Great question. You don't have to remove the whole engine, just remove the 20 or 30 bolts and oil pan should come off. thats only possible on 5 and 7 series, good luck if you have a 3-series.

don't have those bmw models here in the states, but if pan is not coming out, then you are missing a screw. Check again but don't try to force out. once all screws have been removed, pan only needs a tug and it falls out.

Sounds like you need to replace your valve cover gaskets. Oil seep through these worn out gaskets on the side and rear and drip down to the hot headers which produces smoke. That would be my best bet. Let me know what you find out.

X5's are awesome cars. As with any other part, oil pan gaskets wear out due to the oil, heat and rubber involved.

The oil is leaking on my X5 2001. The car is running and has not stop on me just yet. Right now, the car is sitting in my street. I notice the leak on Friday but I thought it was water but it is not. I drove it today but it has not stop on me just yet. So right now, I'm going to bring it to my mechanic who I trust on Monday to have it checked out. Why do the oil pan gaskets ware out after years? I thought they are build to last long?

I got my problem fixed. Luckly the oil was not the problem. Instead coolant was leaking out on my expansion tank, so that had to be replaced as well as the AUX thermostat and the main hose where the expansion tank goes to. Also, I had to replaced the hose where the oil goes as well as the engine thermostat. My BMW specialist did all the repairs and charged me 720 dollars. While the dealer wanted 2,000 dollars. It took a day and a half for my car to get fixed.

Also, my dad had the oil leak on his Avalon, kept driving it until the car stopped on him. So what my dad had to do was replace the engine. Which was costly. I do not want that to happen to my BMW X5 which will cost like 5,000 off the bat to replace the engine. I do not want that to happen to my X5. Is the oil pan gasket? B/C, oil it not leaking in the middle, or the side only on the bottom. Reply back. PLS. Thank you.

I have a BMW e39 525tds, the engine is in the car and i removed all bolts and the oil pan still doesn't move and don't come loose :(

I have a 2001 BMW 525i. I intend to use the Gunk Motor Flush and will need to remove the oil pan to clean out the gunk as it won't drain (100k miles). I am assuming that this video is compatible with my car (stock) and it is an e39, please correct me if I am wrong? Should I also replace the oil pan gasket as a precaution when I do this?

I tried to get a gasket for the oil level sensor @ O'Reillys & Napa auto parts but both stores didn't know what I was talkin about. Do you know part # or exact name by any chance?

I have a leak in my 540i and at times I can smell burning oil and smoke even came out from under the car once. Could it be this gasket?
@TheKurtTribute
@TheKurtTribute 11 лет назад
Im not sure, I can run my hand along the valve cover and there isn't any oil. Also it smells worse and only smokes when the engine is running at high RPM's

Very helpful video. Do you happen to have a link or know of one to guide me on replacement of an oil pan gasket for an 05' BMW X5. Thank you!

Does the oil pick up screen come out so I can clean it and make sure there is no shave metal or little pieces of the guides in there? Otherwise you go through all that trouble of changing guides and still have little pieces flying around maybe.

Do I have to take the engine out the car or there is a way to change the oil pan n gaskets without removing the entire engine

How do you replace the upper oil pan gasket on a 740il
@SamFisherK
@SamFisherK 11 лет назад
Yeah, you were right. I missed 2 screws that was inside gear box... but I had another problem when oil pan came loose. It still not coming out because of traverse and steering parts... so i had to rise the engine a bit ant take down traverse. that was a lot of work man.

I know what you mean. I held the engine up with engine hoist and just dropped the whole front suspension. Hope you put some silicone on the corners when installing pan back. Would really suck if you have oil leaks once its put all back together. Good job.
@SamFisherK
@SamFisherK 11 лет назад
bimmermerchant I put some silicone and now i don't have any oil leaks from the gasket, but now i did something wrong with the oil meter tube.. I have oil leak from that hole where oil pan and oil meter tube connects... I know i am missing something. how to fix this problem? do i need some sort of gasket there too? but for now i put some silicone there too

When tightening the lower oil pan bolts, what pattern do you use? Front to back, middle to outer ends? Can you put a small bead of sealant all the way around, or just in the corners? Thanks.
@bimmermerchant
@bimmermerchant 9 лет назад
+Christian Chavez First off, we recommend hand tightening. Going from corner to corner then opposite side seems to work fine. No sealant would be necessary if tighten to specs. Don't over tighten because you run the risk of breaking bolt head

Do you have a video on timing the M62tub44? If I have my crank and cams locked down, do I still need to retime the vanos? Pulled my oil pan because I heard the chain and it looks like I'm doing a guide job.
@bimmermerchant
@bimmermerchant 9 лет назад
Vince Hodge Sorry no video for timing work. If you haven't done this type of work on a bmw, we recommend you consult a good independent bmw specialist in your area. Not a easy task and special toos required.

If I cant do it myself, the car will become a parts car. I don't have a job and I'm trying to keep it under 700.

So if I had a stripped oil pan bolt (cannot drain oil) do I basically do what you did here to remove it (obviously I'll need to drill out the bolt or something) but will all I need is the lower oil pan or the whole thing?
@bimmermerchant
@bimmermerchant 10 лет назад
Stripped bolt is never good. You would need to drain oil by removing the oil level sensor which is held by three 10mm bolts. Once oil is drained, remove all the 8mm bolts holding the lower oil pan and remove it. Then drill the bolt. However, most likely you will need to replace your whole oil pan since the bolt threads are damaged as well. Those are the bad news. Good news is that we have part for you available. check out our website.

bimmermerchant well the thing is the plug is tight in there and does not leak but i cannot get it out to change the oil. do you think the plug is bad and if i pry it out i can replace it? or can i just drain it through the sensor and do it like that until i find a new lower oil pan replacement (or do i need to replace the whole thing?) lots of questions haha any help would be great

I have a BMW 740i 2001 I notice some oil drips around oil pan is this common?
@bimmermerchant
@bimmermerchant 9 лет назад
David Falcon An an owner of a BMW, you will soon realize that oil leaks are common especially with this engine. Now lets not confuse drips with puddles of oil. Also, notice how often it drips and how much. A few drops here and there is normal, however, if you notice that in a coupe days of your car being parked, there is a large amount of oil then you need to get under the car and try to pin point where its leaking from. Replacing lower oil pans on these engines is not hard and would recommend it.

I changed this gasket and my valve cover gaskets and still have a leak. Doesn't this car have an upper oil pan gasket? Can it be changed without complete remove of the subframe on a 98 740il?
