Hi Edwin It is not easy as it is in an awkward location and you have to remove a lot of parts to get to it, but it is absolutely doable. It will be worth it when done and if you get a chance clean it up well and restore it (shown in my last video) it will be worth the extra work when you see the final result. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Much appreciated. 🤝

Hello nice video, are you able to torque the bolts properly using this method which is raising the engine. Seems ever other DIY drops the subframe instead about 5 inches to make room. thank you.
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 3 года назад
If you can drop the subframe I would go with this method but if you chose my method you can still torque the bolts but it is easier if the subframe is dropped. My last video shows the installation of the upper sump with the subframe completely removed

Nearly 2 years and still not fininshed😁. Part time work obviously when I have spare time. If I was doing it full time it will be months rather than years

do you think maybe it would be better just to remove the engine completely?
@TheKeenMechanic

Yes, absolutely agree, if I was doing it again I would remove the engine but I understand not everyone has the facilities to do it. Thanks for watching

In your opinion, If you have a lift and plan on dropping the subframe to do this job, do you have to drop the sub frame completely? Or can you just lower the subframe a little bit and keep the oil pump on the block to remove the oil pan upper? Im debating about starting this job, but really dont want to have to tear apart my front suspension.
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 2 года назад
Having a lift is great, I wish I had one. You will need to drop the whole subframe as there is no space for the upper sump to come out. It will be best to drop it and you might find it beneficial and do some oil cleaning if never done before. Unfortunately you will have to do wheel alignment after that. Hope this helps

can you explain the purpose of the shims that you put on the engine mount studs... is it because you don’t want to rely on the hoist?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 3 года назад
Hi Dino That is correct. Just in case the engine crane fails, but also to give me more height as the space is very tight against other parts. Hope this helps

@@TheKeenMechanic What is the size of those spacers, that would be helpful
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 3 года назад
@@gehinarsch Hi buddy. The spacers were about 40mm tall and need to acomodate the 10mm bolt from the engine mount. It is better to have the internal hole a bit wider than 10mm to have a bit more room to play with and for easier installation. If I was to make them now would be 40mm tall and 12mm diameter of hole

I just picked up a 1998 740i. The upper oil pan is cracked as the previous owner hit a dirt embankment. In your video what do you feel is absolutely required to remove to replace the upper pan? What do you feel absolutely has to be removed? Why does it seem like you have the transmission supported by a blue lift? I have Bentley manuals on the way. Most of my BMW experience is my E39 528i. Brand new to the M62. Looks like your videos will be saving me from many errors along the way. Thank you
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 2 года назад
Hi and thanks for your comment. In a few words you will need to drop the subframe and support the engine with an engine support beam from the top in order to gain access to remove the upper sump. The blue transmission jack was there to support the gearbox in case of an accidental drop as the beam I have was a bit shorter and I wanted to make sure I don't get hurt if something went wrong. Congrats on your purchase. I have more videos coming but need to find time to process them🤝

@@TheKeenMechanic can I use an engine support beam and jack up the engine into place then just lower the engine from the support beam? And out of curiosity, it seemed like you had the subframe in but the sway bar was loose. Am I seeing that correctly? Lastly, I don’t see where you have a oil pump removal video. I saw the install, but not the removal. I can’t assume it’s just the opposite. Thanks again n
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 2 года назад
@First Last Hi I had removed a lot of components due to doing a full restoration on the front axle and enging so you may not need to remove all bits. Yes, use an engine support beam and drop the subframe to gain enough access to the upper sump. You may also need to remove the steering assembly as well. It will be much easier to work on the installation if you completely remove the subframe but you can do whatever is best for you. I have a video on the removal as well, check this out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--F_b2sOD0wQ.html

@@TheKeenMechanic awesome. I must have overlooked this video as I was specifically looking for the oil sump removal.I hate getting under these massive cars. It must be a joy to be one of those guys with a car lift at your house. Thank you for the assistance.
@TheKeenMechanic

@@paperandmedals8316 I hate it too buddy. I always had to tripple check and make sure I had axle stands, jacks and even wheels with tyres under just in case of an accident. So lucky I could finally afford a lift now. Bough one about a month ago. So useful I have had about 10 cars on it in the past month as I am doing some work for friends and getting some money that will hopefully pay for the lift at some point

Hey! I am about to drop my upper oil pan on my 540i in order to change the gasket. Is it absolutely nessesary to raise the engine a couple of cm? And if so, can you explain why? Also the oil pump needs to be removed?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 8 месяцев назад
Hi, yes, you need every bit of space you can gain as you will see how tight it is. Ideally drop the whole subframe with suspension if you have a lift. Best of luck buddy🤝
@panzerhanzen
@panzerhanzen 8 месяцев назад
I can see that it is not the stabiliser/Sway bar that is crashing in the upper oil pan when i try to remove it, it is in fact the next black pipe that goes across from wheel to wheel..the one pipe 5-10 cm (from the stabiliser) towards the front of the car. Do you have some video about this also? 😅😅

This will work only if the oil pump is removed?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 3 года назад
It certainly makes it easy to remove it when pump is not in place but if you drop the subframe you don't need to remove the oil pump. Hope this makes sense

What's the upper oil sump bolt torque specs?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic 2 года назад
Check this website for all settings www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/bolts/Metric-Recommended-Torque.aspx I tend to go with 10nm for M6 8.8 graded bolts and 15nm for 10.9 Hope this helps. Sometimes is best to use common sense and do by feel🤝
