Welcome back! The 3rd generation B58, the B58TU2 is here! Unlike the 1st generation B58 and 2nd gen B58TU1 there is very limited detailed information about the B58TU2. This is where I come in, I have made this video to dig deeper and have a closer look at the B58TU2, BMW designation B58B30M2. Although the B58TU1 comes in two variants (the B58B30B aka B58B30O1 and the B58B30C aka B58B30M1), I will be comparing the B58B30M2 to the less powerful B58B30M1. This is only Part 1, with plenty of material for a second part. If there is demand for Part 2 I will certainly make it! Love all the comparisons. I was hoping i would be able easily swap out the direct injection on my tu1 to the tu2 but that looks like it's not going to be a easy as i hoped. I'm a little surprised they didn't go dual injection.

Thank you! I was about to get a 2024 330e but I see TU2 is coming to the 2025 MY. Having port injection added is more than enough for me to wait, don't want to deal with carbon cleaning.

I got all excited and went to check on the 2023 M240i to see if I had the TU2 with port injection, but of course that wasn't the case. Oh well, can't have it all. Thanks for the excellent video.

Great video and looking for ward to Part II. Def helps me navigate my '23 m340i which (I think) is the B58B30 (D?) with the mild-hyb. I've tuned M44 and M10 engines so this one is WILD!

I honestly don't know (there are always rumours) but I believe with current trends they might divert their efforts to a more performance oriented hybrid drivetrain (using a version of B58B30M2) rather than make a B58B30O2. But I am just guessing.

This! I keep reading so much different things about the N55 engines, between the PWG N55s in the E9X chassis, the EWG N55s in the F30 335i which are supposedly different from the N55s in the M235i (forged crank etc?). And then theres the M2 N55 with a supposed closed deck block which has a complete cloud of mystery around it. I'd love to see all the different N55 models cleared up.

@pranavk8293 Search for Simply Car Things N55 engine variants. He did a pretty good breakdown video of the differences on the variants of the N55. Also with your comment you are mostly spot on except there were a few F chassis cars that came with the PWG still 2012, 2013 & 2014 models. Also I am pretty certain the M2 still had a open deck. But the N55 in the M2 was definitely peak N55 and the most durable one of them all.

Hi there, the compression ratio for the two B58TU1 variants is different: The B58B30M1 is 11.0:1 whereas the compression ratio of the B58B30O1 is 10.2:1. In this video I was only comparing the B58B30M1 to the B58B30M2.

This b58tu2 engine goes into the the 40i models. Im pretty sure the m40i models, or soon the m50i models will have even different components.

Yes, the B58TU2 is expected to feature in various upcoming refreshed / LCI BMW models.

Are all tu2 2 port exhaust heads? Early b58 are all 6 port and b58s found in the later cars can be either 2 or 6 port depending on the model they are found in.

I just purchased a low kl 2020 BMW 540 which has the B58B30M1 engine. In your opinion is this a superior engine to the original as I plan on doing some modest modifications (downpipe / tune / intake). I am a bit concerned that BMW hasn't used the B58B30M1 in many performance cars and quickly went to the TU2 which has more horsepower. I suppose the supra used the B58B30M1 for longer which is perhaps a good sign? Thanks

Personally I feel the 1st gen is the best B58 engine, but the B58B30M1 is a very good platform for modest modifications.

Doubt it. BMW wouldn’t update it to handle more power. If you want a inline 6 that’s over engineered, go with the n54 This is a better engine overall but n54 can handle more power. Well I guess we will see

@@johnnychimpo7539 The B58 has a closed-deck block. By this nature alone, B58 is significantly more over-engineered structurally than the open-deck N54 and can handle more power in stock form. N54 is a great engine too, and N54-engined cars are very affordable now and making them very popular for mods and projects and have more aftermarket support, hence you see more high power builds with N54. But I am simply pointing out your statement of referring to a N54 being more over-engineered and can handle more power versus the B58 is not correct when they are in stock form.

