

so, can you use this same concept and bleed gun when bleeding brakes on the SRAD?

Yeah, should be able to. The Tokico 6 pots can be a real pain to bleed properly though!

No idea! 2 hours labour probably even though it would only take less than 1 hour! They would charge 15 minutes labour just to reset the indications most likely! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I have that same bleeder kit you are using, I saw some forums on where people use a Motive bleeder and they do a vacuum from the reservoir, is there any difference between that procedure you are doing and the Motive bleeder one? Just curious! I found your procedure more simple and straight forward.

@@josearroyo4575 yeah what the one from the reservoir does it use air, normally from a compressor although you can use a tyre valve, to force the fluid through the line. I haven't ever had much real success with those personally though so prefer my method. I also have a vacuum bleeder that can be fitted to a compressor which is also highly effective.
