On the XI model, it's possible to access the ATF fill hole without removing the transfer box bracket (just remove the exhaust hangers from the transfer case). However, the bracket must be removed in order to replace the mechatronic sealing sleeve. The transfer case support bracket is such a pain to remove because, in order to do that, the exhaust must be first disconnected and let dangling (fighting the rusted nuts!), then the aluminum heat shield must be removed, only to expose the long bolt/nut that holds the bracket to the transmission rubber mount. So when you drain-refill ATF, you might as well replace the mechatronic sealing sleeve and replace transfer case oil at the same time because the transfer case fill hole is also blocked by the same transfer case support bracket.

Great Comment! Thank you! There's almost NOTHING on X drive Trans fluid or Mechatronics work. It's Not a plastic pan like all of the others which is frustrating when you need to do any work on it.

I really appreciate this because I could not for the life of me figure out where the fill plug is. There is a plug on the left side rear of the transmission adjacent to the front drive shaft connection the xfer case, so I thought the drive shaft needed to come off, and I think some people have been using this for the fill plug. The Bently manual does say the fill plug for the ZF is on the right, but has no picture as their procedure is for the GM trans. So thanks, I may return my drive shaft bolts now. Having to remove abd replace the drive shaft bolts each successive fill (in a multi drain-fill replacement) would be a hassle and expensive as they are one time use bolts. The only thing not clear from your video is if you must remove the xfer case bracket. You discussed putting it back on but not taking it off in the first place. Thank you!

But wait, then I watched this one a few minutes later where it is back on the left side above the drain hole!!!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2g-5uY_P7uA.html WTF? Mine is a ZF 6HP19 07 335xi. Going out there now to just drain and refill whatever comes out so will report back. ZF has line drawings of the different trans but could not tell where the freakin drain hole was. I think they basically don't want laypeople working on their boxes. Either way, really appreciate the video.

So on my vehicle the fill is in fact on the driver side above the drain, removal of the drive shaft necessary unless you are really into contorsionism. I just did a drain / refill and will drop the pan in a week or so and do the rest. Immediate improvement with only 4+ liters. Must replace the drive shaft one time use bolts 15ft-lb plus 90 degrees. 135k miles.

To the crew at FCP Euro, have you encountered any complaints from customers with E90 ZF transmissions regarding jerking/jolting in these cars from the transmission? I’ve read this issue can be due to bad solenoids, sealing sleeves, etc. Thank you in advance!

Hello Adan, we haven't heard of many issues in regards to jerking or jolting of the ZF 6-Speed trans. They're are some issues with bad solenoids or sealing sleeves with high mileage vehicles. We recommend a transmission drain and fill service for transmission longevity and to smooth out the shifts. The ZF trans is a well made unit and doesn't have many issues.

@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
It can't hurt. As long as you follow the drain and fill procedure and perform the final fill in the operating temperature range there is no downside to doing the service. The reason for the drain and fill and not flushing the entire system with a machine is the machine can remove all wear material from the transmission which will cause the transmission to start slipping. Automatic transmission use wet clutches to engage and disengage gears. The wear material in the fluid and in the clutches helps engage these clutch packs.

Hey guys: for the zf 6HP19X transmission on an drive BMW, there is also what looks like a fill plug on the left hand side, near the rear of the transmission but behind the front axle that comes off of the transfer case. Is this in fact a fill plug also, or is it something else? Because it seems easier to remove the for E12 bolts holding that small axle to the transfer case and moving it out of the way - then that other fill plug can be accessed easily with a normal allen key socket. What do you think?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
The plug you're referring to is not a fill plug and is slightly higher on the transmission housing than the actual fill plug on the right side under the mechatronic sealing sleeve. The issue with using the plug in question over the actual fill plug is you run the risk of overfilling the transmission due to the fact that it's slightly higher. The worst thing you can do with an automatic transmission is to get the fill level incorrect. We only recommend filling and checking the fluid level in the service via the actual fill plug.

If it's just a basic drain and fill you'll be fine and that would still be recommended. I would avoid flushing fluid out of the torque converter as that could cause clogging of the valve body.

@jayy0321
@jayy0321 6 лет назад
Hey won't the new fluid act as a detergent and loosen up the particles that was in the transmission and cause it to slip ? I heard that this can happen. Not sure if i should go through with the drain and fill procedure. Also for a high Km car, What do you think ?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 6 лет назад
Hello Jameer, a basic drain and fill shouldn't cause an issue. You'll want to avoid having the torque converter flushed out because that could loosen up particles and clog channels within the valve body. We recommend basic drain and fills at 50-60k intervals.
@5speed735i
@5speed735i Год назад
I realize I'm replying 5 years later, but for others wondering about this, the answer is no. Changing transmission fluid is always a good thing. If there were any "particles" the detergents would "loosen up" they would be captured by the transmission filter. Think of the logic behind that superstition, is dirty fluid what's holding your transmission together? I think that rumor was started by people whose transmission was beginning to fail, and they changed the fluid, but the tranny still failed. So they blamed the fluid change, which is illogical. It's a superstition as false as the one about batteries on a cement floor will somehow be "shorted" and lose voltage.

