BMW 1200GS refitting the centre stand after spraying

This is one of the most difficult jobs to do on the bike, even though it looks the easiest. The centre stands suffer a lot of abuse, being under the bike, and soon look very second rate. Removal is easy and gives you the opportunity to sand, prime and respray and at the same time grease and oil the springs. Then all you have to do is reassemble....piece of cake, but then you will probably give up the will to live! But this method works, even I am very surprised.

Simple trick is the following; partially install the left side of the center stand (bolt and bushing). Now, right side install springs to bike and then to stand. Now, with the leverage offered by the right-side center-stand arm opposite of the left side already partially attached, pull with right side of stand and line up right side bolt hole, easily insert the bolt and thread in by hand a few turns. Now tighten everything with torx ratchet. Should take less than 2 minutes. Done it many times.

Clever bit of lateral thinking and ingenuity , what with Normski’s solution to the alternator belt trick (BMW will hate him for this fix as you don’t need their £200 tool) and now the washer spring solution, this is one 70 year old genius I’d like on my side on any long bike tour, his fixes can be done roadside, that’s the beauty of what he does; where has he been all these years, more of the same please.

When I bought my used 2016 RT from my local BMW dealer it was spotless apart from the centre stand. The salesman offered to have it painted which after watching your video I am glad he did. I now make a point of cleaning it every time the bike is washed. If it gets into a condition were it needs repainting I'll invest in some masking tape and do it on the bike. An excellent video. Not had the pleasure of working on my bike yet as it is still under warranty but am building a list of the tools I am going to need thanks to your vids.
@normski3091

Absolutely right........I feel exactly the same even though, or because I have done it. Prevention is better than ever having to take it off, and an hour with masking tape is better than a thousand without! Mine needs doing now....so I have just purchased a warm air dryer, £49 from Amazon instead of £120+ from bike suppliers, bottle of ACF50 and and 'atomising' spray for £7 instead of a compressor and airgun! Is it worth a video?? Let me see how it turns out!

@@normski3091 I meant to comment how brilliant the washer trick is! Regards the bushings: I got some info from a mechanic friend: you have to go in with a thin hacksaw, cut the old bush longitudinally, and pry it out. In the last step for the inner spring, you could have looped a closed zip-tie around the hook of the inner spring and pulled the opposite end of the tip-tie with your screw driver. That would have effectively given you a longer hook to work with (to free up your other hand). Then you could have guided the real hook into the hole with your free hand and pliers. How about staring over to try it? 😄

Here is my trick Attach the spring to the frame as seen in the video. Get hold of a strong S shaped hook. Now grab a ratchet strap (the kind you use to strap your bike to a trailer) Attach the S shaped hook to the free end of the spring. Attach one end of the strap to the S hook, and the other to the rear wheel. Take up the slack in the strap and activate the ratchet mechanism. Once you have stretched the spring, lever the end into place with a stout screwdriver. Remove the hook and ratchet strap. All done

I had a similar problem refitting the handbrake shoe springs on a discovery 3 After hours of struggling, I used a 5' steel bar, I put bailer twine on the spring U, secured the twine to the bar, secured the bar ( in the ground) and levered the spring open with no effort at all. Leverage is the answer here, obviously you'd have to work in a more confined space.

Would you do a video on the stand you use and give some details about it? I’ve seen a similar hydraulic version that folds away flat when not being used but with 265kg of machine in the air, yours looks more solid and robust. Loving the videos, keep them coming👍
@normski3091
@normski3091 4 года назад
WoodNotts. That is a good idea. I bought my Big Blue lift 4-5 years ago specifically to build a BMW cafe racer. But it fitted my 2012 RT perfectly. I drove down to Tamworth one afternoon and brought it back with me together with a wheel ‘lock’. The inventor who builds the complete lifts was a great guy and explained everything. His web site is: on-bike.com/motorcycle-lifts My son’s 2005 GS is so fast to fix and lift as was my old RT. However when I wheeled it under the RT1200LC there was a glaring problem and I notice that they do not advertise it for that bike anymore, BUT I found a solution.....I should email them with pictures, or better still a RU-vid video as you suggest🤔. The problem is that the exhaust on the new RT’s run under the bike, not as previous to the sides🤷‍♂️. That would mean lifting ON the exhaust, not a good idea. I milled down a block of aluminium that fits the engine and it lifts perfectly. No where near as fast as a full bench bike lift but that would have filled my garage and I had two bikes (the cafe racer) at the time. Then I thought about a hidden lift buried into the floor, which would have been perfect.....but just check out the cost.😱. Yes I will do a video!

Thinking outside the box, but wouldn't be simpler putting the spring on the bike, attach it to the stand and then bolting the stand to the bike? Surely there is more leverage to be had on the stand, and 1 bolt and then pull the other side to then slot the bolt. I have never done this, but will be soon.

@normski3091
@normski3091 4 года назад
Hi Richard, I released the springs by removing the bolts that hold the centre stand when the stand is up and the springs not under great tension. When you do the spring trick install the outer big spring on its own, then, believe it or not you can slide the inner spring through the centre once the washers are out. Hook on one end and I used a mole wrench to grab hold of the centre spring hook and pull it into position, hard but it works🤗