I have the 2019 440i Gran Coupe 1st Gen B58 with MPPSK from factory....thinking of upgrading to TU HPFFP. Can i have your thoughts/opinion about this if this is a safe mod?

Hi, the B58TU HPFP has been installed by a very large number of 1st gen B58 owners with generally no issues reported. It is a safe mod, especially considering the mod is combined with a more aggressive tune. However, in your case I don't know if you plan to replace the MPPSK, which comprises of BMW's 360hp tune as well as upgraded exhaust, as otherwise you would see little benefit from the B58TU fuel pump. You would need a high flow downpipe as well as the B58TU fuel pump in order to install a stage 2+ or stage 2.5 tune.

@7:17 the block on left noted as “B58TU1” is the original B58 as the timing chain shown to have the bulge of the intermediate drive sprocket.

Actually, you are correct, RealOEM / the Illustrated parts catalogue for the B58TU continues to show the 1st gen B58 illustration under the short engine section. I thought it would be OK considering the points I was making. But you are certainly very observant.

still a 2 port? guess i don't feel as bad with my TUsupra. I wonder if i we can clone and see if the DME was compatible with the TU for port injection without using a external controller.

Hehehe, the B58TU2 DME will only work with very specific hardware, but hey who knows, it might work!

B58B30O1 (technical manual) = B58B30B (engraved on engine) = B58D (IPC e.g RealOEM) So B58D means the second generation B58 (aka B58TU1) with 382hp (i.e. 6-port version).

on the mild hybrid assist which replaces the alternator, we know it is a 48 volt system, but what kind of amps or total wattage do they get into and out of that thing? Dealers seem clueless.

Yes, dealers are not very technically minded, I agree. I don't know much about the 48V system, but I do know the batteries (1st gen) are 10Ah 440Wh 44V (if it helps).

I read the 48V alternator can output up to 250A for short durations, on the mild hybrid tu1 engines. there is a separate power control module to convert 48v to 12v

@@780brando great info. So, is the drive motor part then doing 250 x 48 = 12,000 watts = 16 hp? Presumably, it dumps power into the house battery on regen, making it avail for launch assist and acceleration later? How long do these 12v house batts last now?

@@gendaminoru3195 Yes the alternator is aka "starter motor/generator" on the models with mild hybrid. the SMG charges the 48V lithium battery directly. when coasting (depends on drive mode) there is slight regen, regen then increases with braking. there is a display in the gauges showing regen, but not assist. Not sure on the life of the 48V lithium battery

@@780brando Yes on the test drive I saw that display, but was wondering if there's an indication of assist - maybe a code or programmable dash or some secondary readout like we used on the old E31's pixel display. Anyway I will figure it all out next month after delivery. What's the word on ECU/EML reprogramming by Dinan or others on new cars? Warranty void?

That's a good question, I'm not 100% sure to be honest. It should be a detuned B58B30M2 generating roughly 308hp coupled with Hybrid Synchronous motor generating roughly 190hp.

It will be quite clear if it's a B58TU2 through the intercooler (and you can check the area between the engine block and intercooler for the new injectors). Hi there, in terms of tuning and mods, we are back to square 1 with the B58TU2. The various aftermarket parts companies will have to develop brand new hardware upgrades, but to take advantage of those, tuning is required. The issue is that the DME is a new standard and is back to being locked. So for customisation and tuning, there's no real options for the B58TU2 until the ECU can be unlocked. Tuning boxes are being developed (e.g. from JB4) but that is about the only option for some time. Testing has shown great potential for the stock hardware (so tuning boxes alone, and later on stage 1 tuning, can accomplish what previously required upgrading hardware). As the stock hardware seems to have alot more potential than 374hp, we might expect to see higher engine outputs of the B58TU2 in a package like MPPSK. For the time being the B58TU1 can be readily upgraded but the B58TU2 can't.

@@the404man Hi, the 2023 M340i does not have the B58TU2, the current M340i does not have the B58TU2, but the B58TU2 may feature in the M340i later on possibly during a further refresh (e.g. LCI-2) of the G20.
