Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and welcome to another video with the lovely little 123d!
In this video I will be fixing the horrendous black death that is commonly associated with failure of the sealing washer at the base of the diesel injectors.
As an added bonus, and as I already have the injectors out, I figured that it would be prudent to go a few steps further and replace the aged valve cover gaskets too whilst I was in there.
As you will no doubt see, this is quite an involved process but is more than doable at home by anyone with a degree of competence and the correct tools for the task ahead.
Whilst on the topic of tools, links to all of the tools that I used in the video can be found below.
Injector Seal Removal Tool: ebay.us/X0byYP
Diesel Injector Extractor Set: Puller: ebay.us/QWDdFA
Diesel Injector Seat Cutting Tool: ebay.us/VbxxRm
The consumables used in this video are linked below:
Genuine BMW Valve Cover Gasket Set: ebay.us/sZPhqM
Genuine Bosch Copper Injector Sealing Washers: ebay.us/aME7GL
Genuine BMW Camshaft Position Sensor O-Ring Seal: ebay.us/tRuUvh
Genuine BMW EGR Bypass Pipe Seal: ebay.us/IdSXP5
Inlet Manifold Gaskets (Ignore the little Steel plug, this is only required for swirl flap removal): ebay.us/e9s7r7

Excellent video. Thanks for going to the time and trouble to show how fixing problems on a diesel BMW doesn't have to be daunting. Maybe not easy but certainly not impossible for the average interested person.

Kev i am an academic and i have to say the video content and step by step process is probably the best i have ever seen on RU-vid, and has been exactly what i needed to see and feel for assurances. Lately and after paying massive repair bills i am still no further forward with a massive fuel consumption issue on my e92 320d M sport. The garage missed the fuel injectors on bank 1 and 2 leaking, i have got an app to program the injectors called AP200 Maxi and will buy some refurbed injectors bosh and do it myself as you have showed apart from the programming to save myself a £600 bill without the parts. I am so thankful Kev for your knowledge, skills and expertise you should be commended on your efforts for showing us what to do. 🏁

There’s one thing worth mentioning about injectors seals, both sides are different and tapered side goes facing down otherwise they would definitely leak, normally people don’t realise this and keep cutting the bore thinking there’s something wrong with seat and end up deepening it , there are some brush cleaners to get rid of the burn crap, also 3 bolts at the back are tricky to get too that’s also worth pointing. Rest good work to work on small 1 series front comparatively to 5 series, also injectors don’t need programming, i have replaced on most BM engines, they work fine , programming is just to injector number in system. But spray command doesn’t look for number to allocate fuel. So people don’t get scared by injector programming.

Are the 3 bolts at the back straight down or angled in towards the front of the car?

Wow. Was about to buy an X1 leaking diesel in the engine area on ebay but have watched that through. Unless you're able to come round and fix it I think I'll let the auction run. Personable and educational video. The only question I'm left with is how far back down the classic car route I need to go before the complexity of the mechanics meets my capacity to understand them. I'm thinking 1940's which is well before my date of birth...

Is the oil on the injectors caused by the 4 seals on the rocker cover leaking?
@beingpresent5978
@beingpresent5978 Год назад
Very well documented and great job done, great comments, concise and to the points, massive well done!!! By the way how did you clean the injector port? Just using the injector seat cutter, Hoover and paper towel? Did you use any liquid to clean the cam cover? Thanks
@NickTubeless
@NickTubeless Год назад
Almost there with the help of your guidance. Just have to cut the injector seats & refit. Turns out my swirl flap rod was snapped with the far flap (cylinder 4) stuck in closed position. The actuator was rounded off so couldn't open or close anyway. Relucantly I've chosen to delete the swirl flaps. The EGR pipe was almost completely blocked at the inlet manifold end. All cleaned up so hoping the car will be happy albeit without swirl flaps. My cam cover gaskets were hard & brittle & snapping as removed. Obviously leaking, oil was getting into the injector cylinders as well as weeping around the sides of the cover. The most difficult bit of the job was disconnecting the electrics, especially to the throttle body & getting the manifold out & back in. Will delete the EGR next. Too much gunk going through the system.
@koysiimiah3320
@koysiimiah3320 11 месяцев назад
When you deleted your swirl flaps did you have to do some coding or is it a case of buying the gaskets with the aluminium delete tube thing and just installing it? Did you buy the injector removal tool, the copper washer removal tool as well? I'm trying to decide if buying those tools will be more or less the same labour cost as my rocker cover is leaking but will want to replace with new cover and gasket, Injector seals and gaskets, egr seal, swirl flap delete kit with gaskets.
@NickTubeless
@NickTubeless 11 месяцев назад
@@koysiimiah3320 No coding required. I bought genuine gaskets from BMW for the cam cover, injector seals & inlet manifolds. The swirl flap delete kit had inlet manifold gaskets but I only used the aluminium delete tube thing. Didn't use a special tool to remove the injector seals, 3 of the 4 came out with the injector, the last one I managed to dislodge with a long screw driver & sucked out with a thin tube connected to an old vacuum cleaner. I did buy & use the cutting tool to clean up the injector seats. MPG has improved but the feed from the EGR & manifold ports were seriously gunked up, so gas flow will be much better. Get the occasional lull in pick up from idle which may be down to no swirl flaps but when moving the car runs like normal. It was quite a scary job to undertake but ultimately very rewarding & must have saved a big labour bill. As said the tricky bit was disconnecting the electrics.

