Hi
This car was suffering from fumes entering the cabin.
This is a common issue on the BMW M57TU engine, the 3 liters diesel, this also found on the 5 and 3 series.
So, if you are getting fumes inside the cabin, you most likely have the same problem...
Follow me on this video to find out the issue, and how to repair it.
MAIN TORQUE SETTINGS:
(This settings are only for the M57TU, judge or find the torques yourself if working on a different engine code.)
Intake manifold on cylinder head - M8=22Nm, M7=15Nm, M6=10Nm
Valve cover all bolts - 10Nm
Exhaust manifold to engine block - 23Nm
EGR pipe/bracket to manifold - 15Nm
Manifold to turbo - 50Nm
Injectors - 9Nm
Fuel rail return (Banjo bolt) - 25Nm
Hope you enjoy the video.
Any questions or comments, please put them below.
Like always, thank you for watching!
P.S. - I ended up road test the car later on the same day...
I drove the car with the issue for so long, that I forgot how bad actually was... the car performed way better than before, smoother gear changes etc... a completely different car!
So, if you believe you have this issue, get it repaired soon rather than later!
Don't forget to replace the air and cabin filters!!!!!!

@livey oone I have also looked into that but I wanted to avoid it as much as possible going under the car because it doesn't get you much room access to the exhaust manifold when you remove the turbo.

Yeah.. Back in my Volvo 244DL days, Haynes was the go-to :) Nowadays, though.. I recently bought a Haynes BMW online-manual when I was about to repair the automatic leveling on my 2004 530d Touring. Only to find a statement in that part of the manual saying that anything involving ALC needs coding, so I should go to BMW with it. It turned out the actual air-compressor was the culpit so I replaced it myself. It did not involve any coding... I ended up lowering the car 10mm using Inpa, but that had nothing to do with fixing the ALC.

I agree, very nice job, I like LM's style, respect for a glovless mechanics:) I must praise my self, I cleaned evap on my car today, with my mothers garden pump sprayer for bugs and stuff, with a hoe cut of a water level, managed to make foam by shaking it and turning sideways to take some falls air, I used cheap 10% Asepsol from a pharmacy, it is a killer. I am not a cheep guy just it was Sunday and out of town:) Question for you guys. Did you ever work on intake manifold of MB diesel? I own W211T E220 CDI 2005. for 10 months now, bought it very cheep in Swiss, with 400K Km but I wouldn't give it half of that. I had limp home mode few weeks ago on my vacation, after black smoke down the road and hesitations to shift and run on around 2000rpm. I unplugged EGR and by now everything is running great, there is check engine light thou. I am waiting for a friend wit diagnostics to come back from vacation to plug it on. Today I tried to take EGR out and no way, I just turned it 10 degrees clockwise. After I screwed back bolts half way and drew wife and kid around the countryside all evening, rev it up and nothing, it did not come out at all. EGR cable was plugged first 5min, than I unplugged it again because people were turning around:) I hate to use hammer for the job, any other ideas, maybe to spray intake with 20$ liqui moly decarb first? One more thing, sorry I made it long like LM's videos:) ...what is your opinion on taking out swirl flaps and unplugging EGR...bypassing them?...as I figured I need 2 resistors, 2,2Kohm for EGR and 4,7 Kohm for swirl flaps motor, all 0,5W ...which wires are I know by position on a plug, but I would not like to damage something in ECU, not sure signal wire is connecting what, feed or ground, I am a bit confused there:) And I am not sure if it is good or bad, what will happen to a PDF or catalytic converter? In my country exhaust regulations are not strict for around 5 more years for sure. Regards and thank you for a response!

@@dzodaj Hi Sorry for the late reply... but your comment was flagged as possible spam.... maybe because is so long...😉😋😂😂😂 If you want to go down the root of disable swirl and EGR, better do it on the ecu software/maps... the swirl flaps however, you can possible get away with it by remove them and disconnect the lever... and leave everything plugged in... Buddy great video, but why did you do so much extra work getting the injectors out and the valve cover off? I've done this job over 50 times. There are 3 rubbers in the bottom of the airfilter housing as you could see in your video. As you get those out you can acces the 3 turbo bolts. Takes about 1/3 of the time and you'll need less parts! 😘

For some reason this video came back onto my feed! Anyway, I thought I'd add a note about checking something before you go into this relatively complicated process. Try and get hold of a cheap borescope and look at the exhaust manifold while the engine is running. If I'd done this I would have seen that my manifold was already cast iron and that the manifold to turbo flange ring clamp was loose! I could have saved all that work! Tightening the clamp ring would not be easy, but easier and cheaper than taking the top of the engine off...

amazing video! 16:25 where you say quick tip, under the airflow meter there's a pipe for the breather filter, can I ask where was it connected to? I'm struggling to find info on that part. I basically have cabin fumes and smoke comes from around that area, the pipe I mentioned is covered in soot and just under the airfilter as well.I suspect some blockage in the ccv system or head cover gasket Exhaust manifold(cast iron) and turbo are nice and clean. imgur.com/cZC6XU0 imgur.com/J3axOiL

Hi If I am not mistaken, that's the crank case breather... remove the filter, and see if you have the newer type one, and not the loo roll type... Hope that helps... Thank you for watching and for your comment! 👍👍👍

@@LMAutoRepairs ah yes, sorry I should have mentioned I have genuine vortex type, which I took off on Sunday and it's clean, I suspect the pipe or the pipeline are blocked, the only parts around there that have soot. very odd. Thanks for you reply! :)

@@TeamFreemans Yes... a bit odd... Check also that the EGR pipe, which comes from around that area, is not leaking... I would inspect it with the engine running...😉

LM Auto repairs great how to. For future ref if your willing to work blind and want to save time, you can replace the exhaust manifold without removing inlet and cam cover. 5 and 7 series. Its a bit awkward but can be done. Bmw had a recall for these breaking up an going in the turbo.

How do they justify a few washers and a rubber gasket costing more than a metal manifold that has to be Machined? The car industry and insurance company's are just as bad, just pick prices out of their backsides.

LM Auto Repairs this is true but a few years ago I had to replace the lambda sensors on my old ford ST170 the price was so ridiculous on all parts for that car just because it had an ST badge that I actually bought lambda sensors for a Jaguar which I think we're less than a third of the price? I cut the plugs off and replaced them with the plugs off my old sensors and bingo worked a treat :-)
@tommyt4062
@tommyt4062 5 лет назад
I guess this is actually what you were saying but a 7 series BMW and an old ford focus are not really in the same league? But yes, BMW or ST they don't care, it's not a standard badge which lets them jump up the prices :-(
