Modern turbos are wear items, so they need to be replaced at about 80-90K miles. Here is Part 1 of how we do it at CarHavn. This is an overview of the job with the installation location.
IMPORTANT: BMW does not make the turbo for the N20/N26 engine. They get from Mitsubishi. The dealer will try and sell you the job with a re-boxed, re-branded, overpriced turbo from Mitsubishi in a BMW box with a markup of thousands of dollars. We have seen the invoices!
Also very important to replace the coolant and oil lines, and finish the job with a turbo additive to prevent it from spinning dry on initial startup.
