Hi everyone,
Welcome back to the channel.
In this video we will be carrying out a complete replacement of the rear discs, pads and wear sensor on the BMW 1 series. This process is identical for all of the one series models with the only real difference across the range being the size of the disc. The process however is largely the same.
I hope that you find the video informative. If you enjoyed it then please don't forget to like, subscribe and comment for more videos from Kev's Shed.
See you all again real soon for the next video!

Another handy tip. There’s a cylinder under the handbrake gaiter that pushes in to release the handbrake fully.

Really helpfull and interesting video. Can I ask, is there a reason as to why no copper grease or similar wasn't used?
@KevsShed

Because it’s not required and for some reason it seems that everyone thinks it is! It’s not specified in any factory manual that I own and I don’t expect it to ever be!

How can I find out the torque wrench settings for the callipers on my series 1 E88 2012 good video keep it up very helpful 👍
@cbpriv
@cbpriv 4 года назад
Be sure to use medium strength threadlocker after cleaning the bolts, that way they will stay on, even if you cant find the right torque values and just snug them up, dont put greace on the bolts, thats what I did on my 1 series.

@KevsShed

If I recall correctly, the two calliper bolts are removed with a 16mm spanner and the retaining bolt on the brake disc is removed with a 7mm hex socket or Allen key 👍🏻

On brake disc that are rusted on its easyer to hit between were the studs go when taking the disc off.
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 4 года назад
Possibly, but I would advise that you do that on a car that actually has studs as hitting one of the studs with a hammer is going to damage it!

I tried to take the discs off and I ended up rounding the nut that holds the disc. How do I get the disc off now?
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 года назад
This has happened to me in the past, If it is a disc that you are going to discard then use an angle grinder to remove the head of the bolt. Then you can remove the disc and the stud left behind will usually be easily removed with a decent set of grips.
@jacobdevine885
@jacobdevine885 4 года назад
Sorry I went to do this today and found it hard to get to the back bolts? I have a 1 series 5 door it looks relatively the same ? Except it's a solid disc not vented. Can I ask what you used to get the bolts out? A 16mm 6 sided Hex fits Do you use a 16mm 3/8 drive hex socket with a universal joint and a 3/8 ratchet ? Just dont know what tools I need to get to the bolts Wanna do these for myself obviously safely but have a go. Can you list the tools you used please I'd be a massive help ?
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 4 года назад
One is really easy but the other is part covered by the end of the arm, I used a UJ to get to that one. The job is the same even if the discs are solid 👌🏻

Very good but I would of copper greased the back of the pads
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 года назад
A lot of people would but it’s a daft practice that has absolutely no benefit at all!
@AT90_
@AT90_ 2 года назад
Most pads now come with a material backing plate which mitigates the need for it on the bad of the pads. However it’s good practice to apply anti seize on any contact points to prevent them seizing in. If the hub has been copper slipped the disc would have been much easier to remove.