It seems this is not actually a flush, this is just drain and refill? This does not look anything like the flush procedure I recently had on my 335i, where they used about 16 liters of oil to completely flush out all the old and nasty oil from the transmission. My e92 335i now shifts as smoothly as when it was new.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
The safest way to service a 6HP transmission is a drain and fill service. This is as recommended by ZF. We just updated the title as it's not the correct description for the procedure. You can do multiple drain and fill procedures to clean all the old fluid out but it's not entirely necessary or recommended as wear material in the fluid is needed to allow for proper engagement of the clutches inside the transmission (wet clutches). It is not advised to use a flush machine seen at transmission shops on one of these transmission.
@zemekiel
@zemekiel 7 лет назад
This was done at a BMW dealer in Germany. It shifts nicely when doing high speed blasts on the Autobahn, and that is with an ESS stage 2 ECU tune, pushing 150nm more than normal (550nm rather than 400nm). No hint of slippage or other problems. Before the flush it shifted hard and made some clunking noises, especially in normal Drive mode. From my perspective, the flush they did made the transmission feel like new (they also changed mech sealing sleeve and solenoids).
@seanhua8369
@seanhua8369 7 лет назад
I do believe that it was the new solenoids that made the whole difference. Did they just replace the solenoids or they actually re-built the valve body?

Sourabh Sharma they charged me 179 to do the diagnosis. I am going to fix it at a shop near me since it's way cheaper. If that doesn't solve it, I am going to ask BMW to do another diagnostic.

didnt bmw said the transmission fluid was lifetime?
@fcpeuro

Lifetime fill as described by BMW is 100K miles which is good enough for the extended warranty time frame. Many vehicles will go past 100K miles before they are scrapped to the salvage yard. Additionally, ZF has a prescribed service interval of the 6HP transmissions (the transmission in many BMW's between 2006-20102) of 8 years or 50K miles. This is a much more realistic service interval vs the non interval provided by BMW.

why are you replacing the oil pan ?

The oil pan has an integrated filter. It's recommended to change the pan whenever you perform a fluid change.

Hi FCP Euro, I gave a call to ZF this afternoon, they told me the fill/ over flow plug is located at the left side close to transfer case. Also, please take a look at the video from ZF below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZRrgmfM8VlQ.html To me, I think it's pretty clear you were filling the fluid from a plug not be designated for this purpose. Further, did you guy perform this procedure on a xDrive model, and do I have to remove the front drive shaft on the left side of transmission? Thanks!

This video is filmed on an xDrive vehicle. The ZF video on the other hand depicts the fill procedure for a 6HP rear wheel drive transmission, not a 6HPX transmission designed for an all wheel drive vehicle with a transfer case. On a BMW xDrive vehicle there is a drive shaft located on the left side of the transmission tunnel which runs from the output flange on the front of the transfer case to the front of differential. While there is a plug on the side of the transmission there is absolutely no way to access it without removing the drive shaft which is not necessary. There is a second plug located near the back of the transmission (which is easily accessible) and is intended to be used specifically for checking the fluid fill/level of the transmission. The procedure for a drain and fill operation is written this way for xDrive equipped vehicles and this information is reflected as such in the official BMW TIS repair manual which you can see via the link below: www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-325xi-lim/repair-manuals/24-automatic-transmission/24-00-automatic-transmission/PFL7eb8 The maintenance routine for xDrive vehicles in this case was performed 100% as required by both BMW and ZF. For a rear wheel drive vehicle would be performed as ZF does in their video. To this date we have performed this procedure as written by BMW on numerous xDrive vehicles. The fill going in always matches the quantity that has been removed.

Refill at 30-40 degrees, not 30-50 degrees! Do not to over tighten the bolts on valvebody, you needs a TORQUE WRENCH.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
Daniel, per ZF the final fill must be made between 30 and 35 degress C. If you wait to long and the transmission is over 50 you must wait until the temperature cools back down which is why 50 degress C is mentioned. The purpose of checking Mechatronic bolts is to make sure they have not loosened up which is known to happen. They are not being torqued in this procedure at all. With a quarter inch ratchet with light pressure you can easily tell if a bolt is tight or has loosened up. It's an extra step to ensure the seal between the valve body and sealing sleeves is tight. A loose valve body can cause poor shifting as pressure from the valve body is not reaching the clutch packs.