@@koysiimiah3320 I made a slide hammer to remove the injectors. I can imagine a slide hammer is a must have.
@koysiimiah3320
@koysiimiah3320 11 месяцев назад
@@NickTubeless the whole process sounds so scary my main worry is dropping something inside the engine 😅 I tend to drop screws and bolts alot when working on my car. Will have to buy magnetised tools and bits. All in I'm looking at a cost of about £250 with rocker cover ridex brand, gasket, injector leak off seal, injector copper washer, swirl flap delete with gaskets and the tools injector puller, injector seat cutter (is it 17mm?), copper washer remover just in case, e torx bits and torque wrench 5-25Nm. When you used the seat cutter, did you use the thick grease he used to catch the carbon or not bother with the grease? As I'll need to add that on the list too. Once I've ordered all the parts I'm going to give myself 2 days. Will have to drive it inside my 1 car garage which just about fits the BMW X1 I'll be doing the job on and complete it. I've been quoted £600+ for the whole job.

Great work 👍🏼 my 520d n47 started to leak around the injectors, also the rocker cover I think is leaking from a the first injector can this be glued? If not how much do you think this type of work will cost me… amazing video by the way top class I’ve seen so far!!!

Hi Kev, Great video, doing this exact job this weekend due to the guys do did my timing chain cracking the cover, and now found 2 injectors blowing. Timing chains been fine for over a year and I've lived with the slight leak but time to fix. Must admit didn't think id have to take the inlet manifold off as well but after watching feel much better prepared and have bought the cutting tool. Hoping the injectors won't be too stuck surly they had to be removed to do the chain but do have a tool I can borrow. Quick one, is there meant to be a rubber o ring on the injector as well? Did i see it still in the head in your vid? Also are they 1.5mm seals or 2mm, noticed some have a raised part of 1.5mm with a outer of 1mm. Mines a 2010 LCI so does that make a difference? Or and when you started the car, the engine seemed to shake a bit, is that normal or did you find your engine mounts were shot, don't think mine shakes side to side that much but could be wrong. Thanks again subbed.

Superb. Do you intend to keep with the swirl flaps when you replace the inlet manifold? My oil level has been creeping up slowly due to a diesel leak and I've just replaced the gasket ring copper washers on bottom of the injectors. There was the same gunk of diesel you had - maybe in my case the camshaft-cover injector profile seals have been letting that fuel seep in? Your video to the rescue.

So Kev I watched the entire video. I have also changed my injector washers as well as the valve cover. As you mentioned we need to crank it intermittently for 20 sec . Between these intervals, how many seconds should I leave the battery to rest? My engine is also not starting after gasket replacement so I am afraid I may not burn the starter motor by cranking the engine for too long. Just need your tough word if I should be courageous and crank it regardless for 15-20 sec until the engine fires up? Waiting for your reply . Thanks Kev
@KevsShed
@KevsShed Год назад
There’s no hard and fast rule to this, but starter motors do get incredibly hot as they draw huge amounts of current. I would crank and leave for approx 20 further seconds before trying again.
